You use IMG2OZF to compress/convert maps for use in OZI CE, its available of the OZI website for free, when converting you need to remove some of the map colours as this will help to reduce the file size, Vic comes out to about 734mb , NSW to 1.03 gig and TAS to 1.48 gig.

tweak the settings in the converter mentioned and you can get it down a lot lower.

I get all of australia in under 2 GB.

But the colour depth and resolution isnt quite as good. To make my naving easier I do all the main setup on the high quality maps on the laptop and then load them onto the pda/gps

no.

to use topo on a tom tom you have to hack the tom tom to get to the core OS then install ozi on it to read the maps (there are other softwares that work as well but ozi is what I use so I mentioned that)

Tar Dave, how hard is it to do that, I use ozi on the lap top but it would be good to be able to get rid of the lappy and table as its right in the passanger impact zone.

It depends on what the OS of the Tom Tom is. If its Win CE then worth doing as you need a common OS to run the other software on. Having said that, there are some units out there, (can't think of the brand right now), that nobody has yet cracked.

If you are keen simply google cracking, or hacking your particular GPS model, and I would presume you will find links for software and instructions to do the job.

The upshot is that your GPS will load to windows rather than starting the proprietry nav software.

from memory the new tom toms use some thing other than the winCE core runtime so wont run ozice but will run the linux equivelent of oziece

I know how to crack the winCE core versions and it takes me 10 minutes for the easy ones and about 2 hours for the ones that want to fight it out. (thats to ready to go in either their native or hacked versions)

5 minutes of google hasnt resolved which OS you have in your unit some places say tom tom is linuxish and others win ce.

Heres how to check

grab the unit, the manuals and the cdrom that came with it. on one of them will be a sticker or printed label as part of the item (back page of the propers users manual for the mio moovs as an example) that will have written

Win CE NET X.X Core

where X.X is the version number of the OS you need this to be 3.0 or better.

IF you have that I can help you turn the navigation world into your oyster.

The unit i have is from the states its a globusgps and its got tomtom, igo8 and oziCE running without any prob's bloody good unit. on oziCE if you plot your way points can it take you to them???

if you already have ozice running all you need to do is run the converter to convert your maps, drop them (the maps generated by the converter) into the gps and youre laughing.

yes if you set up waypoints you can select a way point and it will give you an as the crow flies arrow to the waypoint.

If you take the time to setup a route it will navigate you from point to point along the route.

what it wont do is navigate you over defined roads if you just pick a waypoint and ask it to get you there.

I dont know if this is any help, but here are a few apps that are availiable as a free download for tom tom units i find the offroad one ok and the trip meter useful Le Web Bazar !!! Offroad Navigator !!! (http://www.webazar.org/tomtom/offroad.php?lang=uk) Just dont get the french versions like i did the first time, then it gets confusing

If its one of the stand alone TT units you cant run any other maps or programs on it, as Dave said it it uses Win CE as its core os then it can be hacked. This includes all those cheap ebay units, PDA's, Ipaqs etc. If you want to run Ozi get a cheap ebay unit or even better a HP pda of some sort, then you can run Ozi/ TT / Visual GPS/ GPS dash and any other street nav program thats been hacked.
