Haha some great replys in that thread

You're right, we can't do anything properly. If you really want to **** up a Land Rover, get the Australians to do it
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/

I think that was a wasted jibe - the Uninformed one is from the land down under. I don't think the Australians have ever produced a 4x4 of their own. Not one anyone's ever heard of anyway.

ahem... does anyone want me to refer to my Holden Overlander thread :p :p :p

Didnt Rover have a factory in Australia at some point?
If the Aussies ever designed their own truck made with aluminium
it would probably be a bunch of beer tins riveted together!

Nothing worth worrying about.
But they did do one thing exactly right. Speccing their landrovers with big Isuzu diesels in the late 80's. Both for military and civilian use.

Where else in the world could you buy a 6wd landrover powered by a 3.9 tdi.

princess, i can tell you it is far more interesting watching this perentie doing rear 4 wheel burnouts and running the 1/4 then watching your .........well.......driving through puddles!!!

perentie probably has more flex too

you want to make your rig more of a publicity tool bolt on some AUSTRALIAN maxidrive portals coupled with some AUSTRALIAN maxi drive 4 wheel steer coupled with some AUSTRALIAN maxidrive lockers, axles, c.v's, xfer reduction gears, H/D drag link, etc, etc, etc

BWAHAHA!!!

You could take the tyres aswell! Just a matter of unbolting the diff at the radius arms, disconnect the brake lines and the four bolts for each driveshaft. two bolts for steering links and away you go.

EDIT: I forgot they have the wattslink at the rear that need to be unbolted. I think with air tools and a hoist 1 hour is plenty of time.

yeah it sort of looks cool but to tell the truth if it was mine I would sell the 49's and put 37/14.5/16 mud bogger tyres under it that would make it far more usable at least where I come from, it looks like it would be to prone to tipping over unless the rims were more offset.

Having said that I would like to have a go in it just to see what it can do in it's current set up. with the amount of mud up here in the top end I can see potential. But then I am looking at an argo it's a six wheel drive like the bannana splits used to drive for anyone old enough to remember that far back. They are totally unstopable in mud and water

P.S. I got over monster trucks after pubity :D:D:D

That's a shame. I thought the changes have been postponed for a while?

Btw - nice axles.
The portal offset gives 100 mm lift, then there is additional lift from tyre diameter.

I have air springs and had intended to run standard suspension height on normal roads (my controller has 2 ride heights that can be preset and also active cornering/dive control over a set speed).

I don't believe the revised rules will be relaxed much, not enough for what I had.

I would not have any problems with stability, braking or handling - extra track width, a lot of measures to keep C of G low and reduce weight (particularly in front and behind F/R axles), hydroboost brakes, decent sway bars.

I would not be in any more danger in the event of a collision from changed height of impact protection. But the height of impact damage on the other vehicle is what I see as the big issue with VSI50 and I don't think this will be relaxed much.

When the dust settles and the new regs are known, I am hoping that I may be able to modify the chassis to raise it where the axle bump stops are.

This would overcome the lift due to the portal offset, but some thought will have to go into the suspension link mount locations for good link geometry. I may have to modify the engine sump to clear the tie rod (I have a tripple section scavenge pump, so could make it dry sump as a worst case).

I am not concerned with suspension height offroad as I can easily lift it 100 to 150 mm there, and still have good down travel (356 mm total travel at my shockies is subtantial at the wheels).

You have probably seen it, but there was a lot of discusssion on OL re the new and current regs - including some useful comments from Athol (an engineer).

They cannot make the rules retrospective - so if you get it engineered before they bring in the new rules...

If you were part-way through modifying a vehicle according to the old rules, you could apparently get an extension of the deadline, so you could get the mods assessed according to the new rules...

The NCOP has a max total lift of 150mm 50mm max for tyres. Hopefully they will see sense in NSW and change to something along these lines...

Btw - what are the axle specs??? They look like MD portals with 80 series or H260 centres???

I'm not hopeful. I have put my hybrid axles back under. If I continue my build with these, it would be easy to put the portals back under if timing allows it to be engineered in time. However if I was to continue the build with the greater freedom that the portals allowed, I would have much more work to undo if I had to take them out.

They are Nissan GU axles with Marks portals. H233, diffs with ARB lockers.

John have you actually had a chat to an engineer? even if the VSi50 had come into play people building cars where still allowed to finish there products it was just a matter of talking to an engineer and have him sign off I think on the work that is in progress to be done. I.e just to prove ti was being done before the date.

and I think it was to get lodged with the light vehicles man at the RTA so when time came to register they knew about everything before hand
