Looking at buying either a Discovery 2 or a defender but not sure which way to go, will be for general touring, which offers more room?

Depends on whether you want comfort or capacity

Without any shadow of doubt the Defender offers a lot more room than a Discovery2. Also the longer wheel base improves things. However, the Defender misses out on the little creature comforts - like cruise control, climate control, ..., and sound proofing.
The Puma seats are the best of the standard Defender seats with the higher back. Personally I find them better than my D2's seats, but then I didn't like those as much as the D1's and seats are an individual thing.
Having toured in a D1, D2 and a both Tdi and Puma Defenders, I prefer the Defenders.

Defender with out a doubt, plus more payload - unless you are talking about driver elbow room, in which case the Discovery wins. The Defender has ten inch longer wheelbase, and the load space is higher, although the door is narrower.

Also depends on what you mean by 'touring'. If you mean blacktop towing a van...then the Disco might be the go, but if you are going to be hitting the rough stuff for thousands of km's then I would go the Defender.
I have a disco cause its compromise. Got to be good around town, do the long touring and the rough driving in the high country. Defender would be good at 2 of the 3, whereas the disco does all fairly well. Load space is an issue in the disco, but there is only two of us so no probs.

The answer to your question is the defender. But as the others have basically said this is at the expense of comfort. Either way what a great choice - cheers JP

What McDisco said. :thumbsup::thumbsup:
Do you want a tractor or do you want something a bit more civilised?
Also JDNSW makes a good point about elbow room. I'd owned and driven an old SIIA for many years without a problem, got into a Defender and it felt so claustrophobic with lack of elbow room I couldn't wait to get out of it. Strange.
Take test drives in both and get a feel is probably the best bet.
My two bobs worth.
