it is a good lens. I think the extra stop was worth it, possible to get some bokeh even at 16mm if you use f/2.8, noticeably more so than at f/4.

The 17-40 is just as good quality but can't quite do the DoF trick as well, but you get 5mm extra reach, and it's half the price.

Canon lenses with an L prefix are luxury lenses and have superior optics, even makes the nikon guys shed a tear.:p

So similar to Pentax DA* lenses? Sure 10% or even 30% but over 100% more expensive???

It's not just the optics. It's also build quality, including weatherproofing, plus they come with carry cases and hoods.

If you even pick up a Canon L lens and a non-L equivalent you'll immediately see, and feel the difference. L lenses typically carry their max aperture across the entire focal length too. They also have USM focusing. L lenses can be identified by a thin red ring.
