Hi I'd like to start a thread on everyones view on the best landy ever made in your opinion. You can be specific ie.. 98 Tdi Defender etc but a bit of a reason why would also be great, you can also put in your worst model ever made too.
So i'll start with my view, having owned a 83 V8 rangie, a 98 Tdi disco and a 2000 TD5 defender and having had friends with alot of other models my fav model would have to be a

94-98 TDi Discovery It's a great diesel motor and still very basic, good comfort levels. It's an good car around town and still alot of fun in the bush a few basic mods and it's a great affordable wagon.

Well, you could have asked a less inflamatory question, like what's the best religion.... :D

Anyway, I am probably with you on the last of the TDi Discos for all round uselfulness. Great fuel economy too for such a big car.

I will never agree that one vehicle is better than another.
They are all good and for different reasons.
My favorites are.
Series 2a with four 4 cylinder petrol Ex army only
Bullet proof motor, army twin tanks and heavy duty suspension, good allround design, bull bar, tool holders.winch models even better.
The only weak point is the axles, and a good driver would have little problem with this.

Stage one series three v8 with LT95 transmission.
Has got the practical series body designs and one of the best riding leaf suspensions around on non table top versions.
Good to have the rangie rover running gear in a series body.
It is a pity they only up graded the steering and brakes on later models ,but with the rubbish transmissions

The early classic rover rover........good all rounder and that suspension as stock was brilliant, comfortable and the whole vehicle was light years ahead of its time for 1972 when they were released in Aust....nothing could touch it.

101 landrover
Early range rover running gear with extra strong Salisbury diffs front and rear.
Used series lightweight design features in the body work.
Tuff and small ,very light, powerfull and ahead of its time for its army specs in 1970 when the design was finalised

I own a defender dual cab 130 TDI, it is a good vehicle in terms of brakes and handling, capacity , suspension etc.
Fuel burn of the TDI 300 is good, but compared to earlier vehicles weak transmissions and some design/reliability issues let the vehicle down as the soft alumumin body panels,,,,,birmabrite is good stuff as used in the early series vehicles

Pretty much any of the range rovers!

But i like the 1989 with all the goodies like electric windows split rear seat arm rests. I would love one of these specked up and with a Diesel motor and 5 speed manual gearbox :)

My 98 Tdi Discovery does the goods as well, but im a rangy man at heart! :)

As for worst personally the Freelander but i have to hand it too land rover when they made these they created an entire new market :)

The best one imho, is the Defender 2.8i - don't know if you got these in Oz or not. The later D3s are also up there for combining off road ability with on road performance and comfort and reasonable reliability.

That was my head speaking, heart says original 2 door Rangie.

Seconded. NAS 90 would be at the top of my list, or if more specific 90's in general, but I also love 101's and really really want one. In fact I like most Landys really:)

County-Isuzu is the creme de la creme of Land Rovers. The first steps in the right direction of putting in enough engine coupled with the good long travel coil suspension, disc brakes, decent sized radiator etc. Later designs diverted from the path to produce inferior vehicles when they could have kept improving to produce what they always could and should have. They really do need to employ a Chief arse kicker and head banger.

Don't know about the best, as it's a purely subjective choice, because many would never have heard of Land Rovers before the current models.

But, the prettiest Land Rover ever made, in my humble opinion, would have to be a S11/early S11A SWB Truck Cab in Deep Bronze Green with White (Limestone?) roof.

BTW, I love my Td5 Defender and my Series 1's and my ex mil 11A, and still have a soft spot for our old Stage 1 V8. Got to love the sound of that motor burbling through the water during creek crossings.

84 2 door V8 manual. Trick that up with the goodies or leave it stock, its very classic and understated.

96-98 tdi Disco Basic enough to get job done, refined enough to do it well and comfortably.

After 9 of the buggers this is my conclusion.

My Disco 300Tdi gave me 11 years of pleasure with a little pain...a great idea well executed.

Do I miss her?

Time moves on and I am optimistic that my current drive I will look back on with fond memories.

Any way I get to see the old girl occasionally.

D2 cause it made Ford realise that they had to pull no punches in the build quality stakes - the result a brilliant D3 + RR and LR stays afloat.

To date, D3.

Best value for money, at present, P38.

I've owned a few over the years from a '62 to a chipped '02 and have enjoyed each one :)

But my favourite one, one that I could get up at 3am and enjoy driving with a smile on my face  would have to be my current one........'85 County - Isuzu :burnrubber:

Allrounder the D1 by far,for work Tdi Defender. The classic RR would be up there but it can't match the D1 Tdi for performance and economy. Pat

For a family tourer, I'd have to say the last of the 4 speed isuzu countys without ac. Strongest gearbox, strongest engine, strongest cvs, lift up classic door handles (that landrover still use on the back door of the current model). heck, you can start them and drive them without a battery. The coil suspension is still used on the current model, as it cannot be improved.

As a work truck, i would have to say perenti 6x6 army spec - the wide cab one.

for somthing your wife to drive to the shops, and a bit of outback touring, a disco is fine but space is limited.

would hav to be a 80 series land cruiser of course............................:p :wasntme:
200tdi ,300tdi, isuzu and stage3 v8

200tdi=simplicity and rugedness

300tdi=performance and comfort (probably because its a bit newer)

isuzu=away from its numerous bad points the sound and reliability

stage3=pop used to love it (good old bumppy)

The LS1 powered county of course!

Rangier Rover

4BD1 county/110" and 120" by far in standard form. Next for me are classic the Rangies as more comfort but not as durable in standard form.

I was going to say mine. But after trying to stuff nothing into the 110 this week and not being able to, I'm saying Mulgo's is best.

I would have to say Series II/IIA (but perhaps I am a little biased...), but once the family starts expanding I will be looking for an Isuzu 110 to replace Gus. (assuming I ever get Gus on the road that is! :o)

The very first one you drive or ride in has to be the best.
So Series 2a 1971 station wagon with almost flat springs, a safari roof, mustard yellow, dog in the front middle seat.

I guess that those of us fortunate to have more than one type of LR just cannot decide ...? (and do not have to)

I would have to nominate the Isuzu engined 110s, followed by the Late Series 2a four cylinder petrol. Strangely enough, I own both ........

But both represent the pinacle of a line of development before they started to go bad, the 2a followed by the S3 with poor quality materials and plastic dash, and the 110 by the Defender with smaller, less durable engines, albeit more powerful, less durable CV joints, loss of galvanised capping etc.

Make this thread a Poll as it would be easier to keep track of.
Im a Disco owner and would live to say a Discovery but I would have to say an Ex Army Defender.
