View Full Version : LPG on my TD5

I have LPG fitted to my TD5 which gives a significant performance increase interms of power but costs pretty much the same to run when the LPG is switched on as when it is switched off.

Is this right? I was lead to believe that fuel costs should be cheaper.

I tend to only use the LPG when towing etc when extra power is needed, can't see the point otherwise more power equals more wear and it is nicer to drive on straigh diesel anyway, its a bit like driving a two-stroke with a small but noticable "power band" type accelleration at about 2000rpm (no tacho:cool:).

It's great for towing the boat though:burnrubber:

Anyone else got LPG with similar experiences?

Cheers
That annoying newbie that asks heaps of questions but has no answers....

I don't have the answer to your question but if one were to be believing claims such as less diesel usage when running with gas what about the claim that when running diesel gas your engine will have less wear? so why not run it all the time?

I think I would of chipped it for more power before spending the dollars to put gas in.

My Tdi is on gas and it depends on how you drive it,if you put your foot down you will use fuel, thats the way it works. You wrote that you only use it for towing, you will use more fuel when towing regardless but the performance is better.Run it all the time and drive it as you normally would and you will see a saving,I find the biggest saving is on the open road,I lift off the throttle and let it cruise along and I can get an extra 100km's to a tank no trouble. From my understanding, the LPG is supposed to give you a better burn of fuel ( approx 99% instead of 80%) Therefore you either can have ~20% more power available or ~20% less fuel for the same power, but not both.

Thats been my experience. Pat

I pick my 110 TD5 up tomorrow and it has Ecoshot LPG and has been chipped (don't know the details of that yet). From the test-drive compared to a standard 2004 model the effect of the turbo is greatly increased ... feel the "whoooomf" at 1800rpm (tacho fitted).

However, the ecoshot system is adjustable and apparently this can control the economy / power ratio.

First time to test it out is at the end of next week - Melbourne > Sydney, then a few days after Sydney > Sunny Coast. I suppose I could try with and without the lpg but I'll probably use it until it runs out and then top up. 120l diesel tank means there's plenty of chance.

I've done three tanks with LPG on and three tanks with LPG off, alternating between the to and using the same servo to fill up at every time.

I use less diesel when the LPG is switched on but the cost in $/100km works out about the same either way.

It is interesting to note that it has been suggested you can tune for either more power or better fuel economy.

I'm happy with the way it is, so I run on diesel most of the time and now just switch to LPG for the big hills and when towing, the world is a happy place:D

I was just wondering if anyone has heard if LPG adds to or shortens the life of a diesel motor?

And also is the retuning for economy v power a difficult thing?

The ecoshot people claim all sorts of things ... ECO SHOT : Gas injection for your turbo diesel..... (http://www.ecoshot.com.au/)

Adjusting the ecoshot is easy - undo a locking nut and turn a screw. Apparently only 1/8th turn at a time ... but I wouldn't do so without giving them a call to make sure I was doing it right. If LPG goes wrong it does so quite spectacularly :p

Sadly I do not have an eCo Shot, mine is a standard BRC gas pump etc.

Might take it to a gas expert and see what they have to say about it.

Yours is simpler than Eco-Shot?

Eco-Shot appears to be a pretty crude system in comparison to, say, the Sequent II system! Gas Tek Global - Diesel Gas Injection Systems (http://www.gastek.com.au/)

yes - PO says that he chose Ecoshot intentionally for its 'simpleness' - no computers, etc.

I'm sure there are pros and cons, but it's been on for a year and (touch wood ) it's been fine.
