Well we have finally managed to sell the house :). So, we intend tyo come over to OZ in September or October of this year. We plan on moving to the Brisbane area. At the moment we have 2 90's (1997 and 1987). The 1987 is retro fitted with a 300Tdi engine. Is it worth me bringing them both over (given the cost involved)? It would cost about $5000 to import the vehicle (including shipping etc).
Anyone got any contacts in the rental market ? We intend to rent for at least 6 months before buying a place.
TIA

Sorry I should have been a bit clearer. I will definitely be bringing the 1997 one over. Just wondered if it would be worth me bringing the older one over as well.

Bloody Mexicans! :p The real problem with the Caboolture area is that some of the inhabitants lack a sense of humor :p :wasntme:
PS - Ivan, we Queenslanders call "immigrants" from the southern states "Mexicans" - but we all love each other really. (except at origin time)

G'day Ivan :)
It would definately be worthwhile to bring both of your 90's over to Australia, as they were only sold here for about 23 months a couple of years ago, they are a VERY desireable vehicle in this country :) as to your moving to Queensland, what line of work are you wishing to follow?? and do you wish to settle in S.E. Qld (that is within 60 miles of greater Brisbane?) city, semi rural, coastal, as it will all have a bearing on what area to look into, it might be worth you while to get a detailed map of SE Qld and make an area to investagate, somebody from here could possibly mail a SE Qld map over to you ;) then with a chosen area, the rental rates and availability can be followed up.
BRING YOUR 90'S WITH YOU :D

Good move Ivan, I've been here 4 years now and don't miss the uk at all, only friends and family :D It's a great place to be, especially for kids to grow up.
There is definately a shortage of landrover 90's, so if it's in good condition bring it out.
Have a look at www.koalaconnection.com.au + Holiday Homes Australia - Aussie Holiday Homes (http://www.aussieholidayhomes.com) a friend of mine also runs pomsdownunder.com - The migrants guide to emigrating to and settling in Australia (http://www.pomsdownunder.com) he'll answer any queries you may have, a very helpful chap ;)
On another note, would you have room to squeeze one of those "landrover dormobile elevating roofs" into one of your containers ??? :)

In reply to the above, I am an Oracle DBA/Developer so I suspect most work will be based in the CBD. I would be happy to live anywhere that is in commuting distance. At the moment I travel 1.5 hours to work (50 miles), so anything less is going to be a bonus.
I spoke to the wife last night and mentioned the comments on here. She has agreed with that we will bring both 90's over. My 90 (1987) needs painting and a bit of work to make it look better but, it will give me something to do and keep me out of trouble.

I am a southerner myself and am moving back to Australia;) upon retirement (soon). It has been a good place to live, but we are looking for a lifestyle (weather) change for our later years.
Good luck with the move and a SE Qld AULRO get together will be on the cards after you arrive.

Hang on we only know one part of the story here! If you can get good money for the 90's in the UK then I would consider leaving them there, and particularly the older one. If you could say get the equivalent of $10k Aus over there... you'd have to think about it. Landed it would owe you $15k which gets a fair bit of LR here.

Bring over your 90's
I did and just regret i did not bring over both of mine that i had in the Uk.
But throw a soft top kit in the back of one of the 90s before you come over. Belive me you will use it over here. My 90 has the back rolled up all year round and the roof off for 6 months of the year .And belive me car crime is no where near what it is in the Uk
Here is my 1995 300 Tdi 90 that i bought over here 3.5 years ago

Check out carsales.com.au it will give you an idea of the price of cars over here, they are very expensive.
You might want to think about getting a higher value car and bringing it with you (makes the cost of shipping worth while), something like a P38a HSE or P38a DS.
Check out the cost of a shipping container to put the cars and lots of other stuff into. I was looking at getting a tractor shipped over in a container and it was a lot less than 5 000 pounds.
All the best with the move.

Check out Oceansky at International Furniture Removals / Moving Overseas / OceanSky (http://www.oceansky.com.au/)
About AUS$8,000 for the sole use of a 20' container door to door, and then check out
A Letton Percival & Co Ltd (http://www.lettonpercival.co.uk)
for insurance about 1.6% value of container - cheaper than the shipping companies.:)

If you haven't owned it for 12 months (or is it 24 months?), you can't do this....

agreed its 12 months and why would you want to bring a peacie crap like a P38 with you . Best left behind more hassle than they are worth
Cost me $5000 for a 20' container from Southampton to Brisbane Door to door . The car was in there with our furniture and the rest of our crap . The insurance for the whole container was another $3000 . The car cost us $1400 import duty and GST . And $450 for cleaning . Then $275 for compliance plate and inspecion.
That was pretty much it but that was Nov 2005

Yes you can, you just have to pay GST on it's landed value if you have owned it for less than 12 months.

mm even if you have owned it for more than 12 months you still have to pay GST on the landed Value. We had owned our 90 for 5 years before it came here still had to pay GST on the Value of the car
Still does not mean you can import a car which you have not owned or lived with for less than 12 months
