Victorian registration in NSW

Hi all,

I just moved back to NSW from VIC, now I know the RTA says I have to register the car in NSW but I still have close to 12 months of my VIC registration and the cost in NSW is much higher.

Is there any disadvantage with with keeping the car registered in VIC?
Is this something I should consider more seriously, I've heard of people in Merimbula NSW have cars registered in VIC though they live in NSW.

If you don't register the car in it's "home" state after the grace period (3 months?), then you face possible fines. You could also find that you are effectively unregistered for insurance purposes.

Don't quote me but I'm pretty sure you can claim the unused portion of the Vic rego back when you swap over, once you hand the plates in i think..

Interstate vehicles (http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/getnewrego/interstatevehicles.html) is the appropriate RTA NSW website to have a look at.

I know the grace period for transferring a license is 3 months (which is free of charge, they issue you a NSW license that expires same date as your previous from interstate) but am not sure for vehicle registration changeover.

If you can't find it on their website, I would suggest calling them and finding out exactly what you have to do, its better to so the legally required stuff and cop the RTA's exorbitant fees and charges than to have something happen later on and have to pay fines or have insurance issues.

If you do have to change over immediately, you may also be eligible for partial refund from the previous registration from interstate as it will have been cancelled.

You can't just switch the rego. You will have to go through the full inspection pain and get NSW rego. You surrender the plates at the NSW RTA when you register the car and they will give you a receipt for the Vic RTA. Then you can get a refund on the remaining Vic rego.

You can get fined for it but I don't know about the insurance side of the fence.

Vic Roads will give you a PRO RATA refund of your registration.
Don't expect too much back as the rego fee is only the small part of the total cost, it's the compulsary third party insurance that they still take a fair whack out and hand you back pro rata. (I've been down that path )
Yes NSW is dearer and you have to get a RWC every year to renew your rego.

I am sure this has changed due to objections by other state authorities. Victoria used to be quite happy to accept registration payments for vehicles using an interstate address. Their rationale was that many vehicles owned by Victorians (particularly businesses) are used and garaged in other states.

Queensland used to require that registration and driver's licences be changed within two weeks of taking up principal residence in Queensland.

I once worked for a heavy equipment company that had a rep. based in the Northern Rivers with a company car registered in Qld. at the corporate address. He was lined up one day by the local wallopers and told that the car should be registered in NSW and he could be fined every time they saw the vehicle if not. The Company Secretary would not have this and in due course our rep. got a fine and put it on his expenses which I approved for payment. This did get the manure into the ventilation system. The Company Sec. 'phoned the registry in Grafton and had the relevant NSW regulations explained to him and had to back down. Car got registered in NSW.

I still wonder what the rep. did to get his local coppers offside. The company cars had been registered and used this way since about 1950 without complaint.

Check with the RTA, Ron. You may find 'phoning them wastes most of a day being shuffled around from one seat warmer to another but if the vehicle is garaged in NSW it is required to be registered in NSW. Full stop, no argument, fines applicable.

Well I have contacted the RTA and I need a blue and green slip for an unregistered vehicle (no rego on green slip), the blue slip is a required inspection for unregistered vehicles and there may need to be a further inspection depending on the what's in the blue slip and how they feel on the day because the car is 6 years old. Basically they treat my car as if its unregistered...which technically it is in NSW...it all amounts to costs and more costs and inconvinience if I need another inspection above the blue slip because then I need to take it to an RTA inspection place!

I must say when I moved to VIC and changed the rego from NSW to VIC it was a lot easier and cheaper!

I know when Redback purchased his Disco in Victoria and brought it back to NSW he had some dramas with the change over to NSW Rego .
Maybe he could tell you what the problems were .
