Do I or don't I lease a black Defender crew cab ute?
I like the fact it's a 110 ute
but
I don't like the Poxy Puma, it would have been better used as a ceiling fan motor in a far away sewage treatment plant. Let's face it compared to the engine in my 110 the puma has about as much pulling power as a homeless man at a miss universe contest.
I don't like the dash, It's plastic and Fordish in appearance. Series III had more style. The body and trim are cheap and shoddy in comparison to my nearly 25yr old county, lack of galved trim and gutters? No Sals at the rear or comfy seats. It has anti stall, but so does my Isuzu (it's called a compression and low gearing).
I don't know why I looked at one, come on Puma owners convince me why I should step out of a suzi and into a new one?
Is it true the name Puma came from a very early owner wearing out a pair of Puma shoes walking to and from the dealers for warrantee work?

I' not going to convince you to buy one....from what you have written you don't want one. so why do you need convincing?
You get in a Puma becasue you want to not becasue you have too......but bare this in mind it might be a POS in your eyes and you have the greatest county in the world but which car got in and out of that great basin at Stockton;)....that's right people it wasn't the county. in fact he was told not to bother going in because he will not get out! :p

True, but on the other hand would you take the Puma some of the places I have taken the Turdis?
This is why I of two minds over this.
The county has a few niggling issues, it needs a rebuild, turbo, brake upgrades etc...... I could spend a lot of money on it, or get a puma, I would be content with a Puma. Almost happy.
Spend a week in an Isuzu 110 and you'll see, your right I have almost convinced myself.

yes eventually! the 90 never had a scratch on it once, it was Ians pride and joy until the day when he made that little mistake got the scratch, got the ****s got over it and then got stuck in!!
at the moment the Puma has no need to go and get wrecked off road we have 2 other cars for that....but plate it up, protect it and stick some decent tyres on and there is no reason why I puma can't do what your turdis does its a VERY CAPABLE VEHICLE. However whether or not you would want to scratch it is another matter.

County's drive different, they're not at all refined or sterile, they are a pleasure to drive like the way a Mini a Moke an open topped windscreen down Series or riding an old Norton is a pleasure. The smell, the noise, the vibrations.
HP and Fathers favourite are both brown sauces, same basic ingredients. One is good in anything, even as a substitute for sugar in coffee. The other tastes like crap.

Spend 10-15k on the county and it will last longer than any new one at 60k.
you could crew cab your county for under 3k, but why bother unless its for tax purposes.
If you think it drives different to a defender, look me up when your in sydney next, i will take you for a spin. I would say my one would be quicker than a defender (stock tdi and td5, although i have never driven a poo-ma), It steers and stops the same (defender steering wheel does wonders), and would be as quiet, if not quieter.
I am not fond of the new dash either. i thought it would grow on me, but it hasnt. Mabe in a few moe years.
If i had unlimited budget, an 07 defender with a flat grill, turbo isuzu and tdi style dash. Hang on, i pretty much have one of them already:D

Technically its not a 110 ute, Correct me if iam wrong but i thought the definition of a Ute, ( in the 4x4 world ) was a a vehicle of some sort. with a separate rear body? The 110 CC is all one section...

I have figured out what the County has that the Puma hasn't.
DB you are correct, if I had a flash new Puma I would not take it offroad.
My County has a low dollar value
With this comes the ability to belt up every panel and only have a ****ed off wife, not an ex wife
The ability of, if it ever broke catastrophically, just leave it there where it stands and catch the next available transportation home.
On top of this there are a lot of components on the early 110's and county's that are built a lot better than on today's vehicles.
The new ones don't come in poo brown, black would suffice, the turdis II doesn't sound right and darky is a tad too politically incorrect to sit in my works car park.

My ute was a 1978 CL model (ex Navy issued)
It was regoed as a ute, not a cut down car, I paid more for rego and greenslips due to it being a ute and not a cut down car, I had to sell it when we had kids due to it being a 3 seater ute and not a cut down car and the legal requirements associated with fitting kid seats in it. If I had it now it would be my aux superannuation package.

I was not trying to troll, I am honestly trying to convince myself into buying one.
It's not working.
I cannot justify 2x 110's and a D2. Yet I cannot bring myself to get rid of my suzi.
It's not an Isuzu thing either, it's a Defender/County thing. A member up this way has a 300tdi in a county, given the choice I would pick that over a 300tdi Defender

my 4bd1t uses the same juice my 300tdi used or did till i put the roof basket on.
where the 300tdi needs to be at 1800 rpm to develop some guts the isuzu is pulling from 900 rpm. pulling out of my driveway with a loaded trailer on can be done in first high, not first low like i had to in the 300tdi.
where the isuzu runs out of puff is at 2300 rpm but at 110kph my isuzu is doing 1910 rpm and still well within its power band.
took a while for me to get used to it but the isuzu is a better package with the exception of the vibration it generates imho

I should hit the half mil in my isuzu before the years out. It will be halfway through its life.
Dobbo, the new pumas have their purpose, if everyone wanted and bought the indestructable isuzu countys, they would be very expensive, and landrover would not sell any new cars. The new pumas are just the next generation of seccond hand cars. In 20 years time when the countys are thin on the ground there will be pumas for 5 grand, and people like you and me wont feel bad cuting into them with a grinder and swiping the door on a tree.
I am in a similar frame of mind as you. I would love a new puma, even with the horror stories (the p38s had theirs too, and it just makes the owners more pasionate and determined), however i cannot justify the 60k on somthing i will cut up and punish.

I don't know why I am allowing myself to be sucked into this debate - maybe I'm just bored, but here's my two cents worth of feedback...
Do I or don't I lease a black Defender crew cab ute?
I like the fact it's a 110 ute
I do too.
but
I don't like the Poxy Puma, it would have been better used as a ceiling fan motor in a far away sewage treatment plant. Let's face it compared to the engine in my 110 the puma has about as much pulling power as a homeless man at a miss universe contest.
You must be talking about a different Puma engine then. And I don't think I've ever seen any homeless men in the Miss Universe contest so it's a difficult comparison to make.
I don't like the dash, It's plastic and Fordish in appearance.
I just like the fact it has a dash and the switches are in a logical location. Are you seriously suggesting that British Leyland dash design is better than Ford design? I know Ford isn't anything special, but you're on drugs :bangin:
Series III had more style.
??? See above comment regarding BL design...
The body and trim are cheap and shoddy in comparison to my nearly 25yr old county, lack of galved trim and gutters?
I think the level of fit & finish are only shoddy when compared to other "modern" vehicles, but compared to older Defenders - you can't be serious can you? It's a question of a dodgy bit of plastic trim vs no trim at all.
No Sals at the rear
That can be addressed with aftermarket bits can't it?
or comfy seats.
I love the seats. After five hours on the highway last Sunday, I love them even more.
It has anti stall, but so does my Isuzu (it's called a compression and low gearing).
Sounds like we need a head-to-head comparison.
I don't know why I looked at one, come on Puma owners convince me why I should step out of a suzi and into a new one?
Be honest... you looked at one because you want one. You really, really want one and this thread is just attention seeking isn't it?
Is it true the name Puma came from a very early owner wearing out a pair of Puma shoes walking to and from the dealers for warrantee work?
I don't think anyone would wear their shoes out taking a vehicle back to the dealers - I'd ride in the tow truck.:p

Just for information:
A new isuzu County Wagon cost about $35,000 in 1986 (according to Redbook).
That in today's money is about $71,000. (according to Cost of Living Australia (http://www.wabmo.com/Cost/Australia.htm) )
I guess that an equivalent Defender today ie with the County goodies like the salisbury diff, carpet, and a modern Isuzu equivalent motor together with the Puma nice to haves like AC that works, ETC, ABS, would be a goodly amount more than $71,000.
Who here would buy a new one even If LR thought that it would be a good idea? :p

I can see where Dobbo is coming from (unless of course he is trolling;)).
I am in the same boat when contemplating replacing the Defender. While it has a bit to go yet it is not great for the passenger so sooner or later a change will happen.
I would love a new 130 twin cab and like the layout etc. Even my whole family would like one. But in reality it probablly just wont happen. The issue for me is not the vehicle, but the lack of service centres and parts availability outside the metro area in WA. As these vehicles get higher tech and require computers etc to do even the most basic diagnostics, LRA have lost the plot. Not saying they need a full dealership in each town, but they need a suitable, qualified mechanic that can do authorised servicing, repairs, warranty work and who stocks basic spares like filters, belts an hoses. I know I can get them by mail, but this can take more than two weeks to country WA (I am waiting on bike parts ordered 10th July and sent on 15th) and is unacceptable. My wife hates the fact that with all 3 LRs we have had I have had to keep a supply of spares in my shed.
As much as I hate Toyota or Nissan it will probablly be one of these as you can just about walk into any garage and obtain basic spares and servicing.

I have to disagree with you Craig, when I worked at the smelter as a mobile plant fitter I could not buy toyota parts as easy as LR,I waited many, many times for parts to be shipped from over east,I waited two weeks for a service kit for a cruiser auto, when I serviced the disco ZF had one on the shelf.I have never had any trouble buying any part for either the disco, fender or L322 nor have I had any trouble with servicing.I am criticle of toyota as they make very big claims about reliability and ease of servicing with thier dealer network but I have found it all to be complete BS,as I have posted before they now have a field service unit as the vehicles have been failing in remote area's and I was costing them huge sums to be brought back to town.I had 8 tojo's on my books and every one of them had warranty work,my hilux had 6 in the 12 months I had it and we parked two troopy's that were lemons from the word go.I keep parts for my vehicles at home,I would if I drove anything else for one reason,we both live in an area that with a short drive you are in a land of nothing. If you can keep a Td5 on the road the puma will be easy, remember it has a transit engine so service it at the ford dealer. You have to look at the outcome of the deal,if it's least what is it going to cost a week and what is the final payment, remember that defenders hold thier money more than any other vehicle and a 3 year old duel cab would pull a premium,IMHO I think they will be the most sort after model. If the residual is around 50% you could pay that out and sell it privately for a tidy profit. If you want a Real British ute that you can accually fit a full sheet of plaster in......I thought the 1800 ute was an Aussie design. I know a few have appeared in the UK but they're all from our neck of the woods. That looks like a great example Clarkie.

Pat
Pat,
There are plenty of places in Kalgoorlie and even Kambalda that you can get basic Toyota parts, maybe not the Toyota dealership:o. I had to get Toyotas serviced up there and had no issue. Even have afriend with a workshop that I can guarantee stocks most Toyota high volume consumables as it is his bread and butter.I am generally talking about filters, belts, hoses etc (high volume consumables) and every man and his dog stocks those for Toyota and Nissan. You are right the Toyo dealer should have service kits though. After Gold City LR closed (shame because they were great) I could not even get a oil filter for a tdi let alone one for the TD5 or a drive belt. Yes I know there are some Rycos that will fit, but generally no one had them in stock. Esperance is worse again and I even had the local Auto1 guy try and tell me that the Penrite Diesel 5 was the wrong oil for the TD5 and I should be running 10w.
And not for a minute saying a Toyota is a better vehicle, because they are not and are prone to failure.

Not a one-off Juddy. Don't know how common they were, but my uncle in Adelaide had the sedan and the ute in the same model, both in a light green colour, for many years. The ute proved to be the more reliable - I can recall that he had a few suspension issues with the sedan - but it did ride very smoothly when all was well with it.

WGAF?
I can put the kids in the seats and stuff in the tray, thats a ute.
Next you'll be telling me my old Valiant wasn't a ute due to the same reason.
Or they'll be telling you they aren't your kids.
