I have been ringing around looking for quotes and cover notes for the 101 without a lot of luck.

NRMA have not heard of a 101 but do have a 101 Campervan and a 77 Landrover V8 convertible on their books. So they cannot look at anything until next week when they confirm exactly what I have to insure.

Shannons does have a 101 on their lists and initially would only insure for $12K as that is their list value for the 101. I managed to get their agreed value up to $15K for a premium of $409 which is not too bad but they do not give cover notes. I want to compare companies and specifically look at what the offroad coverage is like. Shannons said they will not cover vehicles in 4wd parks - the consultant alluded to competitions but I need to be sure what the coverage is.

I would like to get a cover note to give me time to investigate the various policies.

So 101 owners, who are you insured with and what type of coverage do you have?

Cheers

Garry

I have NRMA third party property 2009 =2010.
Annual premium 188.94 dollars.
1977 landrover truck
Excess 500 dollars.
Policy no MOT 193 106 ???
When I was ringing around I think the NRMA and Shannons were the only ones interested.
This was a continuation of the previous owners policy as it was too hard to change companies for no gain.

Thanks Ron,

I am not totally wedded to comprehensive and will look at whether to go just 3rd party or 3rd party, fire and theft.

I will have to check with the NRMA next week.

Went through another 45mins with NRMA - only to be told the maximum they would insure any 101 for was $5000:o. Needless to say - no thanks:mad:.

I guess it is Shannons then.

Try GIO, ask for the classic and vintage car section of the vehicle insurance. If its over 30 years it should fit in their parameters

Gio are no longer doing classic insurance and referred me to Shannons. They would not insure a 101 for more than $3100 with their normal insurance.

I went with Lumleys - only slightly more expensive than Shannons but have half the excess and I keep ownership of the wreck in the case of a write off.

Shannons only give you first option to buy where Lumleys give it too you.

Just got cover with Shannon's. Agreed value, Comprehensive cover, All modifications (Big Wheels/Tyres and 3.9 engine) covered. On and off road. $500 excess. No dramas.:D Cheaper than insuring my crappy old Magna.

Tried TCIS first but "the girl who does the insurance quotes was away today:confused::eek:" - didn't inspire confidence.

I'm digging this up as I too am having difficulties finding insurance for the 101. My speeding infringements have caught up with me, despite no loss of demerit points in over two years both Shannon's and SGIO Classic will not insure me. I can insure a 6.0L V8 SS Commodore and all the insurance companies care about is no loss of license but a 2 tonne 4wd that struggles to hit 100km/h and its flat out refusal.

Most of the majors wont touch it as its over 35 years old or not in their system.

The only viable option with SGIO is third party fire and theft which I would be fine with except that the value can only be a max of $10k... I'm mainly concerned about the theft of the vehicle and coverage for accidents where I'm at fault so would be miffed if it gets stolen and I only get 10K back. Maybe I just need to invest in some anti-theft devices and sat-tracking to get the third party coverage.

I'm going to try Lumleys in the next couple of days to see what they offer.

Geez, no good mate. How long do you have to keep your nose clean before they will insure you?

Just for those that are interested I just updated my insurance with Shannon's as I've now got the 101 on club reg. Just under $284 per year with an agreed value of just under $30K. 1st option on the wreck should it be written off and a free windscreen each year. I'm going to put that one to the test shortly - see if they realise what they're up for. $500 excess.

SGIO only allow one infringement within the last two years for their classic cover, and Shannon's allow 4 in 5 years.

I got mine bundled in with a couple of bikes with Shannon's so it was covered when I shipped it from Qld and for fire and theft, think it was only an extra $30. I assume that it might be a bit more when it's on the road

Sounds like you've been a bad boy...:D.

How long will it be before you meet that criteria?

Not directly relevant, but a couple of weeks ago I was renewing insurance on both the 110 and the 2a with NRMA. A very helpful lady pointed out to me that since I had the 110 comprehensive and the 2a third party only, I should change the 2a to "Classic, Vintage and Veteran", which requires the vehicle to be thirty years old, limited mileage per year, and you need to have another car, not on this.

I followed this suggestion, it is now comprehensively insured for $7,000 for 30% less than third party only. Undoubtedly helps that I have several other policies with them and have had some for twenty years.

The RACV in VIC have a 'veteran, vintage & classic' policy, I think the vehicle has to be 15 years old.
Put my Defender on a policy with them and made a big saving over Shannons plus they allowed a higher agreed value than Shannons would.

RACV farm it out to another insurer and having multiple policies with RACV doesn't reduce the Classic policy price (but it was still cheap, cheaper if you are a member). You do get roadside cover but automatic salvage rights don't kick in until the vehicle is 25 years old.

I've never really given speeding fines without demerit points a second thought until yesterday as I've never been asked about them for insurance purposes. I'm not sure why they take a different stance on classic cars over equivalent value modern cars.

Ill be clear in March next year for Shannon's but even if I go the route of my Wife or Father insuring it now, all drivers need to be listed and meet the same criteria. It looks like I'll go third party fire and theft until then and take extra precautions around securing the 101 when its not in use.

What about insuring in your wife's name?
Does WA allow registration in joint names?

Also try suncorp.

Stu,

Have you tried going through the WA 4WD association as they have a good insurance scheme for most 4wd`s. You would have to join an affiliated club ( such as TeamW4 :) ) but might be worth a try

I will get contact details for their insurance rep if you want to give it a try.

Cheers

I know it's not completely relevant here, however I am considering switching all my insurance from NRMA to Shannons.

Currently I have: D4 = comprehensive
RRc = Third Party Fire and Theft
Perentie 110 = Classic Comprehensive (must travel less than 9,000km/year)
SIII FFR = Classic Comprehensive (must travel less than 9,000km/year)
Mk3 Inter = uninsuredWhen I tried to get insurance on the Mk3 Inter NRMA wouldn't insure a truck.

A well known Sydney enthusiast and Inter owner then suggested Shannons. He has 4 trucks including 2 prime movers a civvy ute and a Land Rover under Shannons.

So AAVA recently paid insurance for a Leyland Mastiff to take vehicles to an event. Shannons Comprehensive cost a little over $200 with no problems about a truck with a 15 tonne GVM.

Shannons have a rate for a single vehicle, A reduced rate for two vehicles and a lower again rate for the 3rd and subsequent vehicles.

I'm tempted to move everything as they will also cover your daily driver and work truck.

I would consider going to Shannons for the Classics but I would get quotes for the D4 - I have my Haflinger, 101 and Jag on the a Shannons combined policy and it is very cost effective.

However their price for insuring the RRS was one of the highest I was quoted - if the RRS was included on the combined Shannons policy any savings on the Classics were well an truely wiped out.

So shop around.
