Hi,
I was at the dealer Sydney North Shore, Artarmon. The new defender MY09, there was going to cost 60k with all on road costs. When I got home I checked various online sites mention a price of new one being just under 50k. The Range Rover web site does not list prices anymore due to some govt regulation.
Do various additional charges (govt, dealer delivery etc.) add up to over 10k?
What are people paying for a new defender without any options these days but including aforementioned charges?
Thanks
Mark

Sounds over the top. I got quoted $51,000 inc GST and on road costs at the end of last month. I think the list price is $48,000 + on roads.

I thought the SVX was only $60-65k.
I would ring a few dealers, probablly all as there are not many dealers left.
As much as I would like a new one, there is no back up and it is easier to get a BMW sedan repaired in the country than a LR.

They were looking to pay the bills with you I think! Try somewhere else - or even try one of those brokers. They often get good deals.

I was at the same dealer last week and with a few options it hit nearly sixty grand, I looked at how much they wanted for a bull bar etc and decided I didn't want their one that much. Without options it was $54,505. Another dealer in southern Sydney over the phone quoted $54,500.
I think the on road costs must vary from state to state.

our 07 was 56 on road.......I believe the SVX's were around 72ish I could stand corrected on that though.
as for the metallic paint I dont think you can get it in Matt......perhaps with the newer models but when we brought there wasn't an option.

My 110 DC is 54,500 on the road, that includes Met/Paint, Front Mudflaps, front and rear mats and LR snorkle, but once the bull bars on, lamps, front and rear light guards, winch, rear step bar, rear kaymar wheel carrier, uhf, side steps, metal rear cargo protection cover, add another 5k, then theres the roof rack, another 3k. So Defenders are not cheap, ups forgot the twin battery set up too. I think its something that you really have to want and are prepaired to keep for along time..

Hello again,
Thanks for the responses so far.
Is it worth while considering a purchase from interstate, new or ex-demo defender? I am in Sydney, looking at ads of VIC dealers, prices there seem to be better there [OR is it because I am looking from so far away :)]. Would it be hard to transfer the rego to NSW plates? How would the warranty and service work? Don't want to drive back for every service.
Would I be successful haggling Sydney dealers to VIC prices, there is not many of them here.
Has anyone is Sydney used a car-broker, recently if so which-one?

5K for those accessories sound cheap but 3k for a Roof Rack? Is it made of gold? :D
And the re-sale value on the Defenders holds up better than most other vehicles if looked after so hanging on to them for a long time is a personal decision rather than financial.

I bought my Defender SVX from interstate (albeit just over the border in Albury! I live in Melbourne.) I looked at this specific model and negotiated with 2 Dealers in QLD (in person), 1 in VIC (in person), 1 in NSW (in person), and the one in Albury (only over the phone!). You should only look at the advertised prices as a guide as they will rarely be the prices paid. My thought have always been that cars in general are cheaper in NSW due to the volume and I have often seen ex NSW owned cars transported to various states seemingly to gain a higher price but this is just IMHO.
Transfer is easy for rego, warranty and servive work can be done at any dealer - I have done it. Your success at haggling Sydney dealers depends on the time of the month and various factors including how good of a negotiator you are.
And regarding a car broker, depends on your time and again, how well you can negotiate.
With my last purchase, I negotiated a better price with free accessories over the phone with the dealer I purchased from, than with the dealers i visited in person.
The key is to say that you are "ready to buy now". This is what i told the dealer over the phone. Those words turn you from a tyre kicker with not much of a discount to a qualified buyer that they do mot want to lose.
Discounts also apply to how much interest thay have vs how much stock they have and how long they have been paying fnance on it.

The Racks a Patriot, from the Uk. that includes twin rear ladders. The Hannibal one i have Now was about 2700 i think, plus 300 for the ladder, pricey but but most things are that are well made.

Hi , go to carpoint + carsales + drive +carsguide and do a search on lr, defender you will find several 08, demo, unsold models in NSW dealerships from 48-60.
Used cars in Australia - Find cars for sale in Australia - CarPoint Australia (http://ninemsn.carpoint.com.au/used-cars/search.aspx?N=279) 4294966725 4294966344 80 1426
Land Rover Defender, NSW - ALL used vehicles at www.drive.com.au (http://www.drive.com.au/Search/SearchResults.aspx'm=LAND+ROVER%7cDEFENDER%7c&l=32&bc=db6c924924&from=22&nv=1)

I think the new law required all cars to be advertised at drive away prices and as that varies state to state made it impossible for them to put prices on their web sites. Also remember any extras you fit at the dealership like bars, roof racks etc get charged the extra tax on cars, you may be better off asking dealer if you can buy the extras elsewhere if heaps cheaper and get the dealer to agree to fit them for free.

Some people don't roll out of bed in the morning for a price less than $60K.

I think Land Rover Defender needs to be one of these cars that can only be ordered on line because at least in my experience, the dealers seem to have lacked any kind of interest to sell me one.

LR dealers seem [in general] to lack enthusiasm to do a deal.... when it comes to the Deefer.

FWIW, I ain't paying a premium to keep the lights on or the rents paid for dealers. They already get this from the Rangie purchasers.

THis topic has been covered elsewhere, but if Land Rover only knew how bad some of the dealerships viewed the Deefer [and I am not making this remark in reference to anyone mentioned in this thread, necessarily], it would be in its best interests to set up some other kind of selling channel. Perhaps internet.

Buy a second hand one ...

I get out of the bed for lot less than that, .... or more, depending what you meant by 60k. Anyway.....
Reading forums here, some say the Defender is sold at mainly around RRP price plus few extras thrown in for free. (I don't believe in FREE things.) Others say they got a very good price.
Some are good at haggling some are not.
I also realize drive away advertised prices are just guide.
So what sort of dollar amounts did people here achieved to haggle down to?
Say for example on a vehicle like this. DEFENDER 110 7 SEATER advertized for $52,288

The dealer ships are weird. I walked into one dealership with no one in the show room, and had to wait for a sales man. As soon as i asked if there were any traded defenders he lost what little interest he had...
That same afternoon i went to the other dealership to find the salesman very helpful and with lots of cars to test drive. even offered to put one on the hoist to look at.. such a big change in attiude between dealerships.. While i didn't end up buy one of there defenders.. While i was there he even let me drive the new defender...
i ended up buying my defender from a private sale
Now im thinking of upgrading i know which dealership i will be going back too...

You already have a 08 defender wagon ex demo for 49k drive away and a 130 crew cab 08 demo dropped from 54k-52k in nsw Used cars in Australia - Find cars for sale in Australia - CarPoint Australia (http://ninemsn.carpoint.com.au/used-cars/search.aspx?N=279) 4294966725 4294966344 80 1426

In most new cars there is at least a 10% margin off profit( so $5k on a normal defender) with any extras such as bars(+50%), mats(+100%), tint(+100% or more),fabric/ paint protection, fish oil etc carrying a much higher mark up again. The old dealer delivery charge that has been rolled into the drive away price was the best as when i used to work for a dealership it cost us $150 but we charged $500:o(350 profit). That included actual cost of getting car to the yard and washing/ detailing. The transport was charged at a flat rate so if the dealership was next door to the factory/port it was charged the same as the dealer in cairns. That was almost 20 years ago and up until the new laws some dealers where charging $1000-$2500 delivery! WHAT A RIP OFF.
It comes down to how willing the salesman is to negotiate( remember that most get paid a % on profit/sale) and how hard YOU can bargain. If you can see the sales board/chart in the sales managers office before going for a test drive and see when it starts/ finishes and try to get the salesman with the least sales at the end off the cycle.(most do monthly but others do from the 15th-15th to throw end of month bargain hunters out)

Probably slightly off topic, is it possible to order the new 130 with the traction control pack? I'm aware that the new 110 can be optioned with either the TC/ABS package or upgrade GVM.

What I meant by that comment is that Deelers don't wanna do any deals for a car of the deefer's price point... there is prolly more margin to be made from selling a Rangie or something...

Yes, I too have to get outa bed for less than that....
