Me again!
im sure this subject has been brought up numerous times before but what are all your opinions on suspension lifts? i currently have around 2" lift lovel very heavy duty springs (measured against dads 300tdi standard land rover springs they are at least 5mm diameter thicker and im pretty sure that is what is making me cross axle more frequently and alowing hiluxes to be able to flog me offroad :o) running bilstiens on all corners which seem to be a very good shock but what i was wondering was how high can you go before big problems and hence lots of expense?;) i have been told 2" lift MD springs will be better for me but would 3" be too high and start to cause other problems?:( ?

oh and i dont want it to be a fully blown circus truck just more travel would be good:D

2" lift is enough, to get more trravel you can fit longer shocks and dislocation cones, the on road manners are then left OK, but offroad it will be improved out of sight!

Search here for long travel shocks, and Psimpson7 is manufacturing dislocation cones etc for sale to members.

Anything over 2" will wear uni etc much faster, anyway you can fit 35's with 2" lift:twisted:

Thats what they all say :wasntme:

When looking for Extra travel you will need longer shock mounts to prevent "Bottom out", Talk to Cal with the V8 county, that thing has HUGEeeeeee flex.

If you change the shock mounts to Pin instead out eye, this will give you a greater range of shocks and also better flex :).

Also what motor is your fender.

oh ok when you say cal do you mean cal415(Mick) yeah his beast is pretty eye catching but the amount of rubber he has (37's from wat i can remember) is almost that big i could drive under his diff lol
i have a 1994 200tdi defender 110 the pump has had a little thing done to it to make it go better (not screwed up)but the tyres i hav at the moment are smaller than standard wich might also be contributing to less off road performance?

A set of 255 85s or 285 75s with a decent tread pattern, should greatly improve you off-road ability, whilst keeping on road performance good:angel:

maybe all you need then is a set of softer springs....

Try shane at suspension stuff seems to be popular around here...

A 3" lift is fairly easy and inexpensive to attain, but would you want to? I have a 2" lift with Billies and Kings springs and am yet to cross axle or beaten anywhere by a Hilux. But we may be talking totally different 4wdriving environments and styles.
The big issue with the NCOP that is pretty much inforce is that your truck may be illegal without an engineering cetificate and some. I know that may not seem like a concern to you but it could lead to a red sticker defect and your insurance company not covering you. You could also face additional charges if in an incident.
I would take JC's advice to get more articulation.
But just beware, a lot has changed with vehicle mods and a lot more is about change shortly and the biggest issue with it is it is and the changes proposed are going to be retrospective. So the argument that it was legal when I fitted it Office will not be a consideration.
The implications of these codes of practice are yet to be fully realised.

Gday Matt,
Get some custom rate springs - Shane from suspension stuff can sort these out for you, not to heavy duty but long enough to acheive a 2-3in lift and soft enough to allow full tuck to the bump stop still. Then get some longer shocks, you dont need full dislocation if you dont want huge flex, you can retain the spring top and bottom and still get great flex with the right shocks. I would suggest doing the messurements on the maxium closed length shock that will fit the stock mounts, we setup a friends rangie on procomps with stock mounts and she gets the spring dropping a few inch out of the top seat if its not retained and can acheive full tuck. I dont remember the lengths though.

Procomp have a good assortment but dont ride as good as billies, otherwise there are some long travel billsteins out there but are way more expensive then the procomps.

I would say your stiff springs are limiting the up travel a fair bit, i run heavy springs in my county to prevent rubbing, the axles never come near the bump stops with them yours would be the same no doubt but without the extra drop! find somewhere to get it flexed up and stick your head under and check how far off the bump stops the axles are - take some pics if you can :)

and 255/85s are a great size for a slightly lifted defender, ive seen heaps running that size now and they go great offroad with the stock suspension. Another thing to consider is the hilux's probobly have LSDs in the rear...

Hey Mick

well i have been told about this shane fella a few times now so ill definately give him a call soon! as for how much they cost im not to worried unless they r rediculous prices  well i dont need as much flex as ur beast has but i would like a bit more than what i have got(without having to goto dislocation cones etc etc) well i got dad to take his 300tdi out there with the standard springs and it got as far as the hilux did and yeah ur right the hilux does has LSD:angel: anyways ill go and take some photos of it and you can see what you think is best for my sistuation :D
anyways ill talk to you later with some photos
