Hi all,
I recently purchased a set of the plastic factory type flares just to give the car a bit of a fresh look.
Problem im having/had is after cleaning all of the old double sided tape off them, and putting new stuff on, one fell off when my wife was going to work the other day.
LUCKILY she found it on the side of the road last night and not to banged up, but now I dont trust the others from falling off.
I spent a day cleaning them and used external auto double sided tape when i fitted them so am sort of at a bit of a loss as what to do now.
I just know im gonna have to take them all off again....
:(

You need to use Sikaflex and also you need to clamp them on until the Sikaflex cures, about 12hrs.
I had the same problem, they are a pain to attach and you'll find clamping them a pain too, but it's worth it as they do enhance the look of the car.

Thanks mate,
Is Sikaflex just a type of glue, and do I do away with the tape all together?
They do make the car look 100% better I must say..

sikaflex makes a heap of products and the polyurethane adhesives are awesome. Just dont get it on your hands or smear it where you don't want it:o

I have had my flares sitting in their box in the garage for almost 16 months now. I was strongly advised by a LR Dealership to not try fitting in less than a warm summers day. Understanding they would have to fit them at all times but unless you do things properly, it is quite difficult. Supposed to park the car in the sun also to warm up the metal.
So I'll be waiting till November-ish I think and will try then.

I agree with the waiting till summer tip. Also let the flares sit in the sun for an hour or so. This way they are more flexible when fitting to the car. Test fit first and have a practice run without taking the backing tape off. This way you can get a feel for the way you need to hold it to fit. Then, clean the car with a good alcohol based cleaner like

and apply immediately. Fix into position with some of those ratchet style blue plastic clamps from bunnings and let sit do not drive for 12hrs min, don't wash for a week after and you should be good to go. My other tip is to apply in the afternoon so the cooling effect of night can harden the adhesive strips on the flares.
Good luck

Hi guys,
I need to put flares on the rangie but don't want to stuff up the panel or paint work in case I want to restore it down the track. Is Sixaflex reasonable to remove with a heat gun or Prepsol, etc?
Or where would you get double sided tape from?
Cheers

Hey Stu,
Still havnt got around to re fixing mine as yet, so cant comment on the Sikaflex, however if you want to go the double sided tape option, I just got mine from Autobarn, and used the automobile weather proof one that they had.
4 of the 6 I used it on have stayed on but not really happy with the result. Maybe if I had followed some of the previous post ideas, I would probably have had a better result.
Might take them to my friend who has a motor trimmers buisness and get him to re do them all properly..;)

I just bought a set second hand from TRS & am finding it impossible to clean off the old adhesive residue from the original double sided tape.
I have tried, Prepsol, acetone, spraying thinners, general purpose thinnners, gun cleaning thinners, metho, turps.
Any ideas?

I used eucalyptus oil and a scraper (sharpened screwdriver), then acetone to clean it up, absolute PITA job to do.

I will give it go, it is the first adhesive that I haven't been able to find a real solvent for.
