Unfortunately every iphone user in the world simultaneously trying to update their iphone is killing their activation server 8o . No joy for me yet! I might have to wait another 12 hours to get the update...:eek::spudnikcurse::spudnikcurse:

I'm away now!
this from the iphone forum on apple:
Apple - Support - Discussions - iPhone activation server temporarily ...
A trick I read on another forum that finally worked for me.
After you hit the update button, while it is extracting disconnect from the internet. The update will continue to go through. (Easiest way is to have network adapters window open and disable your adapter immediately after telling it to update.

Can anyone get a stereo bluetooth headset to work properly after this upgrade? I Can't.
And I see from a quick search on some Apple forums, a lot of others can't either. Very frustrating.

So far I'd say the single best thing is that you can send emails with the big keyboard (turned on side). When the phone is standing on it's end with the small kbd the keys are a little small for a big thumbed person like myself... particularly if on a bus which is moving :) So that's a big plus.
Next is the spotlight search... really useful.
Next is the stocks apps which is much better.
Then MMS... which it always should have had anyway. ....
Cut and paste which is neat but I'm not sure how often I'll use it.
I'm sure I'll keep finding things.

Yeah the MMS is brilliant. Finally! I think the cut and past function will be handy too.
Was happy with the update...went fairly smoothly.

The thing hasn't crashed or shown any sign of flakiness(??) That wasn't the case when it was released :o
One thing that I noted was that spotlight only searches for mail messages in their subject line, not message body.

What APN are you using? :)
EDIT:
I used tether me (http://tetherme.lstoll.net/'message_type=success&message=Details%20sent%21%20Please%20check%20your% 20mail%20on%20your%20phone.) to generate the config file. It suggested telstra.internet. My phone was set to telstra.iph. I set it to that as I'd hate to think that the T would be pleased with me changing APN's. Anyway it worked fine with telstra.iph so I can't see any way they would know or care.
Once this gets out the Optus network is going to get a even worse I suspect (if it's possible) as people may be able to use their internet allowance...

Its no faster, its only the new model 3GS thats quicker. Main updates were the ability to landscape anything using the keyboard, the addition of voice notes, Safari upgrade, supposed bluetooth ability with open market headsets, MMS... FINALLY...... and one or two other internal things.
In the US, you can take your original 3G iPhone to a store, say "Not happy Jan, want the new model" and they copy all your existing info across to a brand new 3GS, say "thanks for coming" and you walk out with a brand spanker for absolutely no cost whatsoever!!
Here and in the UK, you need to pay out your contract and then buy a new one....:mad:

Can I just say you are right on the main items, however I keep finding lots of little things that are much better. Tiny refinements that seem to be throughout the thing. It really is very good. Especially for Free.

Someone has got to say it. As much as I love Apple I am told they are charging a fair bit for the iphone. It's what they do. Somebody has to pay.
I'm told that the deal that they get in the US does have conditions attached. It's not like I got a new iphone on a contract last week and I'd like another new one.
EDIT: I just noticed they charge for it (http://blogs.zdnet.com/Apple/?p=4212).
