A mate and I were chatting in the pub the other night about the differences of TD5 Defenders around the world. We soon got to Australia.
Two things we didnt know:-
1. Do Australian TD5's require a Catalytic Converter in the exhaust? In the UK all 2002 onwards front down pipes have a CAT in them (until we take them out again!!!)
2. Rest of World Spec Defenders destined for Africa have an oil cooler for the R380 gearbox mounted below the water radiator. Do the Australian Defenders?
Thanks

Jon,
Yes, we get the cats in Defenders 2002 onwards, 2A chassis prefix.
All Td5 Defenders AFAIK only have the pipe which goes from the trans oil cooler adapter towards the front of the engine and does a loop back again, no actual cooler as such here in Australia.

The tail pipe also comes out the back and looks daft.

Is the CAT needed / a requirement over there or do you remove them and replace with a straight through pipe to allow the engine to breathe better?

If the vehicle is factory fitted with a cat convertor it is technically illegal to remove it.
I have seen Disco and Defender TD5s that had them have the non convertor engine pipe fitted (genuine LR part, straight bolt in).
I think you would have to monumentally unlucky to get caught for it.

Technically the vehicle would be unregisterable.
If and when vehicle inspections involve an exhaust emissions test it would be found.
As I understand it the cat removes toxic substances from the exhaust.
The EGR that reduces the particulate from diesel exhaust can be removed as well.
It will improve the performance by a couple of kw.
But who cares about quality of our breathing air? :p

It's only a problem for the bloke behind! ;)

Interesting... Ive replaced mine with a straight through unit. No visible difference to exhaust gas / smoke. Defo makes the engine more responsive and more eager to spool the turbo up.
Our anual MOT test doesnt consider emisions on Diesel engines, only gas opacity - so in the UK we can remove them without problems.
