so how heavy is it??:p

top boxes are fine,, if you carry stuff all the time.

you'll have to work twice as hard now to replace those chains and tyres,,

Sweet, Vlad. I like the black more than the blue/white. That's the first I've seen in black.

Pedro, the topboxes come off in seconds. I have to make a frame to fit the one I have for the XJR1300.

It's about 230-ish kgs dry. Ron's XJR would be a tad lighter, though he may be heavier than my 90 odd kgs as he seems to believe I will have the weight advantage.

As Ron says the top box comes off in moments. Sure the bike looks better without the frame/rack but I'll be riding to work every day so its super handy to have the Givi. Somewhere to keep the wet weather lines for my jacket and pants and the helmet.

As to the chain - well modern O-ring chains actually last surprisingly well mate not like those crappy old things we used to have which would be more appropriate for locking the gate to a cattle yard...

Tyres on the other hand well, yes they can use tyres BUT I certainly haven;t been brave enough to come anywhere NEAR the limits of this bike yet as I suspect my limits are much lower.

Gotta do me a "refresher" course - the low speed stuff etc is OK but just need to make sure I;m going to have my techniques right for that high speed (100kph your honour) touring and mountain roads. :D

Oh and did someone mention a drag race?
The GSX has more torques than the XJR so I'd probably win.
Miond you one can never be sure so it would probably require us to race one another say 20 or 30 times to settle the matter... :)

That's an awesome beast Vlad! :BigThumb: That seat looks so comfy.

Give it a fist full and I think your arms might come off! :p

Bummer on the drop, how did that manage to happen? :o

Would have taken some might to get it back up again.

When I got home I kicked the sidestand down and lowered the bike on to it....

...or I would have done had I actually pushed the stand down all the way.

So a 240ish odd kg bike is suddenly on its side, and on my wrist, all at the same time.

As the queen would say "We are not amused".

Turns out I don't have the right technique to lift the bike back onto its wheels and this certainly wasn't the time to learn... I wanted to avoid any extra damage !

Anyway after copping a serve from the bloke I'm living with "You shouldn't ride any bike you can't pick up", they helped me to pick it up out of the slowly forming pool of petrol leaking from the tank. I presume this is normal when a bike is sideways?

Anyway the butcher's bill seems to be...
Broken clutch lever.
Bent / loose LH mirror
Lots of scrapes on the LH side crankcase cover.
The surround to the clocks took a small hit and that has loosened it off I think.
Scratches on the front guard (one place and just needs a touch up).

I think I may have got off lightly. Would have been worse if it was on the other side with that nice pipe...

A bit of a bugger about dopping it Vlad, but a top machine non the less. With the weather fining up now, I will be dragging my beast out for a dust off and an oil change. Now I just have to remember how to ride it...

Enjoy the ride mate! :BigThumb::BigThumb:

Generally never too hot. Happy to put all my clobber on and go for a blat up to about 35 degrees or so, and have been caught out in hotter than that, which starts to get a little unpleasant and moist...

It's the rain and the cold that I don't like riding in - I am a bit of a softy, I am definately a fair weather rider. :p

Vlad, you need one of these (3rd from the bottom) - and I need the one below that.

The way to pick up a bike is as follows.

Get on side of bike facing the underside.
Put one or both feet on the front wheel.
Grab the end of the handlebars with both hands.
Lean back and pull like crazy.

For a bike that heavy you will need another one or two people lifting the from the seat side.

Realising I should know a "right" way I googled and found those and similar vids to the ones Ron posted. I think, though, that ideally one would hav e ahold of the rear brake while acccomplishing this feat however thats not as easy as it sounds.

Ron no need for the models when I have teh real thing eh?

Well the method was shown to me by one of the top motorcycle racers in Australia.
I recently used it at Loyalty Beach to show a charity ride to Cape York of CT110s how to pick em up, and it was easy that way. The 18 year old who had tried to pick one up many many times said he was embarrassed because it was so easy.

I realise that a GSX1400 is much much heavier but the principle remains the same. The last time I had a fall over was on my Honda Hornet 900 in my 1 in 4 driveway. Now try and pick up a bike on a 1 in 4. I ended up winching the steering head up with a come along.

The problem with the video methods arises when there is no grab handle on the lower side. There is nothing then to grab other than a piece of plastic. Also in my experience the steering can turn to lock if you are not controlling the handlebars. So I gather that you had someone help you lift the bike in the end as even I at 190CM and 117Kg could not lift one. If you do it again try to have someone do the handlebar thing while you lift from the side. I bet it is easier. Just because it is on a video does not make it right.
Regards Philip A

From Burpengary to the city and back most days, but mix up the times. Do you travel the same way, or opposite? I remember seeing a Street Triple going the other way a few times. My leathers are black/orange/white.

I like the Street (and Speed) Triple... When I went to the XB Buell (from an M2 Buell), it was between the XB, a Speed Triple, and a Duc Monster. Years of running with belt drive on the Buells had me converted, though - I couldn't go back to a chain drive.

Sometimes i see you going both directions, its definitely you with the leathers then, full suit yeah? little mirror on your helmet?

I normaly have a big grey triumph tail pack on my bike (meant for the Tiger1200), my commute times are about as consistent as the weather in Melbourne though.

Now however it's torn down more and mostly in boxes..... awaiting some parts from the US before any progress can really happen again.

I'm not doing a real "cafe racer" build on it,. more going for a "classic" look.

I found it under a tarpaulin in a barn in Germany.

Brought it back to Australia and now it is waiting n my garage for me to stop playing with my other toys and do some minor restoration as needed.

It runs.

It also came with the original sale papers and owners manual.

It is a 1954 RT175
Very nice find, and with the paperwork too. It looks great:cool:. Just needs a good polish does it? Doesn't look like there's much missing or wrong with it if it runs.
My Dad had a DKW in his younger years in Holland. He has talked about it several times through his life. It looks like the owner of the one you found liked it as much as my Dad seemed to like his:).

Not what I have at the moment - but what I started with....

Congratulations !!!!

My first ever bike (and the only vehicle I have ever purchased new) was a Honda CD250U - and that was when they WERE new !

Nice little things, just not very quick !

I stacked mine twice (to be more precise I got hit twice by cars), fixed it, sold it to my sister, she sold it to her boyfriend, he stacked it, fixed it... stacked it again and I gather its now been "cafe'd"

More than 20 years on it's still going strong !

Well I am having withdrawal sysmptoms.

More than 3 weeks ago the bike went in for a service. Among other things it turns out the sprocket carrier was near shot - lucky they found it - I'd hate to have that fail whilst underway !

Naturally as the GSX1400 was discontinued in 2007 (euro emissions laws to blame) the parts aren't generally in stock. And not only that Suzuki have none in-country ! So a part was ordered from Suzuki Japan and they've now advised they won;t ship until 15 September !!!

By the time I get it back it will have been off the road for 5-6 weeks !!! Aaaarrrggghhhh

My luck, when I get it back it'll start raining in biblical fashion

Nice bike Vlad, my old man has the same one but with the blue and white paint scheme.
Our old driveway was a steep, slippery, winding affair, and dad dropped it a few times when he first got it.
You're right, they're bloody heavy :D
They're also super quick and a lot of fun
Hope you get back on yours soon.

have only owned two, and have pretty limited riding experience.
but they have both been DRZ400SM's.
Chosen, as they are cheap to maintain (good while at uni), pretty bulletproof, still quick enough in the twisties to be fun.

This is my current bike.
Have just ordered tail tidy, LED indicators, MRD SSW exhaust. Will need to sort out the jetting for carby (thinking JD kit), open up the airbox and put a road filter on it. Hoping for a 3-4hp increase.
Keening up to get it out to the track!

Hi all,
I thought this section was deleted but found it again:eek:
After having a couple bikes..Kawasaki KLR250, Suzuki DR250, Honda 500, Suzuki Bandit 600 I had a bit of a rest from bikes & let my young girls grow a little so they wouldn't burns their hands on the hot exhaust when in the garage.

SO after going to look at buying a BMW, as i always wanted one, especially working with the Police Force & building their Cars & Bikes & SOG gear. Great rides & BMW spend countless dollars on getting the ergonomics right for their bikes.
I ended up on a Harley:p & haven't looked back. Damn comfortable & sounds brilliant.

So what i have now (Iron 883)....& what i want in the next few years or so (Road King).

In the mid 80's I used to own a GSXR 1100G model when they first came out and loved the bike. I sold it when I decided riding it up the Old Gosford Highway (Mt White) every Sunday was more than likely going to end in tears or even much worse as often happened up there most weekends back then. Plus back then you could not race an 1100 in Australia so I had to sell it if I wanted to go racing, anyway I always regretted sellng it. So when I saw this immaculate completely standard 1100J model come up for sale I couldn't pass it up as you rearly see them in this condition with so few clicks on the clock (7,500). Will get it registered for this summer so looking forward to riding a classic Slabbie Gixxer once again, though no where near as fast as I used to.

Below is the only GSXR1100 to ever race in Australia at a national level, its a 97 WT model and was raced in the first year of the Formula Xtreme Championship in 97 by Warwick Nowland and then in 98 by then Kiwi Superbike champion Tony Rees. I sold it at the end of 98 and again later on regretted getting rid of it, especially given its history. It came up for sale about two years ago so I bought it back. I'm looking at painting it back to its old original race colours and maybe add a few hotrod mods to further increase its performance for New Era PCRA racing next year. It would be good to see the old girl race again.

Pardon the thumbnail but here is a pic of a BMW K1200S Power Cup bike, there were only ever two of them imported by BMW in 2005 specially for racing in the Nakedbike class here in Australia. These specially built by BMW Power Cup bikes were raced as a support class at MotoGp in Europe for a year, so there were only about 40 in total of them made just for racing, most were written off.

I owned one of them for two years back in 96/97 and had it raced, then sold it after BMW lost interest in racing them, again like the 1100 slab Gixxer that I owned earlier I always regretted selling the BMW so when it came up again for sale earlier this year I bought it back.

As far as I know it is the only one left intact here in Australia now, the other one was written off at a ride day at PI. Anyway to me its unique and very fast (175hp) collector item and I'm rapt to have it back.

Very nice bike. I saw some footage of them racing in Europe in a torrential downpour with an inch and more water on the track. Wearing full wets the racing was frenetic, among the best I have seen. Dragging the covers most corners too.
A real art piece worthy of being centre of the living room.

When these first came out I took one for a test ride - first bike I have ever been on that scarred me, found my self doing monos without trying. Read a review that called it a "stupid bike" as you would find your self doing burn outs and monos on a regular basis, including with a pillion. I think the next years model came out with a different cam to tame it down a bit.

My BIL has a Guzzi - around a 2007 California model - he likes it. I have only had a ride on it once - first shaft drive bike for me to ride as well - really noticed the shaft torque going around round about but he said you get use to it.
He had an unusual warranty claim on it when the cam shaft broke in half - other than that I do not Know of him having any other issues. I also knew a guy who had an early 80's Guzzi (I think it was a Le mans model) and he loved it never had any major issues.

I really like the V7 model particularly in the Cafe racer style, just another on my wish list.

I have a 1980 Moto Guzzi SP1000 NT, ( the relic), hell of a bike, but too fast for Australia, ( or my licence anyhow).
From the owners manual; cruising speed; 90 mph one up with luggage, 85 mph, 2 up with luggage , Fuel consumption 37 mpg at 90 mph.
About 200 miles at 90 mph between fuel stops.
Its bit of a handfull around town, with its very tall gears and long wheel base heavy clutch etc, but still awesome to ride in the mountains on the higher speed sections.

Nothing much to write home about these days, but in 1976 when the bike came out it was matched only by the R 100 S & RS BMs IMV for long sustained comfortable cruising. The good thing was you could ride 1200 kms in a day and still walk at the of it. :)

I also have a 2010 750 Guzzi V7 classic, ("the scooter"), its such a joy to ride, so light and responsive it's like riding a 250, and given the number of speed cameras etc around much more kind to your driver licence.

Both guzzis are easy to maintain and cheap to run.

Plus a couple of 2 stroke vespas, a drum brake one and a disc brake one. I stopped riding the old drum brake one ,It was dangerous. The modern cars could easily out brake me so i was always worried about tail ending someone.
The later disc brake model was much better, more powerful, better brakes and safer to ride. I lived in Singapore and clocked up about 12,000 kms on it over a couple of years. Now in the shed waiting for some love. The are vespas in Singapore like this with 200,000 kms on them, guys have been riding them to work for 15 years. One old i guy i spoke to told me he had to replace the piston & rings at 120,000 kms. :).

Nice Guzzi simmo! They fetch quite a premium these days. When I got my r100 i would have gone with a guzzi if I found one. I do love the bimmer though - keeps my feet warm in the Canberra winter :)

simmo
5th October 2015, 09:05 PM
Thanks Flagg, My next favorite after the Guzzi is the boxer BMs, only for the want of some cash is there not one in my garage. R100S, Or R100 RS, would be my picks, though if an R90 S fell into my arms i wouldn't complain. I remember cruising on my friends R100 at 160 kph. Effortless, but needing some aerodynamics. :wasntme:

Le mans seem to fetch good prices, but as an all rounder an SP 1000 is a better bike. As a collectors bike no one seem to bother with them much unless to make them look like a Le Mans.

I have the full aerodynamic set for my bike but leave the lower parts off, they're made of unobtainium, i'm frightened to break them. The top parts are not so rare and I have a spare.

Generally I found my Guzzis over nearly 20 years of ownership to be simple an reliable bikes, very good handling ( better than it's BMW contemporaries :wasntme: ), durable and maintainable at home, ( except for the EFI part of the 750 ). as the M-G add used to say "long legged and easy to live with".

Parts are reasonable, except engine parts can be dear, but I hardly ever bought any. I replaced the piston rings and exhaust valves /guides at about 100,000 kms. To my surprise the Nickesil cylinders you still see the honing marks in them and the pistons were like new ones.

The old 1970s & 80s electric was a problem, but easily sorted out with a few relays. If you get one thats been well serviced after it will last longer than you :) IMV quite underappreciated bikes. but I'm biased :) cheers simmo

Yes, I LOVE them. Can't afford one and haven't found one as good as my GSX1400 (which financially makes sense at any rate) but I do love them and have ridden a few over the years.

The new Cali 1400 range is brilliant but well beyond my price range....

I think Moto-Guzzi are a much under-rated bike.

My F6 is currently up for sale. When I sell this I am upgrading to a D4. (Work Lease). Once I have taken all the good bits off my D3 and put them on the D4, whatever I sell this for will go towards the new purchase. I had my heart set on a Triumph Thunderbird but now I am not so keen as they are made in Thailand. A new Moto-Guzzi Eldorado is $24000 rideaway. Very good value compared with a Harley.

You referring to my Versys? I've only ridden once, happened to get it up on one wheel without trying (I'm not much of a stuntman) :)

Can't wait to pick it up on Tuesday!

Yeah. 10k of dirt between my house and the nearest bit of tar is a bit of a sore point with the GT650R..... a dirt bike it aint! The Versys looks a tad more user friendly for the dirt.

My latest machine, the Ducati in the foreground. The Buell at the back is the machine she replaces... 100,000 kms of pretty reliable service, but too long in the tooth for the daily commute.

My wife's XV250 in the middle that has been pressed into commuter service for the past few weeks while waiting for the new bike.

The Buell has a gearbox output shaft bearing on it's way out. Normally a split-the-cases job, but I'm going to try and do a sneaky...

Hi Vlad, Guzzis are around second hand for reasonable prices, if you can sit and wait for one. Brisbane has reasonable support for them , but once you get to know them they are mostly serviceable at home.

1996 Moto Guzzi California 1100i (http://www.bikesales.com.au/private/SSE-AD-3615149/1996-Moto-Guzzi-California-1100i)

81.000 km is just run in for $7000, that's a lot of bike for your money.

My old black relic has about 160,000 kms and still runs perfectly. The clutch has been replaced and the exhaust valves, and cam chain, piston rings. I'll probably try to get it on club rego next year, I'd like to Keep it fully registered but it costs as much as a car to register. I have the 750 registered and I want to register one of the vespas as well, so the rego costs stack up unfortunately.
cheers simmo

Not selling the Buell are you mate?

My GSX1400 is only about $9K from that magic 100,000 km mark... needs new brakes and tyres etc but she's only just run in !

Not selling the Buell are you mate?

Sadly, yes. Realistically, you could keep her going very easily for a couple more times around the clock... except for the fact that HD have basically forgotten that they ever made Buells.

Parts for them are starting to get very expensive. Local dealer (Morgan & Wacker) are rarely even stocking most parts, including consumables/minor accident spares - such as levers and drive belts (!). HD Australia have wound down how many spares they even have in the country, so you end up having to wait for a shipment from the US.

Too difficult to keep going for a daily commuter.

Having said all that, the 848 is a tremendous bike... a couple of weeks in for me now, and I'm impressed more than I would have believed.

The 848 is also a far superior pillion machine than the Buell, by emphatic account!

I was chatting to a bloke who was riding one of these the other day, Ural 750 outfit! He had plenty of good things to say about it. They are basically Russian a copy of the BMW motorcycle.
Apparently in the left hand drive countries where the sidecar is on the right hand side of the motorcycle, a drive shaft can be fitted to drive the sidecar wheel (see last picture).

Cheers, Mick.

Sorry both wrong, Bare Island Fort La Perouse:p
(Mission Impossible set)

You are correct about the bars though, standard factory bars in the first pic, I've changed the bars and fitted a Z1R replica bikini fairing, will be fitting standard factory exhausts soon.

When my brother was living in China he had a couple of the Chinese Ural copies, tried to talk him into bringing them out here when he moved back.

My ride. 2 years old now, went for my first ride last week after a 6 month hiatus due to a shoulder reconstruction. I had a blast. Just plotted a 1900km round trip from the Goldy to Richmond NSW via Buckets way, Putty rd, up the Bells line of road, back across the Bylong valley and up the NE hwy home again for later this year, cant wait!!.

are 4 wheels allowed?

We've got my old 2004 Can Am and a 2015 Polaris on the farm, they are the only bikes currently, although I had a Ducati ST2 and SWMBO had a ZZR250 before children. I'll have to dig out some pictures...

Started life as a street cup, but is a work in progress.

i never thought a road bike with such low figures on paper ( 68hp & 84nm even after Cam, power commander, modified intake, cat delete, vance and hines pipes etc ) could bring so many smiles, it is just a joy to ride.

The last road bike had more than double the horsepower and was about the same amount of fun but this way, I get to keep my licence...... and it looks so pretty and sounds so good[biggrin], pretty agile in the twisties too.182526182527182528

Seems not too many posting here!. One more for the stable

I was missing the ability to do the occasional off road blast, but love the sweet 900 water cooled Trumpy engine and driveline .... What to do[biggrin]

Did a few mods and really loving it. I must be at the time of life where riding a slow bike fast is more fun than riding the fast bike slow.

Got this a couple months back for a steal,2013 diavel carbon. Just bringing it up to my spec:
Heated grips (yes I know I'm getting soft)
Shock off for service and valve work
New fork cartridges
Full service
Valve clearance and belt adjust.
