Hey Guys was just wondering if anyone could put me in the right direction of where and possible how much a rebuilt 300tdi would cost for a 97 defender. Or how much it would cost to do a rebuild.

Cheers

Hi Lovell;

What needs to be rebuilt ? Do you know if it require new Pistons , rings , etc , what's the condition of the heads like ? will your be getting your Pump rebuilt at the same time ? the figures of around $7-8 comes to mind , how much of the work can you do yourself ?

It probly doesnt need a full rebuild but i dont know the history of the motor as well. The problem is its got a pretty major oil leak, i think its coming out of the rear main so i thought if im going to pull the engine out i could freshen the hole motor up at the same time.

Where are you located ? an oil leak at the rear of the engine could be a few possibilities, Have you been told it is definately a rear main leak and is it due to excessive crankcase pressures etc?

We need more info to help.

BTW, a full rebuild including new head etc should be in the region of $8.5k to $9k drive in drive out.

unless you can do most of the gig yourself whereas you can make a substantial saving, even if you purchase a recon unit from the u.k. it will come out far cheaper than 9k, you should be able to get a unit for around 1500 quid so around 3k au plus shipping(again if you stick it in yourself).
If you just want to 'freshen up' the upper/ lower block that could be done also using the same company, when you have a clear idea of what you desire give me a shout and i'll give you contact details regards andy

Hi guys thanks for the replys. I've had a better look at it today with my old man and we dont think its the rear main. It seams to be coming from the drives side of the engine but not sure where from yet. We have degreased it so will have a look tomorrow to see if we have any leaks.

Thanks lardy ill keep that in mine.

I hope this helps yous out. cheers for the help guys

That's a great result but it seems Lovell_86 has a confirmed case of LPS (Landrover Pessimism Syndrome).

Early symptoms are driving along when hearing or feeling or imagining something different and turning to your passenger and asking desperately "What was that??!!"

"Hey Guys was just wondering if anyone could put me in the right direction of where and possible how much a rebuilt 300tdi would cost for a 97 defender. Or how much it would cost to do a rebuild."

There is a cure for LPS but some have found buying a V12 Jaguar while not curing LPS at least gives you something else to worry about.

sorry to bring up an old thread, but could someone reccomend a place either in aus or the UK (that ships intl) for a reco 300tdi bare engine?

I have a 95 disco thats done the head, while i could just replace the head, at 280k its probably getting near rebuild time.

Thanks,
Jeff

Best option is to just keep chipping away at the leaks like you have done. If its running fine other than a good service and possible timing belt it should be sweet. Just had an injector pump re-sealed and calibrated, I took it off and put it back on $502.00 all up. The quoted price for drive in and out $900 +or - depending on what was required. ( just for your info):D
