My alleged '66 IIa has 143000968 on the rear spring hanger. That would make it a 1960 series II would it not?

If thats the right numbers then yeah, both Clifton and Classic VIN calculators say 1960 Series II
From Classic:
Chassis / VIN number : 143000968
Land Rover
Land Rover series 2 88"
Model 143 Series 2 88"
Body style Basic
Engine type 2.25l (2286cc) petrol
Market, Steering (3) CKD (Export), RHD
Model year 0 1960
Serial Number 00968 Number 968 of 1671 numbered from 1 to 1671
If you have engine, axle and gearbox numbers, Classic might offer more info:
Classic Land Rovers (http://www.classiclandrovers.no/?page=documents/vinlookup&PHPSESSID=d4a35828d7b54ff81f44cbb3942a2cfc)

The good thing about Series II (not IIa) chassis numbers is that the fourth number corresponds with the year.
1438XXXXX = 1958
1439XXXXX = 1959
1430XXXXX = 1960
1431XXXXX = 1961
With the 2a they went to suffixes which are less readily decoded. :(

I'd think that every owner since about 1970 has been led to believe it to be a later model than it is.
