View Full Version : Series II LWB camper regeneration

Hi all,
This is not a restoration project, but rather an effort to take a rough old boy and get him back onto the road without spending a fortune.
He's an unusual beast. A Series II, 1967, LWB with a pop-top fabricated from a steel frame and aluminium sheeting. Original 4-cyl motor. Was licensed and used up until about seven years ago, been stored since. Photos below show zero rust (chassis is immaculate too) but rough in most ways. Plenty of smallish oil leaks. Interior has been re-trimmed at some point with the (successful) intention apparently to imitate a sleazy wine bar. Headlights have been moved to the outer guards. A second battery has been added. Wheel-arch flairs have been added, and a running board.
This is my first Landy, having previously usually stuck with Peugeots, but I wanted a four-wheel drive for a bit of shooting and camping. This old boy was only $400. The aim is to get him over the pits and reliable for as little as possible. I might also paint him just to keep the boss happy.
I have a Haynes manual (there was one in the car!) but no experience with these excellent buses, so I am posting here to give you some entertainment and hopefully in return get some free advice. Location is Perth.
Regards,
Lane.

Hi all,
Just set up a project thread here: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/projects-tutorials/81727-series-ii-lwb-camper-regeneration.html#post1001907
Shonky inspired me. But I won't be imitating his efforts. Much lower aims, much less energy, much less money? :)
Cheers for all good advice.

And the first problem - no fuel flow. Motor starts and runs if some fuel is poured in the carby. It's a four-cylinder petrol. Cleaned out the fuel tanks, removed the line from the back of the fuel pump and blew back through it, it was clear. Tried to hand prime the pump and no joy. Have now removed the fuel pump and have it sitting in petrol over-night for disassembly tomorrow. I presume kits are available, so if anybody knows, is this correct and how much should I pay for one? Also, anybody know if they're available in Perth? Any other pointers which would be helpful please?

G'day Lano,
Try Rovacraft in Perth for parts and check out the stickies on the S2 forum.
I see what you mean about the interior - :Rolling:
Just about everything on your car has had a dob of different coloured paint applied; I can only suppose whoever did it was colour blind.
It looks like your machine might be ex-army - have you visited the REMLR forum? Also; if you check out remlr.com you might find your car there in the Army Registration Numbers page. You will need to find the chassis number, which is on the LH rear spring hanger,
Cheers Charlie

It is also ex-military. ;)
Post up your chassis number and we'll tell you what it once was. :D (Chassis number is on the rear left spring hanger - you may have to scrub hard to find it!)
Fuel pumps are available from eBay - around $65 new. Seller is garryclr - send him an email he sells off eBay too.
Put up some pics of the data plate on the left hand side of the dash too!
Addit - Charlie beat me to it.

Less money than a 21 year old public servant? :lol2:
Will be watching closely mate - look forward to seeing it take shape. :)

It may also be the carbi.......If you have a Zenith 36IV they tend to warp at the base and suck air. Also known to go around the bushes. Cost you about $250 to have it refurbished. If you have a solex ....well someone here will be able to help

Interesting, thanks guys. The chassis number is 25326882D. I'll see if I can find it in the list...
The fuel pump seems OK, My son cleaned it, disassembled it, cleaned the parts and reasembled it and the only issue is corrosion in the channel which holds the cork seal for the water trap. Any suggestions on getting a new seal (Rovacraft doesn't have parts for them) and also for repairing the corrosion?
Cheers,
Lane.

Definitely ex-army. Not sure what the body would have been?

Details from REMLR:
174-760 (ARN) 109 1969 Series 2A c6028 unk(engine) 25326882D (Chassis)	11.08.82 (Disposal)
The body would have been the standard canvas canopy.
Good luck with the project.

The fuel problem is almost certainly an air leak on the suction side of the pump - and the gasket on the strainer is a likely suspect.
Note the dimensions of the cork gasket and try a bearing supplier.
Clean up the sealing surface with a small wire brush, and if you can't get a good finish on it use a silicone gasket sealer on that side of the gasket.
When the pump was reassembled, it is essential that the screws holding it together are only tightened with the operating lever operated to its full extent, otherwise the diaphragm will fail very quickly.
Another point worth looking at is to remove the suction line from the tank (not a big job) and check that it has no rust holes or splits above the fuel line and that the gauze strainer on the bottom is not choked. Either of these problems will cause failure to deliver fuel.
Note that as an ex-army Landrover it will have had no upholstery except for the seat cushions - so strictly speaking it has been upholstered not reupholstered!

Thanks for sharing the photos Lane. It looks like a great project. I love the "chesterfield" lining on the doors. :D
The solid chassis is a big plus and will make your job easier.
Your next major area of concern is the firewall/bulkhead.
Good Luck and keep us updated.

Thanks all, can't believe how helpful everybody is!
I was away for a couple of days so unfortunately Landy Day (also known as Saturday) was unproductive.
JDNSW, The fuel pump was reassembled correctly and seems to work, so that's great. I agree with the sealing diagnosis and we'll try silicone with the old cork seal and see if we can get the fuel flowing.
Will post more when we have made more progress.
Drove past a house down the street today where there was a Landy that had been on fire, and noticing the excellent tyres decided to see if it was for sale. It was (this is genuinely a pathological condition, right?) and so I bought it. Turns out it's licensed and the poor bloke who owned it just fitted new front drums, cylinders, lines, skimmed the rears, etc., had the radiator rodded etc., and spent a lot of money on it, only to have it stolen and burned. The motor looks great, although needing lots of "soft" parts...
Now I'm wondering if it is too good to wreck... :(

Been stuck into the fire-damaged Series III, and have been down South for a couple, of days, so nothing at all since Thursday...
We did enjoy a bit of hunting, however, using my father's Triton 4wd ute, which performed OK in the greasy forest tracks most of the time. :)
I need a new battery for the camper - I picked up a used one for $33 last week from a wrecker to avoid buying a new one before I really need it and the used one won't hold charge. So, I don't know if the fuel pump works yet.
This week we'll get the old girl running and see how she goes.
How's your wrist?

Sounds good, Jono.
Good news for me too - I had a reply to my advert and have bought a complete Series III ute, without engine or gearbox, for $200. Hopefully I can pick it up next Saturday and we can get the second project really moving... :D

OK, have decided to do this project instead: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/series-3/82874-series-iii-burned-rebuild.html
So.... this car is for sale. Owes me $500. Wheel nuts were greased, doors close and open nicely, runs if you pour petrol down the carby, was shedded until recently and seems to have no rust at all to note. The point is, it seems to have been very well maintained. Should not be hard to bring her back to daily running, which is why I bought her in the first place. Ex-military Series II. Will sell with or without camper addition.
In Perth, near Midland.
