I'm interested in getting a roll bar fitted to my S3 landrover. I removed the roof due to fume build up in the cabin.

I don't have the tools or skills to make one myself, so I called up for a quote. It was $1500. (way too much!!!)

Any ideas on how to do this on a budget??

(or fix the fume build up in the cabin)

Cheers.

I would be using steam pipe welded to plates, bolted to the chasis. Don't scrimp when making a roll bar. Those that merely bolt to the body are more of just a light bar.

Why were you getting a fume build up in the cab? Most Land Rovers have ample ventilation to dissipate any fumes. Do you have leaks in the exhaust?

this is the grab bar on my shorty. It's not bolted to the chassis but a couple of bars straight down from the over head bar to the chassis would probably work (unless your racing it;)). Mine is bolted through the original cab holes on top of the tub. As I said it's a grab bar, for shooting off and something to hang onto hooning around in the bush. In summer I take the roof off and It's piece of mind for the missus.
If your in Perth I can do one a hell of a lot cheaper to your design.

Thanks for the reply. I'm from brissy, a bit far from Perth.

Yeah when i got my quote thats what I was told. I suppose the qoute was reasonable given what he was going to do, but i'm reluctant to spend that.. partly because I will never recover that cost.. (i'm a new land rover owner...maybe thats a concept i'll adapt to eventually ??)

the words budget and roll bar do not usually belong in the same sentence the exception being something like...

Hi, I have an unlimited budget, can you make a roll bar please?

if you're retrofitting a roll bar for a series III it must be equiped to handle the seat belts and that means it needs to be design engineered.

more $$...

I would suggest that you are looking at about $100 for materials (minimum) 4 hours to make it and fit it and about 2 hours worth of engineer time.

dont expect to get as properly certified roll bar for sub $500.
