Introduce a MOT system, like they have in the UK, every car over 3 years needs to be tested at, a approved garage, not only will this bring in money for the cashed strapped Gove, but more to the point it makes sure theres safer cars on the roads. No more piles of rubbish running around with missing bumpers, lights, etc etc.......

sorry but I would rather pay my high rego prices rather than getting my car inspected. Not worried about the Kingswood passing (except emmisions) but i dunno about my Series IIA....
It's all well and good for the people with rather new cars but not very fair to us people with rattly old landrovers which have average breaks at the best of times, not to mention the oil leaks :(

I understand the points about older cars etc, but what about all those that have bold tyers, no brakes, chuck out black smoke, these are dangerous, not only to those idiots who drive them, but also the rest of us.
These MOT test, work in the rest of the world.....
Or why not put more speed cameras on the motoways, loads a money there....

Unroadworthy vehicles are not a significant factor in the injuries & fatalities of vehicle accidents.
This have been pointed out many times by the Victorian Government when the cry from the motoring groups i.e. VACC......ask for compulsory roadworthy tests.
Like it has been stated...its just another way of ripping cash out of your pocket.

In NSW the cars only have to comply with the rules off the day they where built , not any new rules/ emision tests etc, so a 1960's SII would not need seat belts and the braking test would be far more lenient than that off a 2000-6 defender( hardest thing is to stop in a straight line). It only fail's those poorly maintained cars and after a few inspection place's get prosecuted/sued after prangs for OK'ing bald tyred crapola with no brakes, lights and indicators the rest all test farly evenly.

Why do you think it would make money for the goverment?
The cost in the UK covers the time of the garage to do the test.

I do agree to some point the state of driving here is appauling, speed is not the main factor the crashes here, its just people cant drive....

thats Australia wide and until they change the rules for the application of ADR's its not going to change.
the greenies tried it on to get the ADR's bought up to speed for emission control and it never even got past the lower house.

i would ask why the people should have to suffer for a Labor governments financial incompetence, but its because some people were stupid enough to vote labor into government on both state and federal levels.....
i still maintain that a democracy has many inherant flaws that harm its voting population

As feral says, the two most populous states, Vic & NSW, differ in that NSW has these tests and Vic does not. The difference in accident rates over the years is pretty small, and almost always better in Victoria. This of course has nothing to do with the lack of annual tests, but has a lot to do with the better roads.
The fact is that not only are very few accidents due to vehicle defects, but the ones that are due to these defects are most commonly due to tyre defects, that can and do develop well within the inspection interval.
The annual tests in NSW, in my view, make no significant contribution to road safety but do keep a lot of mechanics in bread and butter (not only in doing the tests, but in fixing problkems uncovered).

Annual inspections don't work.
You get 3 types of workshops, 1 who make up defects hoping to get paid to fix them, 2 the mechanics who would pass anything and then those who are fair and honest.

When I was selling used vehicles I never had any trouble in either NSW or Qld. getting a certificate sight unseen. Plenty of inspection stations had cozy arrangements with the motor trade. Phone up your tame inspector with the numbers, go around and pick up the paper, pay the fee and hand over a carton. Occasionally someone got caught and got fined and lost their inspection licence. As JD says, there were inspectors who were in it for the money, others who tried to generate work by finding non-existent faults, others who were total nit-pickers, and ones who were reasonable.
If there is to be government enforcement of vehicle fitness standrads, I think the system they used in Qld. for a time would work better. Set up a random inspection station on a section of busy road in a place where drivers can not see the setup on approach and can not turn away. Police and transport inspectors in attendance, licences, registration, sobriety, and vehicle fitness all done in one stop. Fines issued, recalcitrant fine and warrant evaders arrested, defect notices issued and really bad vehicles impounded on the spot & not to be driven away.

That maybe the case, but it anythings better than nothing.... I do see what some of you are thinking about getting ripped off at bogus inspection stations, that iam sure still goes on in the uk, theres good and bad ones, plus if they allowed the garage who does your servicing to carry out inspections too, then i cant see that being a bad thing. I sure MR Automotive would be fair????

works in NZ older cars get tested every 6 mouths for brakes, tires, rust, etc
see link Warrant of fitness inspections (http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/vehicle-ownership/warrant.html)
I think the government is worried about, is half of the cars over 10 years would be put off the road and cause a political storm.
