P38 fumes in cabin

I am after some feedback on known causes of exhaust fumes entering P38 cabins.

I have looked at the back door seal a few times but that seems supple and in good nick. Vehicle does however sometimes get dust in around the back door area as well. The really funny part is it does not appear to happen consistently at any set speed or under any set conditions.

Is it a trick? Or, should I just keep quiet and enjoy the floating sensation the fumes are starting to provide?!? :eek::twisted:

Please help if you have any clues, I am at a loss with this.:confused:

i removed the rear door seal to my RRC and afterwards noticed a lot of fumes. I really must replace it one day lol

I drove for about 6 hours none stop on a trip quite recently in the Series III & couldn't understand why the fumes were so bad. Usually you have to either have all the sides & back down to stop the fumes coming in, or, as I had on this occasion, all the sides up, so you get plenty of ventilation ... but it made no difference. I thought I was imagining it, however, the following day I was as sick as a dog ... :eek:

I couldn't for the life of me understand it ... then a friend asked if I had "tinkered" with the heater vents. After owning the Series III for I don't know how long, I was driving one day, & yes, I played with the vents, though why on earth I chose to do so is beyond me.

Anyway, to cut a long story short ... because I had adjusted the vents, and the heater hose has a hole in it, which is next the the exhaust manifold, which had a dirty great crack along it, it was leaking, & the fumes were sucked straight into the front of the cab ... :eek:

I know this will have nothing to do with your problem, but reading it just reminded me how things are often not what they seem! A new exhaust manifold fixed the problem, though I should really do something about the heater hose (which I've been going to do for ... hmmm ... quite a few years). :angel:

Thanks and thankyouz... just starting to get into the smell, not sure about the headaches ;) though... beer hangovers never hurt anywhere near this much!

Have not even looked at heater-exhaust manifold relations. Come to think of it the HVAC panel has been showing the "check the book" symbol, maybe something for me to look up in that rave troubleshooting guide too.

Please keep the ideas coming if you have them, I will attempt anything and everything in current state of mind(-lessness)!!!:eek::D:p:twisted:

the exhaust manifolds are very common to crack, you can sell straight away by a chuffing sound when your head is under the bonnet with the engine running.

If it is coming through from the rear, check that someone has not removed the bungs from the rear wheel well, as it could suck fumes in through there aswell.

Thanks Andy, haven't rreally noticed any chuffing ever, and the mehcanic who just put the new short motor in was pretty thourought with his checks on all the old stuff getting re-used... However, I will definetley have a good look at that spare wheel well tomorrow... it currently holds a LPG donut tank and perhaps this is all connected to when that was fitted a few years ago. Can't remember if that was around the time it started... God bless carbon monoxide! ;):eek::p

Mine hasn't been on for a long time.

I got to Graeme Cooper's this arvo for some work to be done and, wouldn't you know it, the chequebook symbol is on.

Fortunately, I have a diagnostic computer to attend to it.
