Hi all,
My name is Mick and I am looking at purchasing my 1st Range Rover, a '98 4.0. It's on the southside of Brissy (Springwood) and I've put a deposit on it subject to mechanical inspection. I want to take it to someone who knows these cars rather than a general RACQ inspection. Can you please recommend someone?
Many thanks,
Mick.

Here's some tips.......... ( I could think of plenty more)
EAS
Take it for a test drive last thing in the afternoon. Before you start, drop it to access level. When you pull off see how long it takes to raise up to normal ride height. When you've finished make sure it is set at the normal ride height.
Drive past first thing the next morning and see if it looks level and about the same height.
If the EAS is playing up, it always does something weird overnight. A bag leak can make it go down, or a valve block leak can make it go up.
Tip two....
Make sure the remote key fob is in good working order (and preferably that there are 2 ). If not, do not accept the excuse ..... oh the battery is probably flat (that will be the most expensive battery you ever buy)
Tip three ....
Brakes
when you start up the car listen for how long the ABS pump runs before it stops (this is a high pitched buzzing/whirring sound). Whilst driving, monitor the ABS pump to see how frequently and for how long it runs.
Tip four...
Hevac
Check all functions of the Hevac (Heating/Ventialtion/Aircon).as you change function listen closely under the dash for any unusual clicking sounds - (this could mean sticky or broken blend motors). Make sure the cheque book symbol is not displayed in the bottom corner of the main display. Alos look for any evidence of a coolant spill in either footwell.
Tip five ...
Check for any water pooling in the spare wheel well under the floor in the back.
I'm sure it won't have any of these issues.
Good luck
Dave

Thanks guys. I called Ricks but they arfe fully booked for about 2 weeks. A good sign I guess, and their quote for the inspection was over $100 less than everywhere else. I will definately try them if all works out and the sale goes ahead.
Dave, that's excellent advice. I will check all those things. One of the reasons I'm pretty keen on this Rangie is that it has an inch thick pile of receipts for work with it, with a lot of the big ticket items having been replaced in the last 12 months. New blend motors, air suspension, air compressor, a/c compressor, and LPG system. Also regular servicing has been spot on, so I'm hoping it all checks out. Actually, I haven't been this excited about a new car for many years!
As far as pre-purchase inspection goes I'm taking it to Austral Landrover in the Valley. They had a free slot for Wednesday morning and the pricing was surprisingly good for a full diagnostic check. About $100 less than the generic RACQ inspection.
Cheers,
Mick,

Dave, out of interest, what is that water pooling issue in the tyre well caused by?
Thanks,
Mick

Usually a bad seal around the tailgate door.
Easy to fix but if its gone untreated it can be a bit messy, rusty etc down there.
Sounds like a good example, shame its not an HSE.

He certainly is,could be called Rovercare.Give him a ring & see how you go.Do a search on here you may find some more info.
He does work on other cars as well,he used to do a bit for the defence forces on their defenders etc,but that was a good few yrs ago now.

I've used Paul and he's been pretty straight and appears to have done good work.

Mick,
Mick - I appreciate that you need to get the inspection done ASAP and it might be hard to get mechanics onto it straight away, but seriously - I wouldn't take a sick dog to Austral if I could avoid it.
I'd be exhausting all other options (like this Paul bloke) first.
