 Not what you think ;)
We decided to give the Rangie a bit of lovin' this morning and treat it to a decent detail, including a wax. So I headed off to Supercreep and faced up to the car care product shelves to get some wax. Usually, I buy a "standard" wax product (ie Repo/Turtle) around the $8 mark. This time, in a weak moment, I purchased are more expensive ($20) product - Turtle Platinum Series High Gloss Wax Paste (I never buy the liquid ones). The result on the Rangie was amazing with the brilliant shiny finish :):). After this I'll never go back to the cheaper stuff. So what does everyone else use?

I used to use the el-cheapo stuff when I 'cared' for paintwork but the rigours of hardcore 4WDing have seen me throw this idea out the window. if I waxed the dunga, I wouldn't have any paint left

I find older Rangies have better duco anyway, later models tend to fade more.

Yep agree the earlier paint was much more durable, but also prone to oxidation a bit over time.

Get a pickie up next weekend when it comes back from Rovercare. It's going in for a new gearbox tomorrow (and other stuff) :), and I'll get it back on Friday. I can tell you though, I could almost see my reflection in the paintwork - I swear I looked 10 years younger and 5kg lighter - but then everyone looks good with a Rangie :)

I use meguires. It's quite good. As far as shine goes, I think it all depends on the colour. Light colours don't really reward a lot of work. Dark colours really show give you a result if you put the work in.

As for paint protection I think the most important thing is keeping the paint clean. Modern water based 2 pacs are quite soft and bird poop with mark them in no time. If you see a poop you get it off there and then because the paint may not be there by the weekend. I'm not convinced that waxing makes any difference. :(

Hi,

5 coats of clear that can be cut back with Repo extra cut when the scratches get too much and all is good. :)

cheers, DL

It's a catch 22, older models had a more durable paint thanks to the lead but it was not good for the health of the panel beater or any of their neighbours if they had a breeze and an open shed. If you get the paint redone and want a similar quality not the factory cheaper shades it will cost you.

Likewise...

Especially the last part. I have built it up over a period of time, and now just replace the products on a "as needed" basis.

Bought most of it when I had the last car (black XR6 Turbo). That was, until I saw the light...

Loving black cars means that you have to be prepared for either a lot of time cleaning, or putting up with the dirt showing. I do both...

Yep, scored a couple of tins of the original paint - dated late 70's early 80's. Been told since thay have been unopened it will 99% that they are good. But, (always a but :( ) it will cost a bit to have someone do the job 'cos of the type of paint.

My Disco gets a nice thick waxing every few months, since it currently lives outside and I want to keep the original paint looking vaguely similar to the bits which were repainted after a hailstorm a few years ago.

I think I'd be too wimpy to get waxed - I'd run away crying. :( :lol2:

A bit like shaving your legs, which doesn't seem to worry the guy in the RaboPlus ad showing during the Tour De France. :(

I bought a bottle of waterless wash from Autobarn and tried it on the camper. Worked alright but I still prefer to use water.
