Alright, its finally time for me to ease my sphincter a little:eek: I going to buy a new laptop, essentially all I do, is browse the web and some pictures pretty basic, the only reason I'm going to junk my Thinkpad, is it gets hot ans shuts down, if on your lap and the ambient temp is over mid twenties:mad: Oh and something else is a bit humped as I gave it a new battery, but still only has a run time of half an hour if removed from charge

Was thinking an apple? mate has a desktop, starts quick and has no drama's, I like this effort free idea:D

So what do I buy?, bigger screen would be cool and must have a slot thingo for my wireless net:)

And where do I buy?

I've got a 17 inch macbook pro that i bought through Inc. Fantastic bit of kit and one that gets used constantly. Runs way faster than our PC.

Try vacuuming the vents on the Thinkpad, or pull it apart and replace the busted fan.

Thinkpad maintenance manuals are free and very good, part should be reasonably cheap on ebay, take about an hour, hour and a half tops.

If your wireless net is usb then you should be all good, if it's a pcmcia/cardbus/expresscard type though you might be out of luck on the macbook as i don't think they have a slot.

The fan pushes plenty of air, but runs alot and when its on your lap, the venting for it is covered

We bought an Imac from here, saved a few dollars and got a brilliant machine.

I am travelling with my 13" MacBookPro, it is brilliant. I can get anything up to 7 days of battery life (using it about an hour a day with bluetooth turned on). The only negative I have found is the reflective screen can be like a mirror in sunlight. Also the size is perfect for travelling.

Hi,

I've had the 13" 160 gig black one for 18 months now. Just great. Totally reliable.

Came loaded with nearly everything. You might want to consider Office for Mac, but you'd only need the student vers.

Current equivalent with ali case is $1899. What they can do with an iPhone is amazing.

cheers, DL

Yep, has Airport built in. Picks up networks all over the place when out and about.

At home I use Airport Extreme which is good for over 100m, haven't tried to see what the full range is.

The newer Airport Extremes have a 1tb hard drive built in that Time Machine can use as a back up automatically. Time Machine is a spin out the first time you use it and it comes loaded on Macbooks as well.

cheers, DL

Firstly, if your pc is running hot check that it doesn't have a process that has gone crazy in task manager. Maybe you've somehow scored something undesireable (like a virus checker) :o

Anyway, I'm confused. When you say your wireless thingy, do you mean a 3g modem, or just a wireless receiver. All the macs have built in wireless so you can throw away your wifi card.

If it's a 3g wireless modem then check but most of them should have mac drivers. These days.

The aluminium macbooks are great. They have just dropped the prices on them and they represent reasonable value (for what they are) at the moment.

All your PC problems will disappear. :D Don't listen to anyone on here telling you not to buy one unless they have used one recently for a reasonable period of time. (flame suit on) People that haven't used them are often critical but 95% of people that use one really like them. (the 5% is for Drivesafe).

To give you an idea, all the pc support people I know that have macs themselves freely admit that if their companies adopted them they would be out of work. :o

Who is the 3g with? I'm sure at least Optus and Telstra support macs. I'm sure the others would as well...if they want to sell the iphone.

If the computer is cooking then it does sound like some kind of cooling failure which means a fan or blocked vent (as mentioned). It probably can be fixed.. but at what cost?

Now you all know how much I love Apple :p However it should be said that like all manufacturers they have HW faults from time to time and laptops are expensive to fix. I would suggest you buy apple care (extended warranty) with your laptop (or any laptop for that matter). As a bonus, if you buy Applecare you get really good unlimited phone support where you talk to real Australians. :)

It is very pricey but can usually be bought from Ebay much cheaper so that may be worth a try.

If your IBM has not enough RAM it will use the HDD all the time for swap memory and it would get hot and the battery would not last long.

Just a thought.
