I just bought myself a Unimog - sight unseen - I know its dumb but since driving one in the Army, I've always thought it would be the ultimate off road camper. Now I'll find out:eek:
This one comes with a cherry picker as well - so will need to have a bit of work done before it's usable as a truck.
Anyone know where I could sell a Palfinger PK6700 Cherry Picker?

What's the inspection date on the fingerer? If it's 10 years or more it's not worth a crumpet:(

Thanks - the training wheels are for training - down the railways. - they will also be gotten rid of.

Nice truck...it all seems do-able :D
It's got a new engine - only 10,000km on it - then the place who owned it went broke.
Next to get an Medium duty truck licence. I drove a few trucks in the Army in RSA, Unimogs were my favourite (except for Ratel Armoured cars) - so much more comfortable than the other trucks.

A football mate of my eldest son imported one from Switzerland and converted it to RHD...you are well ahead.

I looked at doing that - but you end up with a very old one ( even though it's not got many km's on it) and it drives like a 1950 truck - this one is an 1984 model, power steering, air over hydraulic brakes, 8 speed gearbox ( 8 speeds in forward and reverse)
Bigger tyres, and possible a "fast axle" conversion is on the cards in the near future

Nice.... I'd like to have a mog here eventually.:)
You will be able to take a short cut via the railway with that one:twisted:

Oh, that is nice, and in a good colour too.
Put the cherry picker in the backyard and you can forget about swings and trampolines for the kids.

Keep the train wheels, they could be very handy.
God knows there aren't any trains using the tracks..

I'll send they back to NSW - from what I've heard of their rail system, they should fit them to all cars and get some use out of it

What a great buy. Would you tell us all how much it cost you? Would be interested in a PM if it is not a public thing.
Where did you get it from? I have had a look off and on but like someone above posted, most are pretty old now. Yours looks fantastic :D Will make the ultimate camper I reckon.

Bought it at an auction, always wanted a Mog - and hopefully this one is as good as it looks.
It's going to cost me $1300 to ship from Sydney to Brisbane, but since I don't know when last it had a good service, I reckon it's not worth the risk of driving the 1000km with the cherry picker etc still attached.

Iain I am seriously seriously green with envy, set up with care you will be able to go anywhere in the world with that one.
Is it RHD? generally Mogs didn't come out in anything other than LHD but I believe that has changed in the newer models. My fav is the 416 but they are getting old and are basic when it comes to comfort
I would just like to say it again - I am sooooooo green with envy

Definitely RHD - The new (SBU) shape are available in LHD and RHD, there is even an official conversion kit for the LHD to RHD. With luck I will have it on the driveway next weekend - right now I'm up in Wandoan doing a bit more pipeline route investigation and there has been a lot of rain here - even with my new BFG MT KM2's I'm not game to head into the State forest by myself - now if I had my Mog, then maybe I'd be game.
I did 2 year national service in South Africa - Engineering Corp - Survey Squadron. Our motto was unofficially - to boldly go where no-one had gone before" - I still remember what a very experienced off road driving instructor in the Army told me - 4wd like Land Rovers lets you get further in before you get stuck, and big 4wds like the Unimogs let you get so far in that no-one can get you out:)
Needless to say we managed to prove that - one of our NCO's got a Mog ambulance stuck going where it should not have tried, and due to ever increasing rain, we got our Samil 100 6x6 recovery truck stuck trying to get the Mog out, eventually, we had to swallow our pride and ask the neighbouring Armoured corp for an 8x8 tank recovery truck to get the rest out. The NCO went back to be a Sapper shortly there-after:eek:

Sound like a good buy Iain,in one of UK mags a guy fitted the portal axles off a Mog onto his 110 for use in the Highlands.

Hi Iain,
Have you seen this thread about a camper build on a brand new mog: Unimog U1750L/38 camper for sale - AWD Sales Australia (http://www.unimog.com.au/awd/used/usedm8.htm)
There are dozens of pictures of the build up if you click on the two bottom icons on that page. This is the most interesting one: http://www.unimog.com.au/awd/photos/U1750L38steve/construction/slides.htm
He apparently spent over $500K buying it & setting it up.
Cheers

See that one, down to $135K now. He started out with a brand new truck ( U1750 is much bigger than mine) - which is about $200K, then built something similar to a Winnebago (without the high quality finish) - in the end he lost most of the ground clearance and off road driveabilty of the Unimog IMHO
I was thinking something more like this:

Budget has not been set - but I know it's not going to be cheap, but certainly not $500K
I mean - green with a pink interior - some thing's not right there :)

I didn't realise a new one was $200K  Like you, I also frowned when I saw the light pink interior.... (it is probably called salmon or something like that).
BTW - your pictures are just coming out as red "X" squares for me.

I've just realised that not only is there a cherry picker on the Unimog, but there is also a 3.2 ton HIAB on it as well.:) The HIAB is bound to be worth more than the cherry picker - anyone got any idea about what something like that would be worth - it's a 1984 model Palfinger PK6700 and it's good for 3.2 tons at 2m
The truck is on it's way home :):):), and I'll probably have to get a new roller door for the shed - the current one is only 2.7m high, and I think I'll need to get one at least 3.4m high. It will be like driving a block of flats :)

Sorry to dissappoint you Iain, but as with the CP the SLC is not likely to be of much value. Any of this type of machinary has to be regularly tested and inspected. A twenty year old piece of equiptment requires a total stripdown and I believe X-ray and crack testing, usually it becomes uneconomical. Call Palfinger, they are in Formation St Wacol ph 32715811, You will find them obliging and knowledgable.
Ian.

P.S. Do they come up very often for auction?

I will take plenty of photos over the next few months :)
I have seen a few up for sale over the years, but normally they are way out of my price range - even old one with high mileage seem to go for $45K+ A good 07/08 tax refund and the deal made to sell my Jaguar XJ-S and I had the money to put a realistic bid on one.
I took a big risk forking out a fair amount of money on something sight unseen, hope my instincts and logic about it work out, otehrwise I've bought a very large lemon .
Spares are expensive here, but there are a lot cheaper in the UK and even with shipping costs, it much cheaper to get parts in from England or Germany - the problem being I will have to wait - especially for heavy stuff that will come via sea freight.
Right now I have to work on getting a taller shed door - mine is only 2.7m high, so I'll be looking at getting one at least 3.4m high so I can fit the truck inside.
To put things into Land Rover perspective - I found this photo.
