300TDI water temp sensors - two types

Hi all

Further to my previous thread about high water temps after changing coolant/temp sensor and thermostat, I have just found out that there are 2 different types of sensors

There is one with a black band and one with a green band.

Unfortunately I am not sure what colour the original one was, but I replaced it with a green banded sensor. I think this might be the problem.

Can anyone tell me why there is two different types of sensors?

I am now trying to buy a black banded sensor to see if that brings the temp gauge back to normal.

Looking at the LR parts list, black is for the Defender & green is for the Discovery.
It looks like you could be on the right track.

HAVE YOU VERIFIED THE TEMPERATURE WITH A KNOWN GOOD THERMOMETER????

Apologies for shouting but it's really important that you do so BEFORE spending money.

Something as simple as a poor earth connection to the engine will cause the temperature gauge to go into the red, even when the engine is at a normal operating temperature.

Yep!!!

Independent thermometer was used at top of radiator and thermostat housing ....and temp ranged around 130 degrees...

I did look through the rubbish bin last night and found my old senser that I took out...and it has a black band on it!

Well...

Good news, I received the replacement temp sensor with the black band in the mail on Monday and installed it.

Instant results...temp sits just above "C" and the heater blasts nice warm air!

So now I can relax knowing that the coolant system is good for a long time.

Next job...this weekend will be a fuel filter change and sediment bowl clean out...fingers crossed I don't have any issues!

Just make sure you leave the plastic bleed screw well alone then... ;)

Yes they are....
Replace it...

5/16" UNC stainless bolt with an O ring or washer fixes it.
