Hi guys,

I want to change the coolant in my FL1 L series diesel, but I'm not
sure exactly where to drain it.
Which pipe do I disconnect?

The bottom hose on the radiator (near the intercooler air pipe). When refilling remember to slacken off the air bleed plastic screw on the heater pipe back by the firewall until coolant runs out of it - then tighten it back up.

My my - you have learnt a lot about L series in your short time of ownership ;)

Spot on - the only thing I would add is have the heater on, let the coolant run out of the bleed screw until there are no air bubbles and after running the car for a day or so (and it is cool) just crack the bleed screw again to bleed off any air that may have been trapped elsewhere in the engine first time around.

Well that made me laugh :D I bought Flandy to learn about diesels as they've been a mystery to me for a long time, but it sure has been a sharp learning curve with all the problems my one had.

Thanks guys,

umm... that is the large (approx 50mm) bottom radiator hose, I assume there are no others?
The Freelander isn't here so I can't run out and check.

Correct - just pull off the hose at the bottom of the radiator.

That would have been the intercooler pipe I disconnected then, DOH.
Bit of a surprise when nothing came out.

Couldn't they make it easier to drain, by putting a tap down there
like they (still?) have on japanese cars?

Hehehe - note we said radiator hose not intercooler hose.

Must be a bloody old jap car that had drain taps - I don't think too many have them these days. But then to remove the hose is a two minute job.:)
