range rover noise

hello people im new to this so i have a 93 range rover vogue se, it seems to have a noise coming from the front end when you go up a steep hill, and from a standing start if you floor it it will make the noise seems to be coming from the right front wheel like a crunching noise,but doesnt make it if you drive it normally. if anybody can help that would great thanks luke.

Check the engine/gearbox mounts first. If one has let go, it can create all sorts of strange noises when the engine is working hard (going by my experience).

2nd that. Also have someone beside the car when you accelarate to try and hear just where the noise is coming from. May be a CV or wheel bearing starting to go. Bob

I'm probably wrong, not knowing enough about how the Rangies work. I had a simmilar thing with a Pajero I used to own. Turned out it was the chain in the transfer case had stretched and was slipping. I don't know if there is a chain in the transfer on a Rangie but may be something to think about.

checked wheelbearing all good there, we went out again today 4wding and the noise seems to be something to do with the abs brakes , you can feel it through the brake pedal and here the noise as well, anybody herd of this before cheers luke.

Luke, your model has traction control on the rear wheels, the crunching type of noise is possibly coming from the modulator valve as it pulses the rear brakes alternately to gain traction by momentarily locking the wheel that is spinning. The ABS modulator is where a brake booster is on aother models, in front of the firewall drivers side.

Could it possibly be coming from there? If it turns out to be, this is normal when wheel spin is experienced off road and on slippery surfaces under hard throttle.

Mate, theres a not so well known trick to quieten down tranny noise.

the lever between the seats ( the bigger one) push this all the way forward.


then turn the key 2 clicks the other way.

makes any RR quiet as a mouse

i have a 2a landy as well it makes heaps of tranny noises but keeps going strong thanks for the help :p
