I know that this is an oft discussed topic.
I have a S111 isuzu ute that mostly does farm duty (3rd low range is the norm)
It has 7.50 tyres with a tread that is more road than mud and they get a bit clogged in our Tassie mud!
I am after some tyres that are more mud than road (it is regd and does occas short trips on the road so need so be safe and legal). I do not want super big ones (no power steering) and do not want a massive expense.
Suggestions please.

If you are looking for a size that same as you 7.50R16s either go that same size or a 235/85R16 is the equivalent - lots of options there, most major brands do a tyre in that size.

can't reccomend any one in particular, i'd say go on the cheap side though as mileage won't be an issue if most of your work is on the dirt

happy hunting - eBay is your friend

Another tasmanian!!!

I have a sime konvoy on my series 3 in the standard 750x16 and they are very good. I can't remember who the supplier was though ,as I got them from my brother who got them locally. st lennoards tyres maybe? I know they do gt radial that make a similar xgrip in the same size.

pic of my konvoys here.
sorta see them in this pic

I'm not 100% sure if they still make them, but they are cheap, less than $150 a tyre when I looked at them.

When I get the money I'll be looking at getting new tyres

And I may be getting rid of these. They are on about 60% at the moment and the spare has never been used

I'm in Tassie as well, how long can you wait?

ask the REMLR lads where they get there second hand ex millitary tyres. I here the ones that aren't suitable for highway use are real cheap and would be alright for farm duties.

the ex mil tyres being sold in most parts of the country have not been availabel in tasmania, and by the time you get them to tassie they are an expensive choice.

I had retread road grippers on my series 3 before these, and they were dereadfull in comparison. ride, handling, road grip, everything.

well there's your problem hahahaha I have some SP Road Grippers in 750R16 on my truck and they go alright even though they are quite old and dry. Would get 4 new ones if I could afford the price of new ones

Still haven't decided if I want to go wide tyres or stick with the skinnies. 235/85R16 will fit on a 6.5" IIA rim but will the 255/85R16 fit also? I am in a similar situtation in neding new mud tyres (only a weekend rig)

What about something like this?

4WDbits SAT Style Deestone D503 750-16 10 Ply (http://4wdbits.co.nz/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=188)

Or if it is only going to be used off-road, those rice-paddy tyres?

those SAT's are a copy of the goodyear Custom Xtra Grip Hi-Miler.

Goodyear still make them, but many copies are available. Tyres4u is a good page for finding some of the more obscure brands. (There is a tyres4u dealer in launceston). It also looks like the sime konvoys are no longer made.
Tyres 4U (http://www.tyres4u.com.au/t4utyreselector/4wd_Fitment-750-16_CatID-1_list.aspx)

Journey brand
Tyres 4U - 4WD/Light Commercial (http://www.tyres4u.com.au/t4utyreselector/4wd_Fitment_ID-24458_popup.aspx)

GT radial, I would go with these nowadays.

Small tractor tyres would probably be the best and cheapest option - assuming you can pick some up 2nd hand...

Apart from that, Silverstone MT117 (original) are the cheapest new mud tyres I am aware of. Only available in 280/85-16 (9.00x16), not DOT rated - but they work VERY well in mud.

I have found a local bloke who sells "otani jeep service" to the mine blokes. They are about $175. How do they go?

Will the landy object to having something with "jeep" on them fitted? (jeep is a four letter word!) :)

Have Bridgestone Jeep Service on mine. Don't know if they are the same thing rebranded. Might be they are made in the same factory???

Great in the mud, OK in the sand, not so good on wet grass/clay/rocks. Nice if you like to hum along with them on the highway ;)

Wear has been good and they're tough as old boots.

Very nice tyres Richard, like the width too. I hadn't even heard of them. I'll be making some enquiries about these ... :)

as per pheonix's post I have the xtra grip hi milers on fozzy.

they did a great job on my wagga trip and I was putting some modern 4x4's with lesser rubber to shame on some greasy stuff on the way back.

photos from the week to upload shortly.....

I'll edit them into this post.

edit -----

a new super grip with about 3000km on the road on it.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2015/06/442.jpg
you can just see whats left of the virgin nipples on the outside edge of the tread face

and one with something like 10K Km on it. this ones in the position it was fitted.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2009/06/467.jpg
no rotation yet.

this is the same rubber I used for the sundowner trip, the wagga trip and will be doing the cape on.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2009/06/468.jpg
this pic is from the trip back from wagga, you can see how the plough has hung me up a little lowering of the front tyre pressures an a rock in front of the right hand wheel (which was just not quite touching the ground enough) was enough to get me mobile again.

good tyres if you can stand the noise.

I've bought these tyres over the years for my SIII, now on the Defender. I've always known them as "Custom Xtra Grips". This set is made by Rhoden, but I've bought Olympic, and other branded ones in the past. I think every manufacturer has had their logo on it. They throw mud out well and are pretty cheap (should be under $200ea).

Good climbers too, and 7.50x16.
