A friend of mine (rrdude on the RRNET forum) does MTB racing and makes these fantastic LED headlights for MTB racing.
A bit pricey though.

I reckon. The images of the beam look interesting.
BTW, I'm not putting this up as a marketplace alert. This is just one of those things that one hears about.
Is anyone here silly enough to race a MTB at night? :p
Oh, DiscoSteve. :D

It's amazing whats available for bikes now, I had a set of Cateye Daylites which I brought about 10 years ago for nearly $200, with a lead acid battery. Recently I retired them and purchased a set of Ay-Up lights. They are absolutely brilliant, dunno how they compare to the radical lights, but for just over $500 I got:
- Narrow Beam Light Set
- Broad Beam Light set
- 2 X 3hr LiIon batteries
- 1 X 6hr Battery
- Dual Channel charger with Cigarette adaptor
- 2 sets of handlebar mounts
- 2 Helmet mounts
- Headband (to use as a head torch)
- And a case for it all
Value for money, and all this from a brisbane company. I can now go riding at night in complete confidence. Last week I averaged 22km/h from Ringwood East, to upper ferntree gully, due to the fact that I can see around corners (well not around corners, but you know what I mean).

I thought I was splashing out & bought my front & rear lights for around $75. They are the ones that came out on top of the Bicycle Victoria test though so they are not too bad for the $$.
I try not to ride at night though - it's just getting dark on the last stage of my ride home though but the days are getting longer now :).

Or you're getting faster.

Or you're getting faster.Don't know about that, although it's only 10-15 min longer by bike for the trip home.
I do a time check at Canley Vale stn (I can see the clock there) & some days when I think I'm doing well, I end up being disappointed :(. Other days, like when there's a headwind, I get surprised by my time :).
Of course, it could just be the CityRail clock that's inaccurate :D.

Not if it's the digital, it's fed from Telstra's atomic master I believe.

pricey yeah, but lycra-lunatic will pay the price. After all who else would pay to wear getup that advertises branding all over themselves for free.
Have you guys checked out the price of "push bikes " these days, they ain't no Malvern Stars anymore.
Each to his own I suppose;)

While they look nice, you can make your own for a fraction of the cost.
$20-35 for an MR16 12V LED bulb (e.g. this one http://www.ledshoponline.com/mr16_t-type_cree_bike_light.htm )
$<2 for a connector from Jaycar.
$50 or less for a 12V battery - I use a 7.5Ah SLA - heavy but last forever.
$<5 for housing, cables and heatshrink.
