View Full Version : P38a with TD6?

I have an 88 RRC and and my long term plan is a P38a diesel. My main criteria for the engine are economy and refinement. I have just bought a Disco to run for a while and form a view on the TD5 engine. So far I am pleasantly surprised by its economy, power and smoothness but disappointed by the noise. Any views on a better motor for a P38a and whether a BMW TD6 (not the TD V6) is feasible, would be much appreciated. By the way, my old standard RR beats the standard Disco for comfort, hill climbing and crossing humps and ditches.

Guys,
It seems that there's 1 year delay for the news between USA (rangerovers.net) and Australia, in both ways.
Some here have big news like Patrol GU snorkel mod and other's in UK have just released TD6 transplant in a P38 (in fact the 3.0 diesel BMW engine of an X5).
You're giving me too much work, i have to survey 2 excellent bulletin boards:p
Cheers

Thank you for the reply. Where can I buy a Rangie with a TDv6 in it? (a classic or a P38a for under $30,000).

Hey Flo!
welcome down under.. see you have migrated from the RR.net playground to this one as well.... thought you may have been following the French rugby Team here :(:D just a few days late ...
Actually, La Perouse once visited here as well (1788) ...but he was just a few days late also! Had he been a few days earlier we might have been celebrating July14 instead of January 26!:wasntme:
if you can supply us with a good source of BMW 3.0 diesel engines.. you'll have a great business opportunity!
cheers

Hi Flo, I have been reading about the BMW 3L diesel conversion on RR.net, but the bigget problem is we never gor p38 diesels here in Aus, which is where most parts come from. Also i havent been following BMWs, but the cheapest crashed L322 so far was $15000 Au which is a very expensive donor.
Wait for pics of the next snorkel aussie......

I hope you are referring to the snorkel that you are going to install in my car? :D
I'll post the pics... don't you worry about that. I just need someone with the talent and tools to do the hard part... make it fit without it looking like ****! :o

Allright, that's a problem. Can you import one? Those are cheap as chips in Uk especially with a blown engine. I believe 1000 AUD get one. Shipping and taxes will cost more than the vehicle itself.
About the engine, do you have diesel bimmers over here ? 330D, 530D
If not, you could even import diesel 3.0 BMW engine (that's the engine of the diesel L322).
As i do have the same engine as you (V8), i'm considering options for swap in the farest future as possible.
I know there's 4.6 V8 to 2.8 Mitsubishi Diesel in uk but those runs like a crap.
About the snorkel. I found this back : Picasa Web Albums - Daniel - P38 Snorkel (http://picasaweb.google.com.au/dck7aok/P38Snorkel#)
I can no longer track this guy to ask him some questions.
In the past he told me that EAS was still there.
I looked for a long time at a safari patrol Gu snorkel and i don't know it fit.
Cheers

Don't know what that's off, but it looks like a fairly nice fit. Anyone know what that snorkel is from? Or who the driver/owner is/was? HooRoo, Dave & "the pretty pig"

It's a patrol GU snorkel from Safari. This guy is from yours, track him back :D
Looks fine but a bit low with the roof line IMHO.
I wanted to go this way as this guy is still on EAS but it appears that it was mandatory to cut the hood for the outlet of the snorkel. If you get a safari snorkel in hands it's pretty obvious: the outlet is very high.
No problem at cutting my rangies' hood;) but i don't want to ask my customers to cut the hood. I rather prefer to cut a side panel in case i need to sell the vehicle.
I'll take you inform about my commercial version.
If anyone is interested about the steering guard RR-EVOLUTION, i have to inform you that it's a LHD only ...but with 3 or 4 demands, i'll could work the RHD brackets
Cheers

To be honest Flo, I would rather not cut bonnet either - I reckon that the "clam shell" design provides a nice air pocket to keep water out or at least below the lip if all is going well. Would prefer cutting guard...
I will definetly keep watching the P38 pages and threads to see what comes out of all this. There seems to be heaps of committment to "rangie swimming" in the short time I have been looking at AULRO!
It really sucks (no pun intended P38 drowners:D) not being able to swim with confidence, especially when travelling with snorkeled Cruisers and Patrols... its about the only thing we really have to "give up" to them as far as off road capability is concerned.
Am curious about bash plate... what would be the cost landed in Melbourne do you think?

150 euros of shipping + 300 euros of bash plate =
784.068 AUD

Very tempting, but I don't think it would work on my car as it would act like a shovel. It needs something to fill the gap between the plate and the bull bar.
Here's my poor attempt at illustrating what it might look like on my car.

Paul,
It's exactly what you are looking for. The front part is stuck near the radiator frame so don't act as a shovel.
