View Full Version : Questions to Puma owners re immobiliser/alarm

After my recent tangle with the new 130's alarm (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/90-110-130-defender-county/81399-solved-help-please-bleeping-puma-alarm.html) I decided to RTFM to see what else I was missing. Now the manual, in all its brevity, does mention a procedure for un-locking the immobiliser in case of a key fob failure/loss. It requires the entry of a security code via the ignition lock. I thought that info might come in handy, out near Whoopwhoop the day the fob expires. Funny thing is, I wasn't provided any such security code ;). I contacted my dealer, and they told me there was no such thing as a security code for my vehicle . I also mentioned that I wasn't given a security code for the radio ... but no such thing either apparently
Ok, so who's right, the manual or my dealer? Were any of you kind Puma owners out there provided with such code(s)? If the answer to that is 'No', does that mean the immobiliser is un-locked by key alone?
Thanks for your help.

The manual refers to the procedure for entering the code. I was not given the code and had a rather heated conversation with the sales people who were adamant there is no such thing.
After insisting with the people in the service department, who have different computer systems they actually found my code in the system and wrote it down for me.
It does exist. Be firm.

Should not be activated on the Australian Puma's. I questioned this as well and was told we don't have it activated.

I also asked about the alarm code and was told similarly
BUT I was given the code for the audio unit and have used it.

This is what they told me as well. If my fob broke I was to just use the key. I unlocked the car for them with the key and the alarm went beserk when I opened it and it would not start. So they looked for the code and sure enough they found it.
Have not used it yet, but I did have to on my Discovery before this.

There is both a radio security code and a engine security code - I was given both, and have used the radio code for my replacement (under warranty) stereo. This is fact, period.

I have the radio code and have used it on several occasions now. EKA though remains a mystery. Will check again and get back to you on this one.

It worries me a bit that I'm confusing the service advisor of what is arguably one of the larger LR dealers in this country, who presumably has access to the technical experts, as well as a direct line to LRA ;)
Looks like I will just have to try this out ... I'll do it at 2 a.m., that should even the score with my neighbour's stereo

Like Kenley I separated my key from fob and no way would the engine start with key alone in ignition - even with the fob only 500mm away from the key.

Ok, Test 1, as I drove out this morning: unlocked the doors using the fob, then chucked it into the passenger seat, inserted the key, pre-heat, turned to start ... and the old girl came alive without complaint :o
Tomorrow I'll unlock the doors with the key (I know the alarm will go off) and see what can be done without the fob altogether...

When I picked my 110 up I asked for the "EKA" code, they got it to me eventually, but had to email LRUK to get it.
Cheers,

If I left the keys in the ignition sometimes the immobilizer would activate and would have to lock and then unlock the vehicle with the fob before I could restart. A real pain when stopping and starting around the farm and no need to lock up.
The dealer disabled the immobilzer and alarm so no more problems that I may be stranded with a faulty remote. Just have to worry about being stolen:o
I have a security code for the radio which I have used, I assumned that the ignition used the same code??

Well it's been confirmed there is an EKA code. It would appear to be buried in the dealer's IDS computer screens somewhere.
If anyone with a Blackbox Solutions' Faultmate or RovaCom and a Puma can have a look at the Lucas 10AS module pages this would help sort out something, as I suspect that the Blackbox software will display the EKA for the alarm ECU.

Each of these:
Radio Code
Key Code
EKA code
are a separate 4 digit code.

After reading my handbook I contacted the dealer by phone and was given the emergency 4 digit code with no fuss at all. Maybe it is a regional thing but if you have an alarm I would definately look for the code.
Regarding the vehicle not starting without the alarm fob being in close proximity to the key-this is not unique to the Defender. I drive a light commercial vehicle at work which has a combined key/fob i.e. all one unit. It is not possible to get a key cut to size and use it. The combined unit is necessary. Before I always got a spare key cut but not any more. The whole unit must be purchased.
