View Full Version : Yikes! Cracked Windscreen (D3)

Bummer....looked up the other night and noticed some serious cracking in my windscreen. Seems originated from a stone impact in the tinted area behind therear view mirror. Then I went to the snow on Fri and Sat, and the temp was -3 and freezing. Seems that triggered off the crack from the weakened screen...

Anyone replaced a screen yet? Whats the damage????

Thanks for your input...!

Busted three of 'em. About $1,400 fitted if no rain sensor. Claimed under my normal comp insurance and paid $500 excess. I now have specific windscreen cover!
As yet, no cheaper aftermarket alternative....well as at about 6 months ago.

My advice is to always go for the extra windscreen cover. I know mine is a $50 excess and am allowed one per year. Windscreens with rain sensors are very expensive.

Windscreens with rain sensors are very expensive.

Windscreens WITHOUT rain sensors are EXPENSIVE as well (OEM - definitely)

Changed mine over a couple of months ago, $1900 genuine screen only available, but I was lucky we have one free screen a year with AAMI no excess.

I replaced the screen in my D3 in January this year for $242 through RACQ Autoglass.
No rain sensors, (its the S model) the plastic surround came out a little scratched but otherwise all good.

cheers.

Warrigal57,
Does the new glass have inbuilt UV filtration?

was this total replacement cost, or your insurance excess only, I've replaced two at $1,400 each less my $500 excess!!!! Mine is standard "S" variant.

What I mean is, I paid $500, being the insurance excess on a $1,400 approx replacement. Was told by insurance co & installer that there was no after market screen available in February 09.

The $242 was total replacement cost for the screen. I double checked my receipt (such a huge variance in cost!!). I don't know about the UV filtering - not something I thought of.

I just called to RACQ Glass to confirm the price and was quoted $376 including RACQ member discount, $470 for non members.

I didn't ask about UV filtering etc...the girl taking the call thought a LandRover Discovery was some type of Toyota!! LandRover needs to do some work on their brand awareness for the younger generation.

Sorry for the delay in responding but we've just returned from a trip through Innamincka/Strezlecki track/Lake Eyre/Flinders Ranges/Broken Hill. Great time and couldn't be happier with the car....except the washer bottle cracked again, and there were hardly any corrugations to talk of.

An odd variation in prices...

Had a screen with rain sensor ('09 SE) replaced recently $740 supplied and fitted (no insurance involved) by a local windscreen fitter and sourced from Land Rover.

cheers

Had a new windscreen fitted today. $440 fitted with the rain sensor presumably transferred. Windscreen is a PGI unit Fitted by Yass Windscreens and Glass, PGI list two types of windscreen, with and without a rain sensor patch. I will update how the rain sensor behaves.

Hi Def90,
We get aftermarket w/screens for some of our 2nd hand vehicles for RWC.
S&F cost is around $1000.00. This includes a new sensor as some that have been reused (other companies-National/O'brien's etc- that turn up to fit glass for insurance for customer's) eventually play up. (what we have seen anyay).
If u need to organise one give me a ring at MLR & we can book it in.

Cheers.

We have had no issues with the rain sensor after our replacement except that, for the first few days, it seemed a bit slow in activating. Since then it has worked fine. The screen was quoted as "with rain sensor"

I suspect that the PGI screens do not include a new sensor and rely on the installer swapping the old one over from the broken screen. Interestingly I was quoted $1700.00 supply only from the dealer which is why I went aftermarket.

Hi Pete,

I bought Def90's D3 and he had to replace the glass for the RWC. Organised through Lance Dixon (contractor). So far it works fine (rain sensors) have been ok, so hopefully new sensors were installed, but it was a neat job. If it goes again I will certainly get LR to do it. I use ULR so would probably do it thorugh them, but thanks for the info. My D2 I had to replace for RWC and was a bit of a botch job through RACV (National Widscreens).
Cheers Neil.

I saw the reference to UV filtering in an earlier post and a response as well, but I was not clear as to if some sort of heat filtering glass was yet available.

Here in Canada, we use the term Low E which refers to Low Emissivity, a characteristic of the glass that does not allow heat to transfer thru, or at least reduces the heat transfer without reducing the light transfer.

For heat rejection, this means the glass has Infra Red rejection characteristics, and this is not quite the same as Ultra Violet rejection, nor is it any form of tinting.

GM, Ford and Chrysler routinely install Low E windscreens, side, and rear glass in most all their domestic vehicles here as that allows them to install smaller air conditioners and hence improve upon their respective CAFE, (Corporate Average Fuel Economy), ratings.

It seems however that none of the EU manfacturers install or even make available Low E glass for their vehicles, (the sun never shines in Europe, I think), or even for their vehicles shipped to North America. Land Rover does option Low Sound glass, (the little ear symbol), but that is about all I have ever seen.

As such, I wondered if Low E glass was available in Australia - somehow I think not with Land Rover, but maybe with Holden and Ford?
