Hiya,
I'm looking at buying an Icom IC-440 which comes bundled with a Uniden antenna. See here...
Icom IC-440 UHF Radio 6db Antenna Package [IC-440/AT] - $459.80 : Prestigecom.net.au Best Prices on UHF CB Radio, GPS Navigation and Communications, Express delivery Australia wide (http://www.prestigecom.net.au/index.php'main_page=product_info&cPath=31&products_id=1603)
Another mob tell me that the antenna offered is crap and is in fact a freebie from Uniden. Of course they want another $107 for their recommended antenna, being a GME AE4018K1.
Any and all advice welcome from anyone in the know:D

Well... it is a ground independent antenna which is good. Normally sells for around $40 to $50 - obviously depends where you go.
So looks good to me.
If you are worried, do a search for UHF CB antennas and look for 6dB ground independent ones and compare prices.

Mark.
You don't want the 6db one. Go for a 4.5 or lower. For your type of need and usual terrain, this will be much more usefull with better reception. I have a 6db and 4.5db, and the 6db hardly ever gets used.

It'll get you on air and probably work OK, but looks a little light in construction.
We get good results, both performance wise and mechnically, from the elevated feed type. ( Polar, RFI or GME are some brands). These are the ones with the big spring at the base and the long chrome tube. They are typically around the $100 - $120 mark.
If you can get $50 off with radio only, take it and and invest an extra $50 in an elevated feed one.

I bought this (http://www.prestigecom.net.au/index.php'main_page=product_info&cPath=322&products_id=56) from prestige along with the 440pro.
very happy with it so far although i haven't used the 3dB whip yet.

I bought the same UHF as you (excellent) and was going to go with the package deal, but paid the extra bucks and bought a better antenna...worth it I reckon.

Can you give some details on how you are setting up the icom.
Where are you mounting it in the cabin and where are you drawing power from
thx,
Brian

Brian, I've installed the IC-440 today. Keep a look out for a dedicated thread.

Thanks for the link, just bought a 440 with antenna. Can't go wrong with those prices:o
I have a perfectly good 3 year old (big) Uniden in the RR, but the 110's 'dash' has very little room so the remote unit is the only one IMHO.

I think you are talking about HF antennae.
