My Volvo Grader is ill.
She has been loosing coolant for some time.
They replaced the radiator cap,SAME.
Just had a service done, crack in header tank, replaced,SAME.
The return feed from the head to the header tank is flowing aerated coolant.
The header tank fills to completely full whilst running then drains back to below the low level on shut down, coolant returns on startup:eek::eek::eek::eek:.
I think we have an exhaust gas in the coolant issue:mad::mad::mad::mad:
No complaints about the dealer,CJD.They are great to deal with, still under warranty,2700hrs done. They are sending a mechanic back down in the morning to investigate.
WE HAVE LOTS OF ISSUES WITH OTHER EQUIPMENT SUPPLIERS DOING ANY WORK,NEXT WEEK OR THE WEEK AFTER IF POSSIBLE!!!

If it is not overheating, there could be a leak on the inlet side of the water pump, sucking air into the system.
The air then gets hot & expands, makes lots of bubbles and blows coolant out the top tank.... Just a thought.

i'd say its not that considering the coolant returns to the header tank as if by magic when you start it up in the morning.....

andy, any idea what boost pressure the graders motor runs?
i'm guessing there may be a small issue with porosity in a cylinder head, boost pressure forces a certain amount of coolant outbefore pressure possibly equalises between inlet charge pressure and coolant pressure, header tank fills up, then before the engine cools down when the engine is shut down and theres no boost, the air pocket in the water jacket slowly leaks back into the inlet tract, with either the pressure dropping off so the coolant isnt forced into the inlet tract, or not all the air is forced back out......
just a random thought tho.....

Hi Guys
She is off to the big smoke in the morning.
The amount of air bubbles being fed back into the expansion tank and the sudden drop of coolant on shut down are the biggest clues.
We did many "sniffer"tests wich it passed, pressure test,it did fall but over a prolonged period.
The techie got back to the office.Get it hot and re-test the CO2 Sniffer. If it still passes try and get it hotter.
Being a euro4 motor the CO emmisions are very low and hard to detect.
Next hot test still ok.Did a 30min drive with big hills, definate colour change, confirmation of our thoughts:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:
Thanks to extended warranties she is still covered:cool::cool::cool::cool:
Once again, cant speak harsh words against CJD,got to be the best heavy machinery service suppliers in the state. We get them to service our CAT:cool::cool::cool:
Im going up with the Grader tommorow,Boss is away, see if I can trick them into lending us another grader as a replacement;);););) We are buying a new grader next year!!!!

Andy, Similar issues with detecting head leaks in Tdi and Td5's. The sniffer test won't usually work until engine is under load/ boost.
Sound like a good, customer focused company!:D

Maybe the straw hat with the flowered head band, the CWA uniform floral frock and large handbag.
Bloody Volvo drivers.

Unusual for Ovlov, hope you don't end up with an old, prehydralic model; they're a fair cow to do final trim with.;)

Hoping for a bigger new demo one;););).
Told them that we are replacing the Cat grader next year and I have pretty well talked management into upsizing to a 14ft machine.

Hi Guys
Went up to Perth today,CJD have supplied us with a trade-in grader whilst mine is fixed. Its getting a new complete motor under warranty, none in Australia at the moment:mad::mad::mad:.
Good thing about the loan machine,it is an older model than mine, but it has the bigger 14ft blade and bigger wheels, same horsepower.Having the use of one should help me convince management that the bigger machine should improve productivity.I believe I can save 1 cut in each direction maintenece grading, construction is a different story, will be able to shift plenty more dirt in one cut, plus the horespower and bigger tyres to help.
The maintenece grader is up for replacement next year,I get the newie, mine goes to be the maintence grader.

I rekon I convinced the boss today to get a bigger grader.
Doing winter grading with the bigger mullboard,I can now do the first cut across in 2 less cuts and 1 less on the cut back across.
So,in 1Km on an average width road,I normally do 1 drain cut, then a cut up onto the road then 1 more to get the dirt past the centre, then the other drain cut,1 cut up onto the road,1 past the centre then 2 to cut off into the drain.1km of road is 8km of grading, today with only 2 feet more blade,1km done with 5km of grading, cant belive nobody has done the sums before!!!! Over the life of the machine this would save plenty over the extra purchase price alone, never mind the bonous of the bigger machine when doing construction.
The grader they have leant us is a 2001 Volvo 720VHP,with 8000hrs on the clock.Hasnt got the horsepower of mine(127kw VS 145kw),but it still can push(actually PULL before somebody picks me up:p:p:p) a full blade with ease.Difference being the bigger tyres giving better traction, plus I dont use the full power on my grader doing maintence(leave the economy switch on) as it isnt required.

Hi Ian
Not bought another one yet,the CAT 12H goes next year,I get the new grader, mine goes to maintence.
We get exceptional service backup from CJD for my grader and our 20tonne excavator.Makes sense to change all the fleet over to Volvo,I can tell you we will never have another JCB.Our loader has been a pig from day 1,its just started loosing water AGAIN,2 head gaskets,2 turbos and a motor rebuild and its only done 2500 hrs.The supplier wont even return calls, took them 3 months to rebuild the motor last time.
This old volvo goes well, hydraulics are painfully slow compared to mine and vision isnt quite as good.MISSING MY HORSEPOWER and TRANSMISSION.
