Went to K-Mart on the weekend and got a Penn Seaboy 190 10kg to 15kg line class reel and 5' 9" length full glass Rod, it's a boat wharf combo.

Now all I need to do is learn how to tie line and bait properly:eek:

And learn how to cast:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:
I only use my overhead reel to "drop over the side" Nice reels but a pain to cast due to centrifical forces and a slowing cast weight=instant birds nest:mad::mad::mad::mad:.
I suggest you google "how do I cast an overhead reel". For practice load it with cheap as line and hit the local park!!!! Once mastered then but a nice braid on it!!!

I got about a dozen different styles of over head reels, can cast them all to a degree. The best ones to cast normally have a brake of somesort and designed to cast. Still get the odd birdnest and find a birdnest in braid is easier to untangle than mono

There is an excellent tutorial on how to cast them on either a Qld or Vic fishing website.
I thought I saved it to Favorites but cant see it.
Google "how to cast an overhead reel" with an Aussie search, should be one of the first few that come up.
Well worth looking for.

Agree with that Andy
Overhead Reels are great for trolling over the side of the boat .
For casting they are a pain in the butt .
Your first birds nest with this type of reel will not be a happy fishing experience and it doesn't get much better even with lots of practice :)

Over head reels are also great for surf casting, with a 14 foot rod you should average a 100m cast without to much difficulty.(whole pilly and 6 gram sinker)

Sorry Kev but I have to disagree.:(:(
Casting they are a pain in the butt? Casting they are the only way.:D:D
Accuracy is the name of the game and an overhead is the only way to go.:D
Your first bird's nest with this type of reel will not be a happy fishing experience:( Too right and well said - and yes it will happen again - usually as a result of angler inexperience or slack attention to detail - for instance not "loading" the reel correctly with the line, not setting the cast control correctly (yes, on most modern reels there is a dynamic invention known as cast control)
and it doesn't get much better even with practice - well mate, there is this saying: 20 years experience may well be one year's experience tried 20 times.:eek:

Sorry Kev but I have to disagree.:(:(
I've got some good fisho mates that swear by them as well :)
I guess everyone has a different view on the gear that suits them best .
It would be a boring world if everyone thought the same and we all used the same hooks lines and sinkers .
As I always say - Each to his own .
If your happy with what your using and catching fish , then thats what it's really all about :)

i agree with kev,
a penn and barry fishing is NOT a good combo.
that penn and rod combo is better suited for bottom bashing not targeting trevas, barra and jacks up north off the bank.
a good 6' 2piece rod and egg beater would have been a far better choice.
