Ok, so i'm looking at a rough Series 1 disco. can't remember the year, might have been a 1992. Anyway, 2 door, 200TDI.

The price is low, but the condition isn't the best. There are a couple of major issues that i've been made aware of with it, and I thought i'd get an idea from those that know what costs may be involved with rectifying them.

Ok, first the minor one. Headlight problem, sounds like the low beams aren't working properly, something to do with the indicators by the sounds of it. Sounds like it might be a sometimes problem. Most likely a simple electronic issue (loose wire etc), so I should be able to do that myself. But any suggestions of common problems wo9uld be helpful.

Do taxride do an upgrade kit for the 3 door disco (MA the early model?). I understand the small headlights aren't the best. that may be a simple way to bump up the power, and get a relay in for some spotties mmaybe?

ok, crack in the windscreen. Bottom LHS when in the car. i've not seen it lately, but if it was a windcreen replacement, how many $$ ??

last one is a power steering issue. he doesn't know exactly what is wrong with it, but it doesn't work. apparently he has been quoted over $1000 to fix (or parts). is it the same as range rover parts? I find that hard to believe price wise, but if I can find out what parts, that's a head start.

I'll probably get it anyway despite the roughnes, because the price at $2500-3000 would be worth it. new tyres and some other major work has been done on it lately as well. Just have to sell the ambulance to fund it, and keep SWMBO happy ;)

Yep had that one and helped someone else who fixed it the same way on here. Simply a wire broken off the stalk, resolder it and she'll be fine.

Good luck with the rest of it if you decide to go for it.

I dont know about the windscreen as mine was replaced under my insurance but the rubber seal around the windscreen needed replacing and that alone was $250 and insurance wouldn't cover it:rulez: until the end of a 45 minute phone call.:rocket:.

The power steering could well be the infamous pump,,
built to leak in nearly all Land Rovers since the first RR.

I can see why he has been quote over a 1000 dollars as the pump itself is not cheap and then you need to add labour costs to it

Headlights-we have had troubles with our headlights (92 200tdi), after alot of stuffing around it turned out to be a plug up near the passenger side firewall, had a bit of dirt in it so gave it a spray and away it went:angel:
Also have had a hell of a lot of troubles with power steering ( i won't go there:twisted:) the pump finaly seized after we drove it for ages when it was whining it's head off, therefor had no power steering, after alot of hassle we got hold of a new pump for around $450 i think and that solved the problem.
They are the excact same pump as a RRC;)
Another thing that has given plenty of problems is the clutch hydrolic system, they seem to leak no matter what, but i think we have it sorted now with a 300tdi master cylinder in it;)

Richard,

If the windscreen is like a RRC with a rubber seal all round and no dress moulds around it, expect $180 ish.

If it is later Disco, sealed in urethane and interlocking dress moulds, get the mould assemblies from Alan Howard, and the screen is about $170. Mould costs I can't remember, but they're not cheap - $300 ish for the set.

Pray for the first option!

$2500-3000 isn't that cheap if it needs a lot of work - I sold mine on EBay for $4K and it was in great nick...

Thats what I thought.
Buy a 300tdi at least and get a good one not a dog.
For that money spend a tad more and get a good one.

I paid 6k for mine with 200k and full service history (or so I thought)

Power steer is a prob on the 200 series but a 1000 bucks to fix sounds steep.

There a great engine if looked after just make sure you stick a late model r380 behind it and you'll be fine

Ok, some good info here. So if it's an early disco I could possibly do the windscreen myself for minimal cost, or at least gets the parts at minimal cost.

so the RRC power stering pump is the same eh, good, my brother has one :D

I like the idea of the early one without swaybars, but i've not looked under this one yet.

Disco's are thn on teh ground here, especially deisels. And when the do come up they get a bit expensive.

Tassiecars is a car selling website for tassie, gets a lot of vehicles on it.
Auto and Car Sales Site | Search Used Cars for Sale Tasmania, Launceston, Hobart, Devonport, Burnie | Tassie Cars (http://www.tassiecars.com.au/srchres.jsp'dlr=-1&veh=-1&make=88&model=-1&minpr=-1&maxpr=-1&x=77&y=13)

have a look at the red 93 tdi. they want $8k, dreaming!

Ths one does have a bull bar, and I know I could do better on the mainland maybe, but i'll look at more options when I've sold the ambulance, but this is one option that is waiting for me for now (for the moment anyway).

I know it has had a lot done to it recently like new altenator, tyres, and some work done on the clutch and gearbox. but again, when I get some money to do some negotiations, i'll look into it a bit closer ;)

Thanks to all of you for your input and help sop far :D

the red one isn't the one that i'm looking at, mroe a comparison of local price. the one i'm looking at is blue, and as he is a family friend, a known and honest history since they got it. Bull bar as well :D

Although JC is at the other end of the state i'm sure i'll get him to cast his eyes over it one day anyway ;)

G'day Phoenix :)

A 200 TDI, just check if it has /had ANY overheating problems, as the 200/300 head will crack if overheated, the 200 head is starting to get hard to get now, even in UK, also check for any signs of rust around the rear alpine lights,(roof windows)and the rear boot floor as if the aplines leak the water soaks to the rear floor and sits, from memory the RRC and Ser 1 disco windscreens are interchangeable, and possibly the rubbers on early 3 doors, I would look at vehicles on the mainland or in the markets, and for the price of a Jetstar/Virgin and a boat ride you may just score a good 3 door or early 5 door for similar money;) I know of a 96 V8 3.9 auto, mid range spec that went for $2800 rwc, regoed an all, and for $2.5/3000 you could gas it :D
