View Full Version : How do you think ash went in the 4wd action "Off-road world challenge???

Well i'm thinking most of you would have seen the latest 4wd Action dvd N0.136 featuring Ash in the Rangie, Terry in the Jeep and of course Roothy with milo. I myself thought the rangie went pretty well considering that the point system could have been on the more serious side of things.
Thought it was a bit weird though have a late model Wangler up against two earlier model 4x4's. Its funny how roothy always makes fun of the landys when in nearly every dvd he has some sort of a break down himself. Ash did pretty good with his rangie the way he had it setup and i think he should have won the challenge by far. (Not just saying that cause i'm a landy lover):p:p
Cheers simo

Yeah, I reckon Ash and his rangie took out the competition, and in all fairness the disqualification of Roothy and Milo was kinda rigged, that starpicket was put into the truck AFTER the challenge ended, and was used as a way to get him home... i think he shoulda been awarded the points for the run instead of a DNF....

Yep i agree with you, i think the point system could have been alot better:eek:
On the hill climb round i think it was, ash crawled up then back down without any brakes (going by the brake lights), the jeep crawled up, but had to use the brakes a tad.
And milo, well, he had to have two goes at the bottam, spun wheels heaps, then on the way down he took off, using lots of brakes (maybe cause of the gearing compared to the rangie) and some how he won the round:eek: go figure, he might have been the quickest but thats only because he couldn't crawl up like Ash and he has alot higher gearing on the way down;)
Still i blanked out the rover/jeep jokes from roothy and just watched the rangie do everything without a prob:angel:
Well done Ash!!!!
P.S your isuzu is alot quieter than ours:D
just my 2cents worth.

IT WAS AN ABSOLUTE JOKE
it was like comparing apples with oranges. how can you compare a leaf sprung troopy with a new Jeep with a diesel powered cruiser axled RRC??? it just doesnt make sense and the points system was a disaster. it was obviouly done tongue in cheek and a waste of time as a serious comparison :(
that rangie is an awesome machine and I would have it in my driveway any day of the week but you cant take the 'off road challenge' seriously :p
oh, to answer your question...the RRC won hands down ...better flex, better traction, better ride, better looking, better fitted out, better off road, better everywhere

I haven't seen it yet, but it sounds like it was just meant to be some fun entertainment... a bit like when Top Gear tested a smart car with another smart car bolted to its roof. Just fun.

Totally Slunnie.
the points were only there to give them a reason to do the article in the first place.
As objective as i can be, the Rangie just cruised all the hard work. Milo exemplified why Landy's are so much better at the job, in the brutal way it had to tackle everything just to overcome the obstacle. The Jeep was great, but given that its 20 yrs younger and sitting on the shoulders of the likes of the RRC, it should be.
All in all, good fun.:)

G'day All,
Watched it yesterday arvo. Having read some of the comments here and on a similiar type thread....gotta say HTFU some of ya :p. It was a bit of fun for FFS, who cares if Roothy made some landy jokes....all makes copped a bit of stick back and forth.....anyone see the credits where Ash is putting Land Rover "Anything Else is Crap" stickers on Milo and the Jeep?
Also noting that despite being from different countries....after modifying etc....they all wore the Aussie flag? I think some folk get a little over sensitive about the whole thing, they all did well, though it was obvious that on the more difficult tracks that the coil sprung vehicles had the edge on the leaf sprung vehicle.
We get that sort of banter on an average trip out....and we ALL drive landies....RRC better than Fender versus shopping trolley Disco. On here we get on average every couple of days some thread having a dig at Toyota's or Nissans or some other make.....yet fall in a pool of tears if we hear someone having a go at our LR's......are we that precious? I'm not.....love my beast...know what it is capable of....and its proved itself time and time again. No banter or persons comment on another forum or out on a track is going to change that.
Regards
Stevo

Hi Stevo,
No doubt you read my comment on the other thread, but it was mostly directed at the way the comments were made, IE at most times only Roothy was miked up so his carry on got the air, not Terry or Ash's retorts, which if I could lip read would've been a hoot no doubt.
I'm not precious either as I, like you, no what the RR is capable of and can take ribbing well as it usually ends up with me towing/ recovering the ribbers later on:p.
I was just annoyed that the carry on about everything other than toyota got the most 'air time'.
I agree with everything you say, but having the 'banter' represented so one sided continually on these productions gets right under my skin.
Now....wheres my kleenex and cement powder??:D

it really was typical of the whole magazine really, lots of fancy pictures and video (well done Boxer ;)) but little in way of facts and information for the readers who actually want to know what and how things have been done.
For example, Ash's RRC, very very nice truck but no real technical info on it. Yeah its got cruiser axles after the nissan ones played up, but how about some info on how the mod was done, some pics of it at least and some more info on the diesel engine :(
back to the video, typical of the mag again, more advertising than you can poke a stick at with little information on how each car has been modified.
yeah, I know the video is all in fun but if I wanted a larf, I would watch funny home video's ;), I want the 'custom guide' to be that, full of facts, tips and info on the actual mods not the fancy flashy wheels and where the CB ariel is or how to wire up a set of spotties
I will be over soon JC for my dose of kleenex and cement powder :p

I'd send you boys some tissues....but my last major lot went down to Mick/Fusion :D. From where I sit, it boils down to expectations...I enjoy the dvd's......from a value perspective....a mag and dvd is bloody good value. Of course there is going to be advertising....thats a given.....how else is any magazine going to get off the ground. Roothy is always giving a nudge to landies....does it wear a bit thin at times...for sure. Does LR as a company help to change that perception...not really.
The D3 has come out and won awards all over the place and proven itself. Whereas I wouldnt touch a new Defender ( or that lamo name "Puma") with a 10 ft pole until its myriad of issues are sorted out. The average 4WD punter knows how well our beasts go off road...but also know it has a history in the past of unreliability...part of no doubt is urban myth created over time.
On previous dvd's where they show a specific vehicle....then you get to find out all the mechancial/ technical aspects. To expect that knowledge from that "shoot out" I think is expecting to much. Besides if you want to know that info....PM Ash :). Ultimately, I love anything 4WD/ Camping/ Great Outdoors.......if LR's weren't around....I'd be driving something else,

Had a look at the DVD today:) I was a bit of a send up as mentioned but what else do we expect from this lot. ;) Was good entertainment....
Did Ash put that sticker on Milo before he left? Looks like Roothy may have edited it with a pocket knife:o
Well done Ash if you see this post, the Rangie did well.

The voice over was totally lame, made me laugh actually.
The Rangie was all over the other two, never lost grib well almost never, the logs made him slip but probably due to the mud the others left.
My only gripe would be the Isuzu rumbling away, not a fan of them but did a great job.
Very nice rig indeed.

I watched it the other night - pure entertainment. And if you let the constant landy jokes get up your nose, you need to thicken your skin or stop watching them. It's pure entertainment. I find Roothy entertaining. Everything's said and done with tongue firmly planted in cheek, and I reckon Boxer will back me up on that. Well done Ash by the way.
As for the ads, I didn't think it was too bad, compared to the Fraser Island dvd a couple of years ago...that's when I stopped buying the mag...

Not a bad bit of entertainment I'd have to say.
Good to see the old Tojo struggling against the other two vehicles.
I reckon if it wasn't for the brand recognition that Milo has, he'd be getting rid of her. Every month something's breaking. Although, I think that it's good to show how to get yourself out of trouble in the real world. No matter what you think of it, it is displaying inginuity and lateral thinking to solve a problem.
I saw him plug a TC hole with a bit of wood and some epoxy once, the difference between driving home and being towed.
I reckon I'd pass on most of his cooking though:D
