Had the chance today to go and have alook and drive of the new Defender Range. Only 3 types were there, a 110 HCPU, 110 van and a 110 Double cab.
The 130's have not yet arrived in Oz, ( LR Quote ).
I had a drive of the Double cab, on grass, mud, up hills down hills, bit of water, and a sprint over a field, all very nice, much like the 110 SW i drove a few weeks ago, however the 110 DC looked very nice, i did not get to drive the other 2. But the 110 HCPU was the base model and in some yucky green.
I mentioned the 90, and the LR man said LR uk are working on a solution to get the weight up so it can be ADR here, signs are its not too far off, I also asked about the Defenders being banned as per another post on here in 2 years due to new ADR rules, again he said that was not true....
And Mr LR also said ARB have just bought a 110 Dc, to kit out in there lovely toys....

what are the seating arangements in the 110 van, does it have inward facing bench seats?

No, nothing in the back just load space, the tie downs, from the UK seat version are there, but thats it, looked ok, very shiny in the back, and very slippy, would need a load liner...

G'day Folks :)
I saw those vehicles in Ann st The Valley about 2 weeks ago and I thought that there was a 130 with them? nice to see the 2 door Windowed Hardtop back in the lineup :) would only be a 2 or 3 seater I think, like the HCPU body.
Weight problems with the 90  is it so light that it out-performs the Oriental Vehicles so they have to load it up like the neddies
cheers

Hopefully if they do make it heavier the weight will be easily removable. A couple of lead plates on the rear floor perhaps. Buy it, drive it home and remove lead plates and you right. Just like they do with road registered trailbikes throttle stops.

Great minds think alike, The wife said the same what a awful looking canopy.
Exmoor trim make a very nice black one, but i reckon you could get one done here as cheap, as for the hood sticks, they looked alittle frail, compaired to mine that are 100mm dia....
Is that canopy coming as standard with the 110DC?
It's right 'orrible that is :( Black would look far better

I drove the single cab HCPU today and ho har had his knees jammed against the dash in the wagon....it still has the bulkhead in:( the duel cab would have been better for him....ZD 534 & Mrs ZD had that one...saw lot of AULRO people there:D
good to drive through all the mud:angel:
the car trailer was a bit diffucult to park though;)

Must admit the canopy on the dualcab looks better in the flesh than the pics above ;)
I had my drive of the 110 HCPU (bit tight on room those singlecabs)... then hijacked the 110 DC for a spin to see what a real factory 110 DC feels like (much better being able to put the seat back).
Haven't driven a Defender3 before but must admit quite a nice engine that puma... oh and the anti-stall is brilliant on them... oh and hooning along in 6th gear low-range :D:D:D Seats still same comfort level which is good, rear seats are a bit hard and upright though, glad i don't sit back there

Why would the ADRs disqualify the 90 for being too light? Seems a bit stupid when everyone is trying to reduce weight to cut fuel consumption.
Did one of those LRs have BFG ATs on it or are my eyes failing me?

IIRC, it's too light for it not to have airbags. They would either need to put airbags in it, or make it heavier... I think!?

Yes it does have a bulkhead, but even so the seat movement is much freer-er than the singlecabs.

Interesting, the windows on the hardtop are different to those on Land Rover's website, and it has alloy wheels too...

There was a mention early on the the Hardtop windows might change in actual production.
The alloys are part of the Boost pack. I think the white one in Sydney had the Heavy Duty pack which included the 130 style wheels.

I find it a bit odd that Land Rover would change the hard top windows to something different to the 110 rear windows. It doesn't seem very efficient from a manufacturing point of view.

Yes, and the corners on the brochure one are a little less rounded. The brochure example windows look the same as the 110 rear & pick-up behind cab windows. They are also pushed a bit further to the rear leaving more metal in the B-pillar.

The hardtop has a higher waist line in the rear I THINK as its essentially the "ute" tray while the wagon window line is lower for better windows for back seat passengers etc. Of course I;ve been wrong before. Twice.
I want a 110 DC ute, in red please. Please. PLEASE !!!!!!

27th July 2009, 01:59 PM
Nope, the waist line in all Defenders is the same...
Remind me never to get any design advice from you guys, you've just got no eye for details... :bangin:

My understanding of the Brisbane test drive is that it wasn't actually carried out by Land Rover themselves but rather by a 'driver training' company who were under contract. This possibly explains some of the personalisation of the models actually on display as I would assume that for insurance purposes, they would have been privately owned by the said Training Co. and specified to their requirements.
My impression of the drive was that the vehicle itself seems to be a very capable piece of gear but the whole course was set out to highlight the "anti stall" function and not much else. Apart from one or two reasonably sharp drops and climbs, a pleasant drive in an average paddock.
The only difference I really noticed, besides the pretty obvious comfort and 'ergonomic' advances, was that it would go the same places that my S2a would go but with a lot less input from the driver! (Minimal input actually, steer and pick any gear, and that is about it).
It would be nice to own though, a good tow vehicle, lopes along at 100Ks at 2000 Rpm in 6th so should be fairly economical on a highway run (which is what it will spend 90% of its life doing). I dare say it would or should spend most of its city life in 5th and lower, but even that should be pretty good with the gearing offered.
An extremely light clutch was the thing that struck me most and I must admit I didn't really like the lack of 'feel' to it but I dare say that is something that would grow on one with use.
I would probably swap Hyacinth for a 110 crew cab.
Regards
Glen

The trainers are not actually LR staff (sub-contrated) but the vehicles are Land Rovers own.
The ones that are correct spec will probably go onto the press fleet. The one's that are not up to spec (the non-ABS models which were ordered incorrectly) will become staff drive cars.

Hardtops with alloy wheels are optioned with the Boost Pack, alloys + ABS/ETC. This is an option on the Hardtop, but standard on the Wagon and 110 Crewcab.
The driving instructors were mostly sub-contracted to Land Rover, who used the same lead instructors in each state.
