Gday

I thought I might post up some pics of my latest project. When I rolled my blue Defender I had a couple of spare buckled rims. Then a mate gave me a bent Sunny and then another gave me another :p

I've been meaning to start it for ages but haven't got round to doing it

I'll be honest it's not completely Landrover one of the rims is off a Gutlux :( but you can't see the six stud pattern so it's all good :D

I'll be borrowing a mate of mines welder in the near future to finish it off

Here's the beginning:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2009/06/380.jpg

With the top on, I'll be welding handles of some description onto it so it's removable, upon saying that I guess I should put a flu in as well

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2009/06/381.jpg

And down inside. I've knocked the centres out of two rims. The two Landrover centres are on the bottom together, then the Sunny centres are knocked together to provide better air flow.

You can't see it in the pics but the main fire pot is only 3 rims high. The bottom rim has a door cut in it, that will be hinged. This will be for the baked spuds :)

Weight isn't to much of an issue, it's not really for travelling. If I go bush it's usually with mates and they have flat trays so I'll just stick it on the back of theres

you wanna try doing it with a stack of truck brake drums!

My old man made one out of truck rims when I was born :o

I'll have to get some pictures of it sometime, that is a bloody good heater. Fill it with decent blocks of wood and it burns for two days, fill it with radiator pine, open the vent and it glows red

JC if that was the case I reckon you would find me somewhere under the closest bridge, not sure how I'd cope losing another one :BigCry:

Ive got 2 we use regularly.
A smaller one made from a tractor front rim and a bigger one made from a rear tractor rim and truck rim.
Dont use the bigger one that often,a mate threw over a tonne of my good jarrah rings into it one nite whilst we consumed copious amounts of homebrew,we wernt cold:cool::cool::cool:.
Make sure it can draw plenty of air from the bottom or it will smoke heaps, also makesure it is able to loose its coals/ash at the bottom or that too will choke it down.Nothing like a nice hot smoke free fire outside at this time of the year.

I took the pictures about half way through todays work. It has notches in the second rim up so hopefully it should go like a train :D

Once I get it all welded up I'll have to stoke it right up to get the paint off

I made one from an old enamel washing machine drum and 3 pieces of steel fence post.

All it needed was a quick spot grind to remove the enamel for the legs to be welded on.
Literally 20 minutes and it was done!!

They had a beauty at the Caravan and Camping show.
Similar size to a 9kg gas bottle, all packed into a carry bag,had hotplate and a rack for a camp oven.It was so good at dissapating its heat you could put your hand over the top of the chimney.
Called a PIG or HOT PIG or something. Its on the list to make one for the camper trailer.

yeah it was called an ozpig we made one out of a 9kg gas bottle easy as and it economical.1 log 15cm wide and about 25cm long lasted 5-6 hours cooking a roast

Those Ozpigs pigs look good, next project..... :p

I'm thinking about cutting the plough disc down so it will fit just nicely in the top. Then welding the rim around the bottom to help stabilize it

The vents:

I'm surprised you can even get it to burn when the wood is wet from radiator water! :D

Probably.
These were removed from the scrap metal dump up the tip.
I guess its just as naughty to have them as milk crates.

Too cold/windy to light an outside fire here today,BUT the fire in the shed has been going flat out for 3 days:cool::cool::cool:
A mate called in this arvo for a beer saying how warm and cosy the shed was.

Well got the door welded on, and I've had a change of plans with the top. I was on the roof of the new house and we found a BBQ grill leaning against the chimney. So I snavelled it up, welded some handles on and hey presto :D

Eh?! You actually found a BBQ grill up on the roof leaning against the chimney? Is this a common thing down under or something?

I like the end result. Be sure to post a shot of it in use if you get a chance!

Hi Binford
People put the grill over the chimney during the warmer months when its not used to stop birds nesting in there, bees and possums also can be unwanted chimney guests.Father christmas needs to keep an eye open for them.
I can imagine you thinking us aussies have a mixed grille up on the roof whilst the fire is going:p:p:p:p:p
Andrew

Jock The Rock

I think that must have been the case, there is now a new chimney so it wasn't needed for that purpose any longer

I had it cranking last night, went well even though it was ****ing down with rain and the wood was wet :( we had close to 4 inches over night

I didn't think to take a pic sorry, next time

And this thing cooks a mean steak :D

I'm happy with the handles in the grill too, they stick out far enough to not get hot. This makes it easy to lift on and off. Another advantage I found of the grill was you can boil a billy the same time you can cook your steak :)

Ahhhh..... That makes perfect sense! I light a wad of newspaper in our woodstove every few weeks to chase out with smoke any critters who might try to make my chimney their summer home. Works quite effectively and sure beats having to climb up my 10/12 pitch roof with the BBQ grill!

Happy grilling!

Don't know if those aluminium beer kegs would stand up to the heat?
Still, a puddle of aluminium woul dbe easier to weigh in ;)

I have a feeling some of the old ones are alloy though

I remember my old man once telling me about a fella. He was a scallop diver in Hobart who died; from memory. He had used a keg as a pressure whatsername for his compressor. It couldn't handle the pressure, blew up and took half his tinny with it

Andy, kegs are useless as milk crates.

Go and steal some milk crates if you need some.
