Hi Guys,
I'm looking at fitting a reverse camera to the Puma and I have been looking at ideas for where to fit it. I haven't bought a camera yet, and was just wondering what others have done. Did you go for the "truck" style, "Bullet" style or "numberplate' style?
Pictures would be appreciated.

I have mounted my camera (bullet type I think) under the centre stop light on the rear door.
The down side is the spare wheel blocks the lower view a little bit, but the up side is having the camera on the inside it doesn't get dirty or muddy. If the window is dirty, I can just use the rear washer/wiper & I'm back in bussiness.:ehigh5:

I bit the bullet and 'hard mounted' the camera above the rear window washer.

The screen is a 7" touch screen which doubles as a GPS screen (connected to a laptop mounted on the cargo barrier running OziExplorer)

I have a TFT screen which I was hoping to mount to a camera but that with the GPS I'll need to mount a forward camera so that I can see out of the front as well

We've mounted ours just above the tow bar. It is great for reversing, see if you have "just" enough room to merge, of course looking out for kiddies. And is absolutly brilliant for coupling trailers. People watch you reverse up to the trailer and place the ball right under the hitch and stare in awe :D

I like the sound of your. A few questions...
What brand did you buy? Did you install yourself or the supplier? Where is the monitor?

I fitted one to the 110 this weekend. Tried one of those wireless ones and they were crap. Well for a 110 they were.
Bought a kit from Ebay for $100. And fitted it on saturday and it is great . Have a round camera which is the same sort as Dullbirds one. So it has infa red. The chap on Ebay does loads of differant types of screens. I went for a 3.5" screen. But can get the ones where the screen is in the rear view mirror
Here is the chaps store on Ebay

Pardon my ignorance but if the laptop runs the software and the touchscreen is a monitor/GPS display then where is the bit that reads the satellites:confused:

Guys thanks for the pics, its given me some ideas,
DB, how do you go with the "off center" position? can you judge your position when reversing so you don't hit stuff?

I run a GPS mouse (an older version of this one (http://www.exploroz.com/Shop/GPS/GlobalSat/Globalsat_BU-353_Mouse_GPS.aspx)). It's a GPS receiver that spits NMEA-0184 strings to the USB port which Ozi then reads in. It has a magnetic base that sticks to the roof rack.

It also was a touch screen with Discover Aus run thru a laptop. Unfortunately the on off button on the screen died & it became one of those "must fix it" jobs.

Ours is Alpine camera coupled with a Alpine D100 head unit. It is 1 unit high so it is a straight swap for the oem stereo. The screen is 7" and is a multi function display. Radio, CD/DVD, GPS, iPod and of course the reversing camera. It also has the neat feature that no matter what you have selected on the screen, when you put the car in reverse it overrides the screen and put the source to camera. Very compact do all set up.

thiink they all do that...ours does as well.
BUT ours is not branded :) oh and you can rotate ours too so when it goes into reverse. you can set it up so, when you select reverse, not only does the reversing camera come on if you haven't got the screen out it comes out and then rotates around to the driver...for better viewing

Thanks Dullbird....any chance of a pic when you get the chance?
Where did you purchase from and who did the install?

With the camera outside the vehicle does the camera require cleaning after dusty roads?
Its not uncommon to have a thick layer of dust over everything behind the vehicle, particularly toward the end of the dry.

purchased it from a guy from ebay about 2 years ago....he was starting up as an importer for them....it was nothing flashy looking on the outside....although does have a removable face.
but it was $500 less than half of any other flip up on the market at the time so I was willing to take the risk. there is a pic of it further up.
been really happy with it and it survived all the corrugations of the bullman track..hence why I never brought an expensive model.
it has recently stopped working properly though.....everything works fin except the screen sometimes now doesn't retract...we are guessing that some dust from our trip has gotten in there....and we just haven't gotten around to having a look at it

Afraid it's a bit of a grave dig but rather than start a new thread,
I'm about to take delivery of a new 110 Crew-Cab and was thinking that rather than peer through the canopy or sitck my head out the window that a reversing camera might suit - then I thought that this may also help replace the RV mirror for on road driving and that with the relatively low cost of a second camera that a camera for reversing and a camera for driving would be useful.
Any ideas on leaglity and switching options - using the inbuilt switch (which I assume works off the reversing light feed) to switch between cameras would be ideal, this would require hooking into 12v that was always on when the ignition was on, somewhere in the vicinity of the camera or monitor.
Cheers

Ask the vendor for a wirong diagram. The last one I got was in Chinese. Asked for and received an English one within the hr
And yes, separate power required for the monitor.

I'd recon that 4 plugs into 1 and this powers the monitor, the spare white on 1 would be for a 2nd camera. Spare Reds 2 and 3 go to 12 V.

I’ve jumped on this thread and will admit I haven’t read through the posts. But, if it’s any use to anyone I have a reverse camera that sits to the left of centre and I have it mounted under a LED reverse light. (I couldn’t mount it centre because of swing away wheel carrier.) Although, the angle makes it a little bit inaccurate, it servs the main purpose of showing what is behind me and works in the dark thanks to the big LED light. I set it up because I couldn’t think of anything worse than hitting my little fella or someone else’s. The thing is great, I always check it before reversing. Works well in the bush too and to get around the parallax error of the angle, I have used a whiteboard marker (teacher in me) to mark the display on the screen in the vehicle where the true corners of the car are and reversing lines are. Works a treat. Cheap and effective. Hope this helps someone. -Regards Landy Red.

I’ve got 2 cameras already fitted to my 110. (1 up high above the washer and the other near the number plate.) I’d like to mod the wiring in a couple of ways:
1) So I can turn on the cameras with a switch so I can monitor my trailer while I’m driving.
2)Add a switch so I can turn on the reverse light straight off the battery to use as a camping light.
Any clues where I’d find the existing wiring from the reverse switch to make these mods? Thanks in advance!!

Hi,
1) So I can turn on the cameras with a switch so I can monitor my trailer while I’m driving.
I took a wire from the battery, via a relay, to a fuse box that I mounted under the cubby. (I had to lift it a few inches with some pine battens.)
The relay turns on by a SPDT switch by choosing either an ignition wire or one from the spare battery.
This gives me power to this fuse box while the ignition is on, or the spare battery has power, as I choose.
The cameras/monitor are powered from this fuse box and I use the camera as a rearview mirror to see behind the slide on camper.
2)Add a switch so I can turn on the reverse light straight off the battery to use as a camping light.
It is not legal to be able to select this from the driver's seat.
(Though it can be done with the engine running, by putting the transfer box in neutral and the main gearbox in reverse.)
You could have a SPDT switch in the back that fed from either the existing wire (as per normal) or in the other position, from a wire from the battery.
Though with LEDs so cheap to buy and run, I would wonder why you would restrict your lighting to the reverse lights on a Defender.
Cheers

Thanks for the info, anyone have any ideas where physically I’d locate the wire that they’d have tapped for the camera from the reverse switch?
I would grab it straight off the switch but it’s tricky to get to to run wires as far as I can see...
(Austastar the reverse light idea is only as a bit of supplemental light if it’s easy to do, hence why I’m not thinking of adding a specific LED. You made a good point though :) )

Hi, I came off the reverse lights that I fitted to my tray, ran the wire in a length of garden watering 13mm poly hose up inside the LH chassis rail, out near the battery box and in to the cab via an existing gromit.
Yep, long way, but the current is negligible.
Cheers
