Broken MAF - Query

Howdy Doody,

Smart me managed to break my MAF Sensor this arvo whilst giving it a clean...broke one of the very fine elements inside. :(

Query is what is the urgency to replace the MAF as they aren't cheap? What change to the vehicle should I notice? Fuel economy I'm not to worried about but if the Disco hesitates or limps etc that will really annoy SWMBO.

I have an EGR kit installed and I understand that MAF sends a signal to the EGR Value (when fitted). Does this mean it's a mute point or does a signal still go to the computer thus logging an error code and stuffing something else up?

I would drive it with the electrical connector unplugged until a replacement is obtained. It wont rev as well but will still be quite driveable. I drove my '99 for a couple of years with the MAF unplugged because unplugging it overcame bad hesitation. Eventually I bought a new MAF when I discovered the fault lay with the MAF.

IIRC, running a a TD5 without the MAF is not a good idea.
In a V8, yes it will run, but it runs on the richest setting which drains a full tank inside 200k's.

In a TD5, i wouldnt think it would start at all, but as a diesel is throttled by fuel feed, hmmmmmmm, maybe not a good idea.....

What were you doing poking around in there anyway??? You only need MAF or CO2 cleaner sprayed in there..... :eek:

Yeah well none of the above mentioned products and was cleaning all the crud from the grate and clinging to the walls...just got a bit careless with the cloth.

The element was fine till...:mad:

Hi Peter,

I did the same thing recently with my MAF, breaking one of the filaments while trying very gently to give it a clean. My TD5 ran no problems at all with it disconnected. I sourced a second hand unit and replaced the broken one and it ran like that for months until a mechanic ran a test which showed that the replacement unit was faulty and wasn't working anyway. My understanding is that that the TD5 will run on default settings if the MAF is not working although those default settings will be less than optimal so expect a hit in performance and fuel economy.
