urgent help please!!

hello. i am hoping someone here can help me out as i am in a bit of a pickle.

today whilst tightening up a wheel nut on my 2a, i stripped the thread in the hub.

it looks like in the past this must have been damaged some how with the previous owner, ( i only just got the car last week).

can any one tell me if it is possible to replace this stud with a press in item. i went all over the place looking for a stud to suit but found nothing.

can any one give me some details of what part number i need. surely a car out there must have a stud to suit. i would like to keed to correct sizes too. thanks in advance. marcello

One of my hubs has the same problem, which I haven't resolved yet. If you do find a fix off-list, please do report back.
I think a previous owner tried to weld a stud in but not very well :(

Yes, press in studs exist, although you will probably have to drill out the thread, and really ought to fit them to all five for balance. I suggest give Fred Smith a call, he may have them or know who has. Another place to try is four wheel drives in Box Hill. Before doing that though, see how good the thread in the hub is - you may be able to simply replace the stud with a screw-in one. There are many Series 1 & 2/2a Landrovers driving round with one or more studs welded in, although this is almost certainly illegal, i have never heard of it causing any problems except when a stud needs to be replaced.

It may be easier and cheaper to get a good second hand hub, again from the same sources, or someone here may have one.

Note that in very late 2a production (and S3), studs were changed from 9/16" BSF to 16mm, and you will probably find it more convenient to have all four wheels the same!

As JD says, in the interim you should be able to drive on 4 studs.

The annoying screw in studs are the reason I changed all my hubs over to SIII type. Of course that means redrilling the holes in the brake drums.

If you or a mate are handy with a welder, you can whack the old stud (or a new one back in and weld it in place, but make sure you preheat the hub well and use the correct rods or a mig.

Press in studs for the S2a, 9/16BSF are P/N 561886 (screw in 561590), and do not require the drums to be drilled. The metric studs P/N 576825 were fitted from Suffix H and continued in S3. Note that late S3, while the studs stayed the same, the hub itself and the stub axle changed.

If you have the screw in studs, it is a good idea to keep the wheel stud and nut threads clean and lubricated to avoid this sort of problem - of course, a good idea with any vehicle!
