Hey guys..
just joined up and are feeling my way. ive got a 2000 p38 range rover 4ltr v8. anyone tell me a good mechanic in N.W. coast of tassie? ive been to a few but they sooks and wont touch my car. i believe ive done a manifold gasket, its a small air type sound yet i cant feel it or no singns of black soot marks. :(its performance is the same. the other option is maybe a leaking air line on suspension? again no sighn or feel, its annoying to say the least. any input and feed back would be appreciated. getting decidedly peed off and worried.

Welcome to the forum exjeeper!
Be prepared to do a LOT of reading... also spend time on Range Rovers (http://www.rangerovers.net) lots of stuff there on common problems and fixes for all models of Range Rover.

Search for the RAVE data and download it... 4000 pages of searchable in pdf format overhaul manuals etc etc.

there are a number of online LR parts suppliers in the UK from whom you can import various bits and pieces at about 1/2 the cost from a local dealer including shipping. In NW tassie I suspect you need to be as self sufficient as possible in this regard.

Look up www.blackboxsolutions.com. They sell an excellent DIY diagnostic tool for use with a laptop which will enable you to look at and diagnose all sorts of stuff. Don't bother seeing a pyschiatrist about this growing addiction which all LR nuts like us gladly suffer from ... use the $$$ instead on decent tools and spare parts :D:D:D

..... its a small air type sound ....

You'll have to describe it a bit better ... as half the car can make this noise :p

Welcome .... and many happy miles to you

Sounds like a cracked exhaust manifold, it is very common. It is made from stainless and is easily welded.

Not sure where in tazzie, but try justin cooper, he is landy mechanic.

if your willing to drive to Launceston i would recommend Austune, (can give you a phone # and address if you want), these blokes have just gained a lot of experience from my P38 ;), they also have just had a very good mechanic join them that is ex local LR dealers :D.
if it is a cracked manifold they repaired one recently on another P38.
would have to agree about Justin Cooper .... top bloke

their old 4 post hoist had my name on the side of it 'Phils Rangy'.
we just started putting in their third new 2 poster on Saturday, apparently we are going to have a Bundy naming ceremony for it 'Phils Newish Rangy Project'. :D
i walk in with a box of new bits and a gleam in my eye  'hey fellas do you reckon we could....' they hide under benches, in the dunny, the tea room, muttering no no no no go away.;):D

nah ! had an '84 Gold 4dr 2" lift 4x spotlights across the front always dirty, Coopers on silver Sunraysias, wicked exhaust note particularly at full noise.
now a '98 White P38 HSE bigger injectors Magnecor leads, opened up the exhaust, GEN III airsprings, Bilsteins, Coopers, front bar shortly to get rear bar, 2x QT diff protectors, about to do front plate protection for steering/radiator. still other stuff planned.
now you'll be able to wave .

Hey Tasi, any chance you can get some photo's of the diff protectors and then the front plate when its done? Or perhaps get your "old mate" on here! I would really love to get a front plate for my P38, but can not find any readily avail.

the diff protector practically bolted straight onto the rear diff, we took an angle grinder to the plate where it bolts to the diff slimming it down so we didn't have to disassemble the diff ...it's solid but will weld /grind to fix it when i do the 'lockers' (ARB or Tru Trac etc).
the front diff is another matter it's still a work in progress :(, shall we say it's extensively modified with the 'red axe' plasma cutter. the main problem is getting between the diff housing and the torsion bar....the bloody thing is still just touching . will fix on Monday. the front plate is the old AMV one of my old '84 Rangy, plasma cut the brackets to fit/weld onto the subframe around the radiator, should be straight forward....that's the Red Bundy plan anyway.
would really like to have gotten a Southdown plate but Atlantic British had run out and said Southdown were a bit unreliable delivery wise and couldn't get any info re left hand drive to right hand drive so far as brackets cutouts etc..
photos will be no problem when it's done, also have a trick solution for easily extending the height sensor arms. will take pics of those also.
