I had a very interesting weekend when a group i am associated with had a display at the Living History weekend at Fort Lytton.
never been to anything like it before and i was pretty impressed with the concept which i can best describe as "Playschool for Grownups"
just about every era from the romans to the modern day with a fair bit of the emphasis being on the military aspects but with a nice touch the feminine side of things as well.

Living history groups have always fascinated me, especially the medievil groups (and to an extent the military ones).
I'm attending an event later this year down here with teh DTHT which has a lot of living history groups attending called the Midlands Military Meet and Rendezvous. Home Page - The Midlands Military Meet and Rendezvous (http://www.mmmr.com.au/)

i have friends in the UK that do re-enactments etc I used to do it with them...its great fun riding horses and having sword fights...you ever tried hitting a lettace on a stake while galloping towards it...its not easy thats for sure.
they have also been involved in a lot of films becasue of it
I think its great....and a lot of them take it right down to the finiest detail...great for kids to learn to:)

The event is open to any one, but if you want to display a vehicle you need to either contact MVC or any one of the groups that attend. There always keen to have a couple of vehicles there. The site to get your info from is historyalive.org.au (http://www.historyalive.org.au/) note its usually held on the Queens Birthday weekend but due to being QLD150 is was pushed back. i also took a few pics between cannon firings.

shame you didn't post it into upcoming events....or do you have to be involved to go?
didnt think to put it in events as it wasnt an aulro trip.
anyone can go and many thousands did.
if you want to display you need to be part of a formal group with liability insurance etc etc etc
a couple of the participants were hurt over the weekend by flaying swords so i can see why they insist on the insurance.

Iam sure that QLHF would help out with insurance as they do like having vehicles as they always atract the crowds, also most injurys that happened on feild wernt to bad for a change lol your more likely to get hurt worse playing footy that doing the combat.
I just had to take a pic of my tent at the event lol.

they wanted 30 odd $'s per person for the insurance via becoming members of their assoc. to display, if my memory serves me rightly. we have our own so it wasnt an issue...

Lost Landy.
You should have said hello. I was there as well, with the KFM-Light mobile field kitchen and the HMMWV. My family really enjoyed the medi-evil displays. The scottish guards set up inside the fort was just brilliant.
The Pax Romana group sent a guy to hospital on late saturday with a sword to the head, and the Knights Germanica opened up the claret bank on Sunday with a similar incident.
The QLHF organise it, and if you are not a member of them you will need your own PL insurance. In fact, one group was refused displaying due to insufficient insurance.
Mim, Nick, Michelle and Andrew did a great job organizing it as well as the others involved and we will definately be back again next year. Meet you in the Tavern for an ale squire:D
20th year next year.
You mentioned "in between canon firings" If you were one of the white helmets jogging around the 64lbers, your Bombadier was sharing a few bundy's in our tent on Sat night.

I put in events that I think will interest people.....not necessarily AULRO events ;)
I would have been interested had I even known about it as I missed the tourney due to being down south
maybe next year.......

what you can get away with and what i can do are two vastly different things...
i get reamed one way or another no matter which step i take so tend to be more than a little reserved in what i do.....

I wasnt with the Scotts firing the 64 pounder guns, i was where we showed the effects of cannon fire on troops with solid shot & grape shot.
Theres always a chance of an ale or 2 at the tavern next year.
I have to say its quite a funny site to see early Sunday morning when you see vikings leaving the Red Army encampments & a SS Officer exiting a NVG (New Varangian Guard) tent in the wee hours lol.

20th year next year.

Is it really 20 years since a couple of blokes not only had the idea of gathering all those re-enactors at Lytton Fort for a weekend each year but put the effort into making it happen for the first time !!!

I think it is QLHF's 20th year. This year was History Alives, tenth. At fort Lytton anyway.

Thinking about it would have been about 1990 that the first encampments were held at Lytton Fort. If memory serves these were at Easter and participants were limited to the time period of the fort.
