G'day lifted the defender about a month ago and seem to be getting bad vibrations throught the floor that seem to be getting worse . Is something going to fail ? Looked at few other posts on this but seem abit confused . Whats the fix of this ?
How much to fix ?
Where to get fixed in Melb ?
Is it safe to drive ?
Thanks .

How much was it lifted?

Anything over 50 mm or thereabouts is going to change the driveline geometry which will require other modifications.

if you've lifted it over 50mm (2") or so, as said your prop shafts will be working at larger angles which can cause vibration;)

And also the unis run at a different angle after the lift so they could be on the way out:cool:

You might need to go with a DC joint in the front propshaft. Others have had to go that way with these lifts on the late Defenders (although you have a Td5).

Check to make sure the front prop shaft is out of phase as it should be.
I would also give it a good grease while your at it.

I wouldn't suspect your prop shaft phase is out unless it has been taken off the vehicle and pulled apart, the only way it can be out off phase is by physicaly pulling it apart and putting it back together incorrectly.
You can get vibes from worn uni's or slip joints in the prop shafts, or excessive drive angle's.
How to rectify: front, double cardon prop shaft or 3 degree correcting radius arms.
rear, the rear is not as bad and I have had no problems but would like to improve the drive angle, this would be achieved by an adjustable A frame braket this would allow the top of the diff to be moved back to correct the angle.

2 inches is 50.8mm

Pommy have you got a tape measure? can you measure between the centre of the wheel and the edge of the plastic arch. That will give us an idea as to the lift

I have a vibration I suspect is coming from the front prop shaft. Vibration started 6mths + after fitting new (standard +35mm springs). I am about the same height as yours. The top of the guard is about 1180 from the ground with 235/85 tyres. The bottom of the chassis rail (not bump rubber) is about 220 mm from the top of the top of the front axle tube (not flat bump stop).
Looking at a double cardan joint or new springs.

not to hijack this thread i went to perth 4x4 with a view to seeing what was on offer aftermarket against say bilsteins for the 130, matey said he had tough dog or ome shocks and springs (rear springs only singles in this instant unlike the originals) he said the shock spring combo would lift the truck 1.5 inches, and not enough to bother altering the rear trailing arms and the radius arms ....i am fairly happy with the clearance i get at the moment but was planning to change the props for some bailey morris ones as they are engineered beautifully Bailey Morris UK - Propshaft Manufacturers (http://www.baileymorris.co.uk/) (poss a bit overkill but better that than under) what is your collective take on the advice from perth 4x4 ?
I always thought any raising above 1.5 -2 inch required some correction to save your parts wearing regartds andy

It might be the angle of the front diff is too extreme. You can get offset bushes to bring the diff pinion up to make it nearer to original.

off set bushes help with steering. However, off set bushes exacerbate the problem at the transfer box end.

Mines 560mm and I haven't had any issues with Vibration.

510 I believe is standard.
