Yes some pics missing, not very exciting just a stopped rover. Creek was only 450mm deep. Freak occurance where water somehow channeled it-self in to guard and the motor was turned into a water pump. Still waiting to hear back from insurance company in to how f-ed up it really is.

Bit sad that really. But on a brighter note that ford was a part of the road so I would have thought you would be covered. You just may get a new engine out of this - hey presto - no more worries about cracked blocks, liner movement etc and new what ever else got wet. Good luck anyway.

Wha?!? That certainly is a freaky one. I've got a trip coming up to Barrington Tops with about 20 creek crossings - a little cautious now....

Quick and cheap to fix if its just the motor.

Sorry to see another P38A drowned. I have a pretty good idea how you must be feeling... did it myself last year, although the water was a bit deeper.
I wonder if the plastic shroud in the LH wheel arch was cut to fit your bull-bar? Depending on how big the hole/cut is, it might have been enough to direct the water up to the air intake inside the guard... just a theory.
Had you done any other water crossings that day? The odd splash of water to the air-intake shouldn't be a big deal until the level builds up in the air box enough to create a seal... then it's over. I now appreciate why it is a good idea to check the air box after every crossing.
We really need a supplier of snorkels for these things.
If your BeCM didn't get wet, I reckon you'll have a good chance of getting it repaired.
Also depends on your insurance company too I guess. Mine was insured with NRMA. By the time they inspected it, I had ripped the interior out to dry it out so it looked pretty bad inside, and the BeCM and a couple of other ECU's were fried. They did not hesitate to write it off (statuatory, not repairable).
I wish you well in getting the Rangie back on the road again.
Cheers, Paul.

Still waiting to hear from insurance.
Have made plenty of crossings that were proberly to deep (over 800mm) with no problem.
None of the plastic shrowd has been tampered with, maybe because the bullbar sits higher than origonal bumper provides less protection (will check next time).
I had been making plans to fit a new patrol (gu) snorkel, does fit and with a little fiddling around i would have been able to fit pipe work inside guard, so still retaining every part in origonal place. when i get it back or replace will be first item fitted (will post instruction & photos). Hopefully have an answer by monday.

Hi Peacey, No one has built a commercial snorkel yet, as they are one of the hardest cars to do. If you remove a front guard outer skin, you will know why. There is a thick reinforcing rib the whole length of the guard, and completely fills the gap between the wheel and the top of the mudguard, so there is no chance of routing a snorkel behind the outer skin.
However, there is another way, though, and thats to come out of the air box, around the eas box, chuck a right angle, and go under the cruise control pump, and exit through a triangle shaped hole (enlarged) behind the front wheel. If you look in the engine bay below the cruise control vac pump, you will see where it will come out. I am trying to get someone to build a snorkel this week.

Their is plenty of room between the skin and top of wheel well, once a get car back or new car i will build it and post. On the drivers side i have run various cables for winch controls(in dash) dual battery and air line. their is proberly enough room to put a fist in it. have a look when you open the door or remove indicator and have alook.

Was this in the SE suburbs hills and technically a road kept accessible at all times for bush fire escape?? If it is where I think I am around the corner and crossed it many times in a two wheel drive, it is very easy and normally shallow 400mm and I would have thought it was near impossible to get water in your motor.. How unlucky, but at least it gives you an excuse to modify everything!!!!!! :-).
Good luck with the outcome and dont let the insurance co try and leave high and dry (sorry it had to be said)
