View Full Version : Got myself a Defender - here come the questions!

OK, so I bought the 96 Defender wagon I mentioned recently, and am quite proud of her!

Drove it home from Kurri Kurri to Brisbane today, and already have a few questions. Not sure whether I should add a separate post for each one or not, so for now I'll list some of them below:

* rear blinker lenses - where's the best place to get them to replace my faded ones?

* 'Jesus Bar' - has anyone fitted a grab handle inside above the passenger (or drivers doors)? These are found in many other breeds of vehicle and are good to hang on to when the going gets rough or to assist getting in.

* child restraint anchor points - anyone fitted any of these, and if so, how, where, who did it and how much?

* dash instrument lights - mine are pretty dim. Is there a way to adjust them or are they easy to replace?

That's it... for now!

Gotta sleep now so I can play with the Defender tomorrow :)

Hi Ranga (you'll have to change your user name now...)

I can help with one of you questions, the one about the grab handle. Have a look at this thread: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/technical-chatter/47026-installing-grab-rail-handle-defender.html

Get a genuine LR handle for about $20 (or one from a wrecker - even cheaper).

Anchor points depends on if it's a 110 or a 130.

Short answer is, 110 put in a crab bar, white bar that runs across the back of the second row seats an can fit three seats or there is a single anchor point that mounts in the floor for one seat.

There is no short answer for a 130, check out the posts here - http://www.aulro.com/afvb/good-oil/57559-child-restraint-anchor-points-defender-kiddie-seats-baby-seats.html?highlight=restraint

I picked up a full set on ebay for brand new for not very much.. ($30 or something for the set) A simple change that made a big improvement to the overall appearance :)

Were they a one-off for the seller, or were they a business? Any idea of the seller's name?

Jesus Bar, any wreckers, easy. but not above the drivers door if you are a bit tall.

child restraint anchor points, when you ar at the wreckers grab another seat belt , the steel plate that boults to the floor, add that to the existing ones then clip on to that.

dash instrument lights, maybe you dash is just full of dust, just pull it to bits an have a look.

Kim in SA said ? i think 23 each for a complete light ( ie not just the lens)

Thanks - I spotted them, but I have a 95 Defender and don't think these would fit. It seems the ones I need only come in a complete unit, not just the lense.

I'm going to try and get the same hand rail that is near the rear door from a Land Rover wrecker. Having them all look the same would be nice.

Not sure what you mean about the anchor point, though? I have an anchor point behind the rear seat in the centre, but think I need each one to be directly behind each seat.

You can get a lot of bits like indicator lenses from FWD motors at Moorooka (Yeerongpilly). Far cheaper than LR. Got my last busted indicator lens replaced for about $9 from memory.

They are easy enough to replace. I used LED's from bright lights in Fern Tree Gulley. They have a website Bright Lights Auto Parts - Welcome to the home of Bright Lights Auto Parts (http://www.brightlightautoparts.com/)

LED's are pretty bright which some don't like especially at night, although you could just replace the existing lights with the same type as they are cheaper also.

Replace the dash lights.
I went from 3 watt up to 5 watt makes a world of difference.
Supper cheap has the light bulbs you need $6.95 from memory.

For child seat anchor (crab bar) try a mob called "Seatwise" somewhere in Brisbane. They installed one in my Td5 110 back in 2002. They did a good job. It was powder coated grey to match the interior of the vehicle and looked like a factory thing.

Unfortunately it seems they no longer exist. The only number I could find for them now goes to another business. I rang Auto Extras and they want about $580 fitted, which seems a lot of money for a little bit of steel and fitting. Vanquip quoted about $450 - $500, but apparently can't get hold of the supplier for the bar.

Strangely, there is an anchor point already in the middle, but I was advised this would be probably OK, but defintiely illegal. Also, I wonder why I can't use the existing seatbelt mounts on the floor for an anchor point?

Quick update - Vanquip rang me back with an updated quote of about $850!! Obviously won't be going there...

Queensland RTA or whatever they're called should have a list of restraint installers on their website, or give them a call.

Don't know if this is the case in Queensland, but in NSW it is far cheaper to go to a RTA approved/appointed fitting station than it is to go somewhere else.

Other people have quoted crab bar and fitting as being more like $250, but that was a couple of years ago.

Check out the restraint thread in Good Oil that I posted a link to above, that mentions the names of several fitting places around Queensland that have fitted crab bars to Defenders before.
