Howdy Peoples
I've just recently bought a Deafener 130 TD5.
The book says 10,000km service intervals but my mechanic is suggesting I would be much better off if I do a grease and oil change at 5,000km intervals (eg inbetween the standard log book servicing)
215km on the clock last serviced at 210km. Worth booking in?

For extreme arduous use, maybe every 5000, but the TD5 has a centrifical oil filter (as well as the normal filter) and in the UK they go for 20,000Kms between service. The extra filter keeps the oil cleaner much longer. Every 5,000 and you a re probably changing pretty clean oil, which is a waste of money really.
I'd think 10,000Kms for Aust conditions is all you need unless you are costantly in bulldust etc and working it under severe conditions.

Doing your UJs every 5,000 is a good idea though

Oh yeah - sorry. Not your ignorace at all, I should have typed it out in full.
I see you are down south from me. Where are you taking your 130 to get it serviced?

As long as you are using the correct fully synthetic oil,& not driving in arduous conditions, you are throwing your money to the birds changing the oil every 5k.
In most driving conditions they will be OK going to 20k.
I had the oil tested twice in the MY99 one i had ,bought new,by Castrol & it was OK at 20k,but there advice was to change it.Both times it was also tested at 15k as well,& advice was to keep going to 20k

When i first go my defender td5, due to the owner keeping the records for tax purposes i was a bit lost as to the service history, i replaced the oil every 5000km for first 2 services with semi synthetic, then i went to the 10000km with full synthetic, My reason was to flush the unknown oil out with the good stuff, also to slowly convert the engine to full synthetic oil. No point putting good stuff in if it is mixing with ****...

To my mate in McLaren Vale.
I know there is a Land Rover "expert" in Willunga but it would be a big kick in the guts to this other guy who has never done anything wrong.
I am not sure if he is using synthetic or not. I will check, might be worth changing over now and replacing again at 220K then changing to 10k intervals.
I do alot of vineyard work so she works in reasonably dusty conditions as my air filters will testify ;)

Uni Joints..doh
Sorry had a blonde moment.....
Still have a heap (whole box) of top end water proof Morey's grease that we used to use in the harvesters (which I have just recently sold).
This stuff is gold in hot dusty conditions with heaps of vibration, acid and regular washdowns.
Should suit the deafener well :D

Diesels have changed alot in the last 15 years and changing the oil in a Tdi onwards every 5k is a waste of oil, people who believe their engines will last longer changing at 5k are kidding themselves, most if not all engine failures with LR diesels and V8's are caused by overheating not by wearing out. There is alot of older mechanics that go by the 5k rule but the days of 2H engines are long gone,my Tdi has never had 5k changes and it has no sludge build up on the head after almost 12 years and the Td5 has a better filter system than it has,the 20k changes in my L322 are another matter, oil has improved 10 fold but it isn't good enough to last that long. Ha! I work on a vineyard too, up in the Adelaide Hills (Balhannah) growing Savignon Blanc.
-1.7 degrees out there overnight last night, and was still below zero at 7:30 this morning. Probably pretty cold mornings over your way too.

Although this is changing (hijacking) the topic - I did my Honours thesis at Maslins - and it was in Geology, not perving! But when the temps were cold down there in winter you'd still see some sights - headlights on full beam. :D

Nothing anywhere near that cold! 4.5 deg has been the coldest this winter.
